Is it harder now than ever trying to market new characters/heroes to the masses? I'm getting the impression that unless said character appears in a cartoon, tv show, or movie, their potential to carry a solo book or gain a following is slim. Has the abundance of current heroes and their gimmicks residing in both DC and Marvel universes made it even harder? It shouldn't be a surprise why legacies are pushed more than completely new heroes. Like for example the name Thor sells, but not Sideways (keep in mind I'm talking brand power, not character preferences).
Which brings me to Aero; does anyone give a shit? Does she have a future? Is it partly the fan/consumer's fault for not funding new blood? Granted I'm not saying spend money on trash writing, but still. In your mind, what is the right way to integrate new characters in cape comics?
I'd say appearances in other books. If you give a new character enough of a spotlight in a Spider-Man comic, you could get fans interested in them.
Angel Robinson
I refuse ti believe Marvel approved that cover
Blake Garcia
I think it also depends on how much the higher ups care about that character and want them to succeed and how much are they the higher ups favorites? Compare Aero to someone like Kamala Khan or Miles Morales. How much is she being pushed compared to them when they first appeared?
But yes, you're right that a character with comics alone doesn't necessarily succeed but could the comic being shit or them not being accessible also contribute? My cousin liked Spider-Gwen even before the Spider-Verse comic and had a lot of Spider-Gwen related merch but she didn't read the comics. From what she told me she tried reading them and they were "ugly, boring, and confusing" but she liked her design enough to buy stuff with her. She eventually liked her in Spider-Verse and liked the other characters.
>I'm getting the impression that unless said character appears in a cartoon, tv show, or movie, their potential to carry a solo book or gain a following is slim. Not even then, see Nova/Sam Alexander and how hard he was pushed in Marvel games and the USM cartoon, but a lot of people never got into the character the way they did with Miles and Kamala and IMO Sam had the better comic post-Loeb.
Adam Jones
She has a shot.
Honestly, I'm more interested in that other guy with the sword. The only reason I'm not pulling that book is because my LCS is small and didn't have it. I'm still supporting a new character by pulling Collapser, so there's that.
Noah Kelly
>Is it harder now than ever trying to market new characters/heroes to the masses?
#1 Comics sell the most, so people are willing to try new things.but they cant get people to stay
Joseph Gutierrez
Maybe Marvel has finally come to the realization that most comic book nerds like their female heroines to be attractive? Though that does seem kinda hard to believe.
But I feel like nearly every time that happens Yea Forums starts throwing a fit saying "GOD! Why is the writer pushing this OC creation?". Not necessarily disagreeing with you, just making a point. How much was Kamala pushed during her introduction? I faintly recall Marvel making a big deal about "Muslim superhero" >Spider-Gwen Don't take this the wrong way, but your cousin sounds really superficial. But you're onto something here; character means jack shit if the costume sells. Is there any art of Aero that isn't manga-lite?
Easton Rivera
Buy the book to show that there are people who would buy comics like that.
I think the best thing is for the character to survive one or two arcs in there own book, then have them guest star in SINGE ISSUE stories in other books. Don't push them with big events, making them supporting cast members of other books, or part of teams, just start small and work from there. Ms. Marvel is a great example of this.
James Nguyen
I think Marvel is doing the bait and switch routine. For example they'll sell covers of classic She-Hulk, and yet Aaron will still push his drag show queen in his books. I think Aero here has a costume problem. While I can respect striving for simplicity and a jacket to compliment her wind powers, the white is kind of boring and I don't entirely understand said jacket.
