The cartoon wasn't very popular in Europe, where the comics were popular among young girls. The characters sounded too American and the colors were dull and ugly. It might have been part of post-Iraq USA hate in general, but I remember my friends always saying how "yankees ruined it".

IMO if they brightened up the colors a bit and gave the characters bigger eyes (like in the comic), it would have been more successful. To me it felt like they tried to get boy audience with the TV show, which might be because Americans didn't have very good girl culture/"moe culture" in general. Young girls who loved the comic wanted bright colors, beautiful clothes and pretty girls. They clearly tried to tone down these parts in the TV show.

I don't have the link to the writer who talked about it, but that's literally what happened. Jetix was created and producers moved WITCH from Disney cartoon for teenage girls to action cartoon for the Jetix boy audience.
Essentially, the executives and producers were almost ashamed of it being an action cartoon with girls at the helm, so they made the writers bump the importance of some male characters in it and made the girls less girly, because otherwise boys might think it was gross. Or something like that.
