How has Samus not had her own ongoing yet? Shit, get IDW, Dark Horse, someone.

Nintendo only seems to work with Dark Horse, which is a good decision.

Nintendo had a "no licensing to foreigners for anything but translations" policy in place for nearly 30 years, due in large part to the terrible DiC cartoons and the Mario movie. They're only just NOW lifting that policy for things like the Detective Pikachu movie (flopped) and the Illumination Mario movie (which we know is gonna be terrible; it's by the Minions people).

To be perfectly honest, all I know about Dark Horse is that they publish Hellboy and licensed stuff.

Detective Pikachu didn't flop. It made a decent, but not overwhelming profit.

I fucking hate that this corporate attitude of "anything that doesn't make gangbusters is a failure" has leaked into the masses. Fuck that psychotic shit.

Did Detective Pikachu flop? I didn't get a chance to see it in theaters, but that's highly disappointing.

It's in the top 10 of the year if that means anything

>Godzilla on 11th
Why didn't you give it more money, anons?

So, a hypothetical Metroid comic would eventually require Samus to interact with other characters. This is fine so long as she remains a woman of few words.

>Corruption: Voiced dialogue, Samus herself remains silent.
>Fusion: Samus doesn't talk until near the end when she needs to.
Seriously, it's less about tradition, and more about how it's just a consistent character trait.

Maybe if they got James Stokoe to do it, it could end up like his Alien comic. Hell most of his comics in general aren't high in wordcount.

Attached: 30286p2.jpg (600x884, 183K)

Or Samus speaks a lot, but mostly because other characters talk to her and she HAS to reply back. However, she uses the least amount of words possible and it's very clear to the readers that Samus feels bothered by the constant questions or attempts to initiate a conversation.

I gave both it and Shazam money, don't blame me.

Definitely requires an artist who's good at expressive faces and body language.

On that note, I would like it to sort of lean in to Samus being a bit socially awkward. Not full on sperg, but she was raised by a bunch of old monks, so it's likely she ain't good with people.

I again think the Samus from Samus and Joey is one of the best portrayals of her.

Attached: Samus-bulletcatch.jpg (840x2600, 768K)

Samus had a Nintendo Power comic run. It was pretty decent.

The problem right now is that Samus has been given a huge amount of "character development" that absolutely nobody wants to see. Anything official from Nintendo, or licensed by Nintendo, would necessarily include Zero Shit as part of the character. And, needless to say, every iteration of Samus is far better than the Other M rejects. Right now, the best we can hope is that Metroid 4 establishes a solid personality for Samus again, something to latch onto that isn't merely THE BABY THE BABY and gives a future comic any sort of potential.

Samus Returns had basically none of Other M's stuff.

user, you know as well as I do if something doesn't make at least a billion dollars, and then continue to generate increasingly higher amounts of profit perpetually, it's a failure.

>Samus Aran with Goblin Slayer's personality.
I would like this.

I would rather read about the Space Pirates.

Attached: SpacePirate_cropped.jpg (596x857, 260K)

I really need to get around to do a proper reading of Samus and Joey. For some reason, both this and the Prime 2 manga have her doing tons of insane over the top stunts like this, and it's fucking awesome.

This. SR has gone a good ways to scrubbing the filthy taste of Other M out of my mouth. The baby metroid scene in that game is great, and Samus is back to her old self.

Was there a reason Samus never appeared in the tv series?

A story about a newbie Space Pirate that slowly goes up on the rank scale, meets new friends, surpasses new challenges and builds a great life for himself.
>The story ends with Samus killing him and the guy never knowing what happened because it was a quick, unexpected and unceremoniously death.

Still managed to have a Donkey Kong Country show made in the late 90s.

Supposedly because the showrunners "never heard of her", even though her game's villain was the main antagonist of the show. Given that Mega Man is green, and Simon Belmont is a bootleg Gaston, I can believe that level of retardation.

I mean, they'd obviously be the main antagonists, so there'd be plenty of their wacky science shenanigans.

>Still managed to have a Donkey Kong Country show made in the late 90s.

Also the only foreign Nintendo-based cartoon to ever air in Japan (and it was actually popular; they even got Japanese celebrities to do voices and songs).

Nevertheless, the DKC cartoon was the LAST non-Japanese Nintendo cartoon until they let a few characters sneak into Wreck It Ralph 20 years later.

I liked that short side story. It's the journal of a space pirate who survived the three Prime games. All he wants is his waifu Dark Samus back.

Attached: Journal.jpg (649x383, 91K)

I like the Metroid games, but I'm kind of baffled by how people want to see so much more of Samus and the world

The whole point is you're on a lonely, eerily quiet trek through a world that's almost entirely hostile. Not a lot of room for dialog and plot and whatnot without turning it into dogshit like Other M

>the Pirates who worked for Dark Samus weren't mind controlled or infected, they were just waifu-fags
The sad part is that makes too much sense.

