Metal doesn't really have a personality, which is an issue. Shadow was fine during SA2, problem is no one knew how to write him afterward for some reason. As for people mistaking Sonic for Shadow, I always thought it was because the guy was so fast that Sonic + a shitty dye job disguise was more likely to most people than another supersonic hedgehog they'd somehow never heard of running around. That and GUN probably didn't want to admit how they just lost a living weapon so played up the idea to cover their asses.

Evermore this rewritten plot would even tie better into Sonic Heroes with Metal going rogue after SA2's defeat and with the original character setup one of the jap devs said was going to be in Heroes which included Mighty and Ray, everything could have been accounted for a Shadowless timeline. No ShTH to make the series look worse, and without forced time spent on Shadow's game, 06 would have had more dev time to be completed proper.

Sonic is the perfect corporate creation to appeal to older children and tweens, and thus autists too.

That's part of his appeal, at least for me, he's pretty close to lots of girls, Maria, Rouge, Amy (at the least she's the one who convinced him not to blow up the Earth), but his relationships with them are completely platonic. It's a nice change of pace, he's sexually non-threatening enough you can just like imagine hanging out with him without it being weird, but just hot enough that people find him strangely attractive anyway.
