I was watching this interview the other day with Fred Savage where he was saying that he was realizing all these old movies he used to love like Splash and Big were "problematic" when he tried to show them to his kids, so he just lets them watch Rick and Morty instead, and I was thinking, okay, if you find those movies sketchy to show to your kids wouldn't Rick and Morty be just as bad since it's all gorey and has all sorts of fucked up stuff? well well WELL look at us peers fighting amongst like crabs in a bucket. I wonder, while this side huffs and that side puffs, who laughs at us all while we aren’t focusing any of this justified anger at them. My problem is that the show changed with how it presents itself/story.

My gripes are this:

1: Morty has changed too much in a bad way. He's become a pessimist and filled to the brim with anger/violence issues, hes basically rick 2.0.If this was the end of the show then i'd understand that moire, but they got 70 moire episodes left and thats the problem. When we are introduced to the character, despite the shit he puts up with rick he still has a heart of gold and doesn't fight unless hes pushed into a corner and has to save the day. He was always balancing out ricks BS and keeping it level headed, but with him now being rich 2.0 there just is no balance. It's full asshole.

2: violence. Sure there were gorey bits in s1/'s2, but there were plenty of episodes with just humor and no one dying. In s3 it changed to EVERY episdodes focus being a blood bath action filled event. It's everywhere with no exception, so the show goes from being based around comedy/situation to blood/action/mindlessness.

If the dog episode happened in s3, then instead of rick saying to hide in the sewers or coming up with a clever way to solve the issue, he instead go in guns blazing. Which leads into

3: Rick. He went from being drunk/aloof, to literally having an iron man suit built into his skeleton and a boring gary stu. Sure he was powerful before, but there were plenty of times where he ran/was not in control of the situation (and had to even go through inderdimensional customs/run from the bugs).

In s3, outside of the iron man suit in his skeleton, he just solves every situation with brute force. It's fun for a segment or two, but when its every situation its just boring,

His entire character was that he was on the run from the gov with his buddies who tried to take it on and lost, but in S3 he takes on the ENTIRE government by himself, and defeates it and citadel without breaking a sweat ggez he was 500 steps ahead of everyone all part of his plan. It just feels like a cop out.

4: Continuity. The whole divorce plot was always an annoying part of the show, and it was made even worse in s3 when it was made front and center... and resolved by.. not being resolved whatsoever. The writers at the end basically said "well this was a bad idea, lets pretend it didnt happen lol". Great, thanks. Why even bring it up to begin with then?

Due to this, every episode had to be watched one after the other cause story all of a sudden became prime and center.

The show worked far batter as self containted mini adventures that are fun twists on scifi tropes (and not DIRECT rip offs like the madmax episode and marvel, like thats not a twist but the exact setting).

Bassicly the writing room needs to go back to what it was like in s1 and use that style of wriitng/characters, instead of mortyrick 2.0 and continuity drama with ironman rick.

de-thumb the members of the fandom and the anti-fandom who think Rick is supposed to be a roll modal character rather than a self-destructive train wreak who lies to himself.

That's nothing compared to what he does in later seasons. I think that episode was about the power level he needed, has access to a lot of cool tech but has to think on his feet instead of always being overprepared.

Not even close. It’s god damn Dans fault. He’s got a huge ego and whenever he gets his grubby little hands on something, he fucks it all up.

The divorce arc was all Dan. The dude got his ass dumped in real life and used R&M as an outlet for it; and who could tell him no? Jerry became his personal punching bag/self insert for Dan and there was nothing anyone could do about it. All of the shitty character growth this season, like at the end of Pickle Rick or Beth’s play world, that shit was ALLLLLL Dan. And this don’t to say that his ideas or wants are terrible.

The intergalactic marriage counseling episode was Dans idea, based off his divorce again, but other writers could play off of it. They were given creative control, and so the episode was funny and memorable. But when Dan barges in and steals creative control, you get season 3.

Now, why does everyone complain about the female writers? Because Dan put them in the firing line. He hired them because “MUH DIVERISTY” so people shot them down after the season was shit. The real reason they sucked is because they had all worked with Dans egomaniacal ass before so they bent to his will in the writers room more than anyone else’s. Is it there fault? Kind of. Is it Dans? One hundred and fifty percent.

They were hired because Mike Lazzo was a fucking idiot who said something along the lines of, "Women can't handle conflict, that's why they aren't that funny and we don't have many women writers at Adult Swim". But their inexperience coupled with Dan's shitty direction because of his depression was just a perfect storm to turn one of the more unique shows [AS] has made into a completely forgettable and misguided trainwreck.

But the biggest problem is that season 3 was the most popular R&M has ever been. So none of these complaints or critiques even matter. The show will only decline more and more in quality.

Also to add onto it. In one episode Rick and morty abandon one universe because everyone turned into mutants but Jerry saved his family and they end up living on in that world.

I get that Jerry is supposed to be the punching bag like meg in family guy but they literally keep writing themselves into corners like this because once again they spend too much time writing about Mortys family and not about his wacky adventures with his grandpa. This show had really good potential of being the next futurama and that is what drew a lot of people in but they shit the bed

Make it comedy only and not drama mixed in with muh meaning, morales, muh existential dread and what not that makes the average cognitive functioning monkeys that watch this feel better as human beings, cause they are "smart and depressed". Don't make every character a twist on human psychology, just characters that are also funny , like in season 1.
The only thing they can leave in of that sort are the depressing episode endings, but don't make this stuff too tied to a plot or project it everywhere.
