Hunchback of Notre Dame is the only Disney live-action announcement that actually has me curious simply because I always thought the original film had a lot of wasted potential.
Is there any feasible hope at all that modern Disney has the balls to go anywhere more mature with it?
hunchback adaptations will always be a weird case because victor hugo wanted it to be continuously adapted to fit different mediums (plays, musicals, silent movies, etc) due to his original desire for writing the book, being to bring attention to the cathedral itself and his lament about the book killing the edifice.
Liam Smith
Probably not. Disney's wokeness is only skin deep. Themes of religious, sexual, and racial violence are too status-quo questioning to be pushed further than the film presents it. I guess at most they'll up-play the handicap aspect as some kind of ableism thing.
Adam Rivera
This will be the fifth or sixth version of the novel and NOT ONE had had the balls to adapt it properly. Why would you expect Disney to do it?
Isaac Brown
They could simply do a shot-for-shot remake that removed the gargoyles and it would have the chance to be an improvement.
Gabriel Rodriguez
Hugo’s ambition for spreading Hunchback as much as possible is why every “it’s not dark enough” or “it’s not faithful” criticism shows that the critic was too shallow in their reading. Hugo himself is the reason why Hunchback 1996 and Hunchback Broadway is like that, mainly because both are largely based off of La Esmeralda, a play he wrote the deviates from his own source material a ton.
Xavier Gray
Hell they could just edit the original film to remove the gargoyles and I'd buy it.
Michael Harris
after that fire in the church i think disney will wait the dust go. so no movie for the next few years
Juan White
Pretty sure that I watched that edit online.
David Collins
Charles Laughton's and Lon Chaney's versions were pretty good
Robert Lopez
It will be shit like every Disney Live-Action movie. Screencap this post.
Nolan Ross
The Anthony Quinn version had Esmeralda dying.
Caleb Harris
>Is there any feasible hope at all that modern Disney has the balls to go anywhere more mature with it?
If it's based on the broadway version, then yes.
Anthony Johnson
Hunchback was practically live action as it is... they didn't really push the action or designs as cartoonish as other films. except for the gargoyles, I suppose.
Kayden Flores
All they have to do is get rid of the singing gargoyles.
Blake Cruz
>tfw Tony Jay could have easily played him in a Live action
Calling it now. No Hellfire allowed in live action film.
Jaxson Perez
No way it's going to be good. They will downplay the racism and everything else because if they made it an important part of the story woke retards would be bitching about the movie glorifying racism or something stupid and its insensitive to gypsies.
I dont see this movie going well at all. Unless disney stops caring about woke twitter saying things.
Matthew Fisher
Based Hugo
Blake Hernandez
They could get Patrick Stewart. He'd be a good Frollo
Jaxson Davis
I am 100% certain they will change the ending so that Frollo gets his final comuppance from Esmarelda and/or the rest of the gypsies.
Eli Long
Will they hire an actual hunchback actor? There should be a huge backlash if they don't.
They need to make it an adaptation of the La Jolla musical. It's fucking awesome
Kayden Wood
>that look of utter disgust on Frollo's face
Yeah, that's gonna be me when the live action movie comes out.
Justin Torres
>Hellfire gets butchered like Be Prepared >Bells of Notre Dame gets completely cut >Quasi will be a completely cg character with a bad singer voicing him, leading to the new version or Out There being auto tuned trash But at least there'd be no gargoyles.
Henry Young
>gargoyles are replaced by Jason Alexander actually showing up in the film as Archdeacon George Costanza
Adrian Rodriguez
It's hard for me to picture Disney ever going through with the tragic ending for anything.
Kevin Robinson
Maybe they will do something with Mulan.
Not looking forward to it though, they could have made a perfect CGI Mushu after the Jungle Book and Lion King and still make it a Wuxia(n?) tale with some chinese sword fights and war scenes, along with beautiful ancient China scenery.....
Oh god can't wait for the disappointment
Btw, The Jungle Book and tthe Beauty and the Beast are well regarded. Never watched them, are they worth it?
Christopher Edwards
>The Jungle Book and the Beauty and the Beast are well regarded are they worth it? The original animated versions? I think Beauty and the Beast is a real classic and worth a watch if you enjoyed old Disney at all. I don't have much opinion on the Jungle Book beyond Shere Khan being a fun villain.
I don't think the live-action take on either is worth bothering with.
Ethan Barnes
>Wasted potential What do you mean by that? It's perfect
Adam Smith
I think the biggest gripes are the tonal inconsistencies, some of the back-and-forths on whether the Romanians are supposed to be depicted positively or negatively, and the obligatory Disney happy ending.
Though I suppose it is worth commending that Quasimodo didn't end up with a shoehorned perfect romance in the end and took solace in his friendship and chance at new social acceptance.
Brody Edwards
Is Hunchback even a thing kids like these days? I never see it mentioned with other Disney films.
David Bailey
It's not going to be in any Disney Princess marketing line-ups no.
