It's also important to keep in mind that Kirby ain't high literature, Fourth World/New Gods were significant for being a brand new, incredibly inventive comic concept at a time where there really hadn't been any for almost a decade prior when Kirby himself created stuff like the Asgardians and Galactus. So look at it in the same way you'd look at the original FF and Thor comics, whatever that means to you.

Kirby had this weird thing where he was using Fantastic Four and Thor to explore all these cool ideas but he couldn't do Fourth World at Marvel because it would've required him to kill off Thor and all the supporting cast (issue 1 of New Gods references the destruction of the Rainbow Bridge, kind of) so he did that stuff over at DC. Because none of the 4th World books sold enough they got cancelled and Kirby went over to Marvel to do the Eternals, which were originally intended to be completely separate from the rest of the Marvel universe.
It's a weird journey for those ideas.
