I got my copy of Bad Gateway yesterday, there's almost no comedy in this one. Megg makes herself look dirty and crazy so she can stay on welfare, Mogg tries to find a job and of course fails miserably, and Werewolf stays sober for a few days (turns into an unremarkable white guy) but ODs in their bathroom, then snaps to, nude, and drives his kids to the aquarium. We find out he has an infant daughter he's been keeping in a bird cage. There's maybe a few funny moments bit this whole book is remarkably sad. Owl only appears briefly in a flashback to when they were 19.

You've kind of got to read between the lines. WWJ is the person who is the most overtly horrible. He does the hardest drugs and deals out the most extreme abuse, both to his friends and his kids. But you really get the idea thta there's something fundamentally wrong with him that's not being addressed.
And Megg at worst is just a total bitch. She always seems to recognize when she's gone too far, but at least she's going to therapy and taking medication, and seems to actively want to not get as bad as WWJ or her mom.
Mogg however doesn't seem to ever give a fuck if the situation has gotten out of control. While WWJ seems to have gotten to where he is because something's wrong with him, Mogg is just a normal guy that completely burned out and has no desire to improve his station whatsoever. As long as nothing threatens his status quo, he's fine with it no matter how disgusting it is.

I don't relate to Owl, he's just an annoying whiny dork. I don't even give a shit about his actual flaws and how he enables them all, I just don't like his personality. Also, what this guy said. He's a "nice guy". A portion of his niceness is just a front in his quests to get laid. He is genuinely a better person than all of them, but that underhanded kind of kindness is repulsive in any amount, and so is the nerd rage that bursts out when he's "had enough". Being "nice" =/= being likable.
I dislike normal people who are like him more than trash people who aren't. But still, I like him about as much as Megg, because he can be amusing and not totally dweeby at times
Jones is the trashiest but he's my favorite because he's the funniest. The comic clown. The least controversial. He's dependable in how you can always know he'll be doing something outrageous, with little grey area. His kids' existence is sad as fuck, but he's portrayed as the comic relief more often than not.
Mogg is the worst from both an entertainment perspective and just being a terrible person. Megg is mid tier - she shows feeling and humanity more than Mogg, and I find her relatable in her moments of existential fear and anxiety. That's why she's the main character. And the family problems. I mean, my family aren't druggies and are and always have been relatively happy and getting better, but I know the bleak feeling.
This. Mogg is the worst because he voluntarily gives no fucks. Megg gives some fucks. Jones doesn't seem *capable* of giving a sustained fuck.

That's a very superficial way of seeing things.
First of all, the scene in the boys shower. Boys are showering in a room where the waterpark's owner had set up a one-way mirror. Hilarity insues when the glass is broken, but is that all there is to read into it?
That ENTIRE ISSUE had subtext about "sexual maturity". Listed:
- WWJ's kids talk about kissing practice.
- WWJ and MIKE have a conversation about the age of the girls they are spying on through a peephole. The scene is played in a comedic fashion as opposed to the later scene in the boy's shower. Megg's perspective is unexplored.
- No attention is given to WWJ's huge visible boner through the entire story. Not even when he is inside the boys' showers... The question asked here is: "Who is more evil? The waterpark owner whom the boys never knew the actions? Or the erect "self-righteous" adult scarring them for life?
Now I have't read XMP-165 before, but again pedophilia is a motif in both the overall story (second time owl's possible pedophilia is brought up) and the "polanski in space" Halo Chamber story.
Add to that the obvious cross-dressing self insert.
AND add to the fact that the child rapist's son is a BORDERLINE PORTRAIT (66.media.tumblr.com

I can understand where you're coming from, but at the same time, I think you're giving Megg too much credit. Moments like the end of "Amsterdam," where she is more content to block out the rest of the gang (in a rare moment of them all being supportive and constructive, mind you) and stew in isolation inside her pill mindset. Whether it's because of the fact that all the guys are in love with her or not, the reality is that the gang often dotes on her, and there is no evidence that any of this registers with her. Her therapy sessions don't come across as trying to better herself, rather that she is just trying to cope with her mental issues all while being a useless leech like Mogg.
Also, while most of the times Mogg is complicit when they do shitty things together, this page here is a great example where her actions are all on her. Megg in all strikes me as someone incredibly selfish and is just as capable of cruelty as the others.

That's only partially true. Mogg is very apathetic, but that doesn't stop him from being actively malevolent. He was the one who decided to trick Owl into relapsing with his drinking. He tries to incriminate Owl to the cops after the deli break-in for basically no reason besides finding it funny. It's implied he genuinely doesn't feel bad about drugging and then raping Owl as a prank, given that "sorry" is in quotes. It's made to sound like he's unaccustomed to saying such things, like he thinks of remorse more as an abstract concept than an intrinsically-felt emotion.
I've known people who are like this, and while their intelligence varies they've usually got a knack for cunning and manipulating people.

This part of "Knife Crime" really does a lot in summing up Mogg's character for me. There's a lot of shit wrong with him, most prominently his anxiety, paranoia, and self-image issues, so he puts on a mask of indifference to hide that from everyone else. He thinks it'll keep him from getting hurt, but it's a double-edged sword. Sure it'll keep people from finding out about his vulnerabilities, but it also guarantees that he won't be able to form any meaningful relationships, which ironically is what he seems to crave. His relationship with Megg because that's about as "real" of a connection as he'll get, which is why he's so possessive and paranoid. It's why he's willing to go to lengths like gaping his asshole to that shady drug dealer to score some weed for her or cover his face with a Hamburglar mask when she claims she's sick of his face.
Not to say that this excuses him. He's still a shitheel, but then again so is everyone else. It just baffles me a bit when people claim that they can feel at least a little sympathy for everyone else, but not Mogg

I almost liked that one more than the original "Rusty Brown" strip. It reminded me a lot of "Synecdoche, New York" given that it followed the life and times of an unsympathetic protagonist in extreme detail. Jordan Lint was an asshole, but you understood him. He was complex and he had universal, relatable qualities that we all have. He does lots of abhorrent things but his eventual death is still surprisingly poignant.
Chris Acme, the guy who did "Rusty Brown," wrote another graphic novel titled "Lint" that follows the entire life of one of the bullies who was featured picking on Rusty. Rusty makes a brief cameo in the middle but it's entirely about this Jordan Lint guy and how he's a terrible person while still being relatable on some level.

That is a very superficial read of the story. Of course everything ends horribly but "suicide" isn't the story. The story is "a child in a man's body has sex with little girls and is shunned by his peers leading to devastating consequences."

It's based heavily on people the author knows in Australia. I'm Irish and there are definitely some deprived parts of my 100K population city where if you could enter all the houses you'd find some people living like this. Let me be clear that most people in those neighborhoods are good people in a society that doesn't care about them, but that leads to people just giving up.