I would love to see Dark Samus having to put up with the sheer stupidity of her newly acquired subjects.
>And then, we took a bunch of rocks, and dumped a batch of phazon on them. And the pile became a monster!
>...

Because Samus is cool and the setting is cool. Simple as that.

Also, just because there are other people around, doesn't automatically mean the sense of loneliness and isolation cannot be conveyed. We've all seen that "alone in a crowd" shot.

Yeah, that's what I like about it.

>wanting modern comics to ruin Metroid even further
Samus has suffered enough already.

Reminder that Archie wanted to do a Metroid comic, but Nintendo said no, and they did Mega Man instead.

Samus and Joey is a genuinely fun read. Plot's not breaking any new ground, but it's got about what you'd want from a story set in the Metroid universe without trying to be a 1:1 adaptation of any of the games. Samus is a bit antisocial but more in the "tired, rough veteran" kind of way.

It also is full of fucking awesome moments like this.

Attached: Archie Metroid 6.jpg (524x800, 57K)

>Samus is a bit antisocial but more in the "tired, rough veteran" kind of way.
That's definitely the impression I got from what I have read. Games Samus doesn't quite seem "too old for this shit" level yet, but it works.

OMG I remember that shit. Was made in Canada and got delayed for a while on Teletoon. Was so happy as a kid but, like any full-CGI show of the era, boy it didn't age well.

I didn't know it was that popular there.

Sure as hell works better than what they tried to do for Other M, even if that isn't saying much.

Do the dachoras and etecoons appear in this comic? Cause that bit from Super would probably be a whole crazy training montage.

>Nintendo said no to an Archie Mario, Kirby, and Metroid comic
>Nintendo said okay to an ARMS comic, but got cancelled anyway
>Splatoon has a manga that nobody gives a shit about
What is with Nintendo and comics?

The Shinespark was always a hammy anime attack. It was originally from Getter Robo G, Metroid took the idea wholesale from it.

Attached: qgetter_robo_g_494.jpg (870x1294, 242K)

Trust issues. The Mario movie was bad, so they went full on scorched earth. Captain N was just fine though, I guess.

Also, Splatoon has a comic?

The US has an absolute SHIT record of adapting Nintendo properties for movies and cartoons.

>Saturday Supercade Donkey Kong/Jr.
>Super Mario Bros Super Shows
>DiC Legend of Zelda
>Captain Fucking N
>CG Donkey Kong Country
>The mother fucking SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE

All of that garbage in rapid succession is why Nintendo pulled the plug on all American adaptations of their properties in the mid 90s and haven't given the US another chance until Detective Pikachu (after testing the waters with cameos in Wreck It Ralph).

DKC adaptation was done in Canada. I think it is the same guys as ReBoot who made it.
>SMB movie
At least their casting choice was good for Mario and Luigi. Although Ron Jeremy and Peter North would have done well too.

I somehow forgot about that.

Real talk though, it's a blessing in disguise that Samus never got a cartoon during that era. It's the opposite of how Wondy got completely robbed during the DCAU days.

>Real talk though, it's a blessing in disguise that Samus never got a cartoon during that era.

Metroid almost got a DiC cartoon. There was a whole pitch package for Nintendo cartoons that ended up getting reworked into Captain N.

...DiC thought Samus was a man, as you can see.

Attached: Samus is a cool dude.png (470x532, 471K)

Oh I am aware of this, and I rest my fuckin case.

Silver lining; An episode where the showrunners hastily make up some bullshit about Samus disguising herself because someone finally told them she's a chick. Would've been hilarious.

>Shamus Aran, Scottish Bounthy Hunther

>Was there a reason Samus never appeared in the tv series?
>Supposedly because the showrunners "never heard of her"

Well, that's a lie, considering they included Samus in their early development pitch: I mean, they thought Samus was a guy, but they clearly knew the character existed. They likely just excised "him" from the cast because the character wasn't really needed and the core group filled all the roles/dynamics. Samus only showed up in the Valiant Captain N comics because they had to cut out Mega Man and Simon for licensing purposes and needed a character to take their place.

Its funny when people complain about things in Metroid being 'anime' when Samus was always just a bunch of 80s anime tropes mashed together.

Attached: shinespark.png (1784x916, 1.1M)

Manga actually. Licensed by Viz.

>Reminder that Archie wanted to do a Metroid comic, but Nintendo said no, and they did Mega Man instead.

Archie also pitched a Mario comic and Nintendo told them to go fuck themselves. Smart move, seeing as how Archie's incompetence lost them the Sonic license. If they couldn't handle Sonic, there's no way they could handle Mario.

