Fuck you, indeed. I hope history will remember that creative decision as having been a mistake that made the show worse. Them suddenly being friends and getting relegated to being side characters whose sole purpose was comic relief just felt really awkward and like it came out of nowhere.
The writers shouldn't have spent so much time on them being redeemed and joining the CG's if they weren't going to be involved in the main plot in any meaningful capacity.
