Genjutsu works by affecting chakra in the brain. Avatar characters don't have that Naruto-specific chakra, so genjutsu won't work on them at all.
Only with AS Aang doing most of the work and even then they have to be tricky.

I don't think people fully grasp how busted Madara is even by Naruto standards. It would make no difference if he's older or younger, regular or qvatar state, Aang couldn't defeat madara ever unless he got a surprise attack while going all out, which is not the case here. Madara has top level of base ninja abilities including super high speed, strength, agility and endurance, then he has jutsu itself like subatitution and so on, then he has all the broken ass sharingan powers and THEN he also has all the fucking rinnegan powers too. If Aang tries to block Madara's chakra via spirit bending he has to get close which is almost guaranteed insta death, his only hope is bloodbending and hoping it's enough to finish off Madara and that he can't break out to counter. How tf would Aang even counter something like perfect Susanoo?

You have some abilities that are fairly broken in it but most of them are contained by restrictions of one kind or another and characters tank or counter them all the fucking time. I think Susanoos are made of energy, not sure a spirit could phase through that. Plus one of the abilities of the rinnegan allows people to remove other's souls so it's possible he could just kick a spirit right off. Sealing jutsus are also a thing and are perfect for countering spirits and the likes.