Attached: 667.jpg (782x1188, 878K)

Samus has to get groceries and interact with people some time. She also used to work for the galactic federation, so you could always explore that.

>"Let's take Aliens... and make it anime!"
Not even sure which anime though. Dirty Pair, maybe?

The Valiant comics proved Samus makes an excellent sixth ranger. Also, fuck Pit. Easily could've cut him, since Kid Icarus was never popular until Sakurai jizzed all over it and gave it an actual identity. And waifus. Lots of waifus, fuck.

Using Samus to replace Mega Man and Simon Belmont in the comic version of Captain N for legal reasons was actually a really clever move. She covered Mega Man's sci-fi angle and even had a helmet and blaster arm just like him. And she completed the love triangle, albeit now it was two girls fighting over Kevin instead of two guys fighting over Princess Lana (and improvement!). The Captain N comic wasn't exactly a huge stride more accurate than the cartoon, and was limited since they couldn't cover as many games as the show because of licensing, but it was clear that the people at Valiant gave a fraction of a fuck more than the people at DiC.

I don't want any chance of Trans Samus showing up in official merchandise.

There's also that one Mario manga that's been running since Super Mario World.

>I don't want any chance of Trans Samus showing up in official merchandise.

This is what a pro comic artist says Samus should look like.

I think it's possible to do a quiet Samus in a show, particularly animated

You're just looking for an excuse to post this twitter garbage aren't you?

>The whole point is you're on a lonely, eerily quiet trek through a world that's almost entirely hostile. Not a lot of room for dialog and plot and whatnot without turning it into dogshit like Other M

I know it'd never happen, but you can do quiet movies that are still tense and with characters that still have personality. A Quiet Place had next to no dialogue due to its conceit. But yeah, I know, modern day American media is a Joss Whedon quip-a-thon so we could never have a quiet, pensive Samus. I'm just sayin'.

On the contrary, Samus calling out idiotic decisions is very welcome.

Attached: SamusAndJoey11.jpg (1400x2179, 1.47M)

Why do Americans hate beauty? What did beauty ever do to you?

Yep. Credit to Valiant, they actually did their best, and Samus herself is easily the best part of the whole thing.

Gotta say though, never really bought the whole love triangle. Call me a biased waifu-fag(which I am), but how the fuck is this even a triangle? Samus>Lana. No question.

Remember where you are. Of course he was.

>Not even sure which anime though. Dirty Pair, maybe?
The suit's helmet is just a Zaku's head without the monoeye.

As for the Varia suit's strange proportions I think that was influenced by Dragon's Heaven but I have no proof of this.

I do love the idea of Samus being a cool aunt type.

Also, that's a hell of a voice filter she's using, since Joey legit thinks she's a guy until the very end when they do the 'Samus is a girl' reveal. Then again, Joey is a dumbass, so...

Most characters in the manga think Samus is a dude, so it's most definitely a voice filter.

Oh, ARMS. Nintendo really, really wanted that to be the next Splatoon.

>make show
>but barely provide any references to the people making show so they pretty much have to draw what they intepret sprites on screen as and at best you fax over a black and white photocopy of an instruction manual to someone.

In a bizarre sense, Captain N is actually an incredibly accurate show-- because they literally were drawing the games themselves with little else to work with a lot of the time.

Yeah, much as folks rightly rail on DiC for fucking up, Nintendo didn't help. Like, literally did not provide any assistance whatsoever.

Back then, Nintendo figured any advertisement was good advertisement no matter how inaccurate it was to their games. They had such high hopes for the Mario movie that they didn't even know or care about the production hell it was in, and then they saw the end product and regretted their negligence.

And then they went the opposite direction and got all draconian about it.

Does it? Cause while it is silly, it's pretty harmless. Also, that was a pretty good story in which Samus had total agency and was about her decisions and desires.

Wait, I'm giving too much credit. They're just salty that they couldn't woo Samus, aren't they?

>First Carol Danvers, now Samus Aran. What is it about characters voiced by Jennifer Hale that makes American artists want to redraw them as nasty masculine bulldykes?

Didn't all of Jennifer Hale's dialogue get deleted from Prime and you can never actually hear her as Samus in the game? Kinda doesn't count if you have to hack the game looking for unutilized content.

America is the world's #1 exporter of entertainment media. The rest of the world, thanks to the glut of American influence, gradually globalizes and remolds to reflect the tastes presented in American media. Eventually, the hypermasculine female designs will be adopted by other countries as well and feminine beauty will be completely eradicated. Thanks, Americans.

No idea, never played any Metroid games.

Not anymore. She's a dainty little thing, just how Japan likes it.

>Isn't Samus officially like 8ft. tall and 200lbs of pure muscle according to some Nintendo-approved Japanese guide book diagram or something?

