You really get the feeling Kirby never gave a shit about the X-Men. F4 and Thor were obviously his babies but X-Men are so far down the list you can barely see them.
At one point he was penciling and doing layouts for like 7 comics at the same time. FF and Thor were the comics he stuck with and looking at the later issues you can see the sudden jump in quality
