Seriously, wtf is going on between Adora and Catra. Mainly, the latter. It's maddeningly confusing. What is she trying to accomplish in this show? One minute she's friends with Adora. The next she's trying to kill her. Then she's KINDA trying. Then she seems to be just trying to prove she's better. When she's not doing this she's shitting on Shadow Weaver. Then she's crying cause she never gave her enough attention or whatever.

I want to quit the show, but I can't tell if this is all leading to something or it's just shitting writing.

It's because in the He-Man comic he was just some evil dude and overshadowed and bested by Skeletor who got the character development instead. In the Mike Young cartoon he was an ancient wizard that was trapped in a portal and in the DC Comics he's like an ancient Kirby-esque godlike being (which was kind of interesting and then they didn't do much with it) and that stuff usually doesn't allow for that softening up kind of stuff.

Admittedly I've always liked the "Hordak's daughter" idea that the toys introduced and I legit would like a story with Hordak legit caring for Adora as his kid, it would be an interesting angle to explore at some future point in another reboot.

For now I'm also enjoying Entraptadak, that was such an unexpected surprise. I honestly didn't see it coming.

Ok I just finished S3. By far the best season of the show to date. Excellent character writing and drama. I especially loved how the relationship between Hordak and Entrapta developed.

That scene broke my heart. I love how much depth they gave Hordak. Him and Catra are incredibly similar. Both feel deep insecurity and a desire to prove that they're better than others think they are. I'm honestly impressed with how well written the villains for this show are.

That's sort of the point. Adora realized during her fight with her that she can't keep feeling bad for Catra. She keeps making these decisions herself and hurts everyone around her. The only way for her to truly redeem herself is realize on her own that she needs to change which I think is a really good message.

Shadow Weaver is positioning herself as a teacher to glimmer with easy access to the other princesses, and glimmer just lost her mother and is going to be put in a position of having to make decisions for Brightmoon. Hard to say how Castaspella is going to take all this, since she despises shadow weaver, and may think she should take over brightmoon instead of glimmer.

For about two seconds at the end there, I was wondering “Wait, why is she in this scene, of all people?” And then I realized “Oh yeah, because she’s one of the few expendable characters.” Her sacrifice felt like it was rushed and didn’t have a lot of weight, even if it was gently foreshadowed. I think maybe it’s because she’s not personally close to Adora.

I really wish they’d’ve built up some scenes with the flying horse this season and then killed him off instead. I’ve said it before: I really want the horse to die and get removed from the show, and it’s the only way I can think of to redeem him existing. He’s just a shitty pointless character who isn’t entertaining to watch.

Also it’s kinda disappointing that I’m already certain we’ll see Queen Angella again and she’ll come back at some point. They wouldn’t tease that little bit about King Micah still being alive if they weren’t eventually going to be reunited. I’m kinda disappointed that this means the dead characters in this show so far aren’t actually going to stay dead and their sacrifices get diminished in that way.

I know it’s autistic of me, but I was a little let down when Catra came to and then touched her face as though checking if it were still janked up, only she was touching the wrong side. I probably wouldn’t have noticed if she didn’t have heterochromia normally.

Also my other nitpick would be that scene in Mara’s ship where Adora says “there must be a door! this ship is so massive and this room is so tiny!” When the background made it appear they were in a large cavernous hall, and the establishing shot of the ship before that really didn’t make it look so big. Sometimes I think this show could use better art direction. I get the same annoyance whenever the script verbally reminds me SheRa is supposed to be giant, because honestly she never looks like she is all that big, unless she is standing still side by side to another character.

Hordak and Catra are exactly the same, both of them trying to prove themselves worthy in the eyes of their "Parental" figure, and failing at that.

Hordak already lost everything and was deep in the muck of decisions/actions that resulted in him having no one. He essentially hit rock bottom decades ago and had nothing for himself and was still stuck in the rut of being a failure. But for Hordak, he found Entrapta and she told him plainly that there's nothing wrong with having imperfections and you're beautiful as you are. And Hordak believed that and he started pulling himself out of the black hole he found himself in, thanks to Entrapta's helping hand and the willingness to accept help from someone.

Hordak finally cared about someone, seen himself as being worthy of that and was starting to let go of his past and look to a future.

Catra, on the other hand, literally stopped caring about herself and others and wallowed in her self pity and she tore away her connections to the people that did love her. She became selfish and only thought of herself and put her wants over others and manipulated the ones that loved her to the point of being an unrecognizable monster covered in darkness.

Hordak was finally crawling out of his issues and Catra was falling in hers. But now, thanks to her actions, she's dragging Hordak back in, thanks to her removing the one element that finally make him feel worthy.

Catra, however, was the one who turned it from being about proving herself to just destroying everything out of spite. She continuously makes decisions that brought her to Hordak's level and then she goes even lower.

actually, now that you've brought it up I can see it actually being more of a problem with digital stuff. When you're using paper and pencil you tend to move head and such around more and look at it from different angles, while that can be more difficult using a monitor.
I guess that would be less of an issue if they have the draw on the desk monitor stuff, which they should, but I would still say generally speaking it's probably harder to do digitally.

I mean while I can't say I saw "Catra ruins everything and is the one who ends up manipulating Hordak solely because she's super fucking pissed her abusive mom doesn't love her" coming but endgame being everyone teaming up to deal with the faceless enemy that is Horde Prime seems obvious. Season 2 was split into two mini seasons of 6 episodes each because Netflix is weird. Compare it to 12 Forever that got an entire TWENTY FIVE episode season (series if we never get a new one) dropped all at once. If we assume each show had a somewhat comparable production timeline then seasons 2 and 3 might have been shit already more or less ready to go at the time of season 1 being released.

I think whoever wrote that article just screwed up. The context implies they meant 52 but wrote 42 by mistake. There's nothing about 42 being the agreed number, or subtracting from the planned four seasons of 13 episodes.

Actually season 2 and 3 were written together as one season. Netflix is releasing them in smaller chunks because of the algorithm. They've done this with a few other shows too.

If you read the Animation Magazine article that is quoted in this piece, Noelle herself is quoted as saying they have already finished four arcs of 13 episodes back in November of last year. We are guaranteed 52 episodes, and it just depends how fast Netflix wants to dole them out.

Being that age myself and relating to her as much as I do, I can easily see where the designer was coming from. But it’s still really jarring seeing her right beside the teenage characters and not seeming older than them at all, in any conceivable way.
