Kion is boring and would have been way more interesting if the whole series was a conflict of whether he was going to become evil like Scar or not and used his roar in questionable ways in the service of the greater good. The show sorta eluded to this in the first episode before it became for preschoolers. You can see his interactions with Kiara are animated to have similar facial expressions to scar. Bringing back Scar but having him advise Janja was stupid. A smarter show would have had Scar council Kion playing the devil to the way Mufasa's the angel. However, since the show is aimed as preschoolers you can't do that. It should have been aimed at the 8-12 crowd like gravity falls.
it makes sense when you think about it. Its an archetypal scar, its the symbol of that little darkness that so many heroes have in them. Harry Potter was scarred by Voldemort and has some of Voldemort in him. Naruto has the Fox whiskers . Luke Skywalker lost his hand to Vader. Hiccup lost his leg from the queen dragon. Frodo has nine fingers. They all have been touched by darkness and now have a little darkness inside of them making them stronger. That's why the show is so popular. It connects on a collective unconscious level with children. Its a religious experience for them.
