Originally Reed was just very stern and determined, over time they just made him an autistic for whatever reason. Also marriage were more like a business than whatever the hell we have going on now, each person knew their role in the family.

Reed Richards was never a fighter, and especially was never a power house. Reeds main style is just subduing his enemies, usually by enveloping them, this is something that could never work on Spider Man, who at around adult age is stronger than the Thing(not a mention a whole lot smarter). Usually Reed would just bide time and find a way to coordinate his team, or use some sort of invention to take Spider man down. That being said, if Reed was a more aggressive fighter by nature, then maybe.

Namor and Thing almost always stomp him, hell fighting Namor usually devolves into a waiting game of getting him dehydrated long enough to stop him.