The Japanese Super Metroid manual included this break down of her suit's powers plus her height and weight claiming she was 6'3" and 198lbs. That was canon at the time, but whatever game introduced the Zero Suit retconned her into being a regular-sized woman and not some Space Amazon.

Attached: Untitled.jpg (854x586, 192K)

I think the height at least is still canon. Her Dharkon puppet self towered over the fighters standing next to her in the Hero's reveal trailer.

>Would a comic/cartoon have the balls to make new items? Suits/Beams/Visors/Morph Ball functions/movement systems, etc.

Nintendo is extremely strict with their IPs; they likely wouldn't allow any modifications to Samus that did not have a precedent from a Nintendo game.

Fuck, even Sega won't allow IDW to let Sonic wear clothes, even scuba gear, in their comic. And that's SEGA. Nintendo would by a hundred times more strict.

They already fucked her up by giving complete control to one of the Metroid creators and he went full George Lucas but even worse because he waifufagged Samus too hard and self-inserted as Adam. That almost killed Metroid for a very fucking long time.

Also the state of US comic books would probably give us a Metroid comic by IDW with a writer that knows shit about Metroid except from what they read on a wiki article.
They had those Nintendo Power comics with Benimaru Itoh with purple haired Samus, then had those Metroid Prime companion comics but they weren't too deep.

Yeah. If precedent is required, then there's no real problem, since Samus has approximately one shitbillion abilities and weapons. Hell, Aeon abilities are a thing now, so that could be fun. Fucking Phase Drift.

Thing is, I'd kind of respect the gall of making up new tools. Especially with suits. Samus doesn't actually have nearly as many suits compared to the other stuff.

She looks weird here but she doesn't look as fake and as bad as Echoes Samus. Samus from Metroid Prime Hunters was the best.

She did some narrating that got cut but all the grunts and screams Samus makes are supposedly made by her.

Still she is the best voice for Samus.

I never got why people say she has a maternal instinct especially since she always saw the baby metroid as an animal or creature and she behaved that way towards it. The only reason why she didn't killed it on sight was because the baby metroid didn't attack her.

She does however have a soft spot for cute creatures.

Eh, I feel if Nintendo had okayed the Archie pitch, it would've turned out fine. It would've been done by Flynn, and say what you will about him, dude does do the research. Of course, there would've been some OC shenanigans, and Archie's dumb four issue trade mandate would've been annoying, but overall it would've been fine.

And remember, this was before Other M came out, so it wouldn't have had any of that disgusting bullshit. The concept art does vaguely imply that the manga would been a strong influence though. Hopefully without all the things that weighed it down.

Seriously, the hell was up with that? Did they have to cobble the model together in just a few hours or something. Yikes.

>but whatever game introduced the Zero Suit retconned her into being a regular-sized woman and not some Space Amazon.
This is blatantly incorrect. Zero Mission, the game that introduced the Zero Suit, made no reference to Samus being shorter. The only game that tried to retcon Samus' height was Other M, and Other M's Samus model is literally too short to fit in her armor now.

Samus Returns in contrast keeps her the same height in and out of armor.

Attached: SamusReturns_endings.jpg (1195x718, 137K)

Samus lived on a world with higher gravity than Earth after the Chozo adopted her, it's all muscle density.

I am so happy the Gravity Suit has its own design now as opposed to being little more than a shitty palate swap. I also like that ZS Samus in SR is just doing a cool pose that isn't really meant to be fanservice-y, she's just doing a cool pose.

... Yo, Samus Returns really went a long way to placing a hotfix on this franchise. Like with this bit, for example.

Attached: Samus is done with Diggernaut's shit.png (623x370, 354K)

Right? It's so nice.

Hopefully things will go over well for Prime 4.

Samus was originally a brunette in the NES game. Green hair was for when she had the Varia active.

If nothing else, the development restart shows they are at least trying to make a good game.

Metroid F-Zero comic please

>what I would expect: Samus and Captain Falcon badass teamuppery
>what I would want: Samus and Mrs. Arrow vigorously comparing workout regimens

Because giving metroid a story is a dicey as fuck proposition at this point due to all the different things people see in Samus.

You have everything from people that see her as doomguy-but-female, to a stoic/collected professional, to a damaged girl with severe daddy issues, or even cumbrains deciding she's some kind of space dominatrix. No way you'll make everyone happy if you try to make samus a concrete voiced character this far in.

Just do what Prime does.

this could've been prevented if Samus were a robot.

>and haven't given the US another chance until Detective Pikachu

And even then that was The Pokemon Company making the push, not really Nintendo.

Nintendo itself is just recently trying to dip their toes in other media and they are still too scared to jump in. I'm sure the reason the animated Mario movie still hasnt shown anything is because Nintendo is fighting with Ilumination a lot

fuck off, skynet
