grids are old fashioned and uncool. every other panel in modern comics has to either be super wide or a full bleed blowout. contemporary comics with a straight forward layout are few and far between since they're considered unexciting and slow. you're better off just looking at the golden/silverage comics that inspired Bone like Pogo and Bark's Donald Duck stories.

It's the series' motif for dreaming, because when your eyes are closed you technically just see darkness while your mind overlays a dream.