Easton Perry
>#1 Comics sell the most Only because the major publishers prop them up to be. They get the most advertisements and a ton of variant covers.
simple is better. Wave looks better there too without the damned armor nonsense
Lincoln Carter
Why the fuck the origin of a new hero has to be in several floppies. Cant the origin be done and sold in one book? Whos going to stick around to read an origin that takes several issues like get to the point already
Noah Bennett
They did that with Darkhawk and Sleepwalker back in the day, and damn it if it didnt work. Those two were my fave non-Spidey books when I was a kid because they showed up and were cool as guest-stars without getting in my face about it
Jayden Wilson
Her webcomic is pretty damn popular in China. Millions of views
John Gutierrez
>#1 Comics sell the most, so people are willing to try new things. And then they crash horribly at #2. It has very little to do with people trying new things. Unless they get out of comics then they will never gain mass appeal. I think DC is trying with Jessica but the last true break out was Deadpool
Kayden Ortiz
I honestly really like the whole transparent jacket thing, it's pretty neat and works well with her powers.
James Jenkins
>Darkhawk and Sleepwalker While not popular, both of them have withstood the test of time and always come back every few years.
Carter White
>Has the abundance of current heroes and their gimmicks residing in both DC and Marvel universes made it even harder? no, only a few heroes are active at a time the rest are unused limbo
Gabriel Watson
I don't get DC and Marvel haven't tried doing the webcomic route in the US? It seems to be doing really well in countries like China and Korea. Heck Japan is now doing it and finding success with it.
Noah Carter
Comics as a medium is very niche and a lot of the people who sustain it are really in it for the characters they like already. The other parts that sustain it are just normies who'd only care about and recognize the characters who've made a splash in pop culture long enough to maintain their popularity momentum.
As for how to make a character stand out, I agree with what a lot of people have said in this thread; design is probably even more important than good story telling and unfortunately not too many new characters have a look that makes them stand out. Characters like Spider Gwen and Kamala, while being legacy, still have a design that distinguishes them from the characters they derive from. Others not so much. Appearance can make or break even a series. Hell I'd probably argue the main reason why a lot of the recent top indie comics sell as much as they do is purely based on the art style and presentability of the comic rather than anyone actually liking their writing since a lot of the shit is stuff that had been done in comics and literature before. So I guess it's not really a matter of how surrounded you are by other comics as much as it is looking pretty enough to be an appealing grab.
William Gray
It kinda worked with Miles, not at all with Alpha, and Silk is kinda known
Nicholas Moore
I like Aero but honestly I don't think she's gonna make a big splash without a serious concerted effort that marvel doesn't want to seem to give anyone outside their big names or pets. Which is a real shame.
Adrian Reyes
Again I get the reasoning behind the jacket design, just not sure what the explanation/purpose is in universe. I'm not sure what's turning me off on the white though. I'm a guy who loved the Future Foundation Spider-Man suit
Colton Thomas
Wave looks better, I really don't see agency in the character
Lucas Roberts
Mind spoonfeeding me, user? Was this just a fan webcomic they bought the rights too?
Logan Adams
I mean it's really no different than a lot of clothing and merch brands for a lot of people, it's an image that they like and they want to have it. And it's not just her though a lot of Marvel fans (or superhero fans in general) that I've met are more into the image than the characters themselves. Hell even in the movies, I've met people that claim to love Captain Marvel that can't tell me jack shit about the movie's plot, and they can't remember some of the character's names that aren't Coulson, Carol, Fury's or the Cat's.
And to be fair to my cousin Spider-Gwen wasn't that good of a comic (it had interesting concepts that ultimately went nowhere) and she does love Spider-Girl and that's mostly because she got a free subscription to the comic through her school from Marvel during a scholastic event and she got into the character by reading the comic. When her subscription ended she asked me to get her more comics, especially since Spectacular Spider-Girl was hard to come by (I think it was digital only, I am not sure but there was something about it). That said she doesn't really touch the newer comics with Mayday because she knows DeFalco isn't writing them and she hated what I told her about what Slott did in Spider-verse. Also Mayday isn't in a stable comic or something she can read regularly and access with an affordable price (which opens a new can of worms as to the comic market being shit and Diamond and other factors).
Brody Bell
>Is it harder now than ever trying to market new characters/heroes to the masses? I'm getting the impression that unless said character appears in a cartoon, tv show, or movie, their potential to carry a solo book or gain a following is slim.
Manga doesn't have this problem
Landon Rodriguez
Manga has the advantage of foreign appeal and not being shy from straying into softcore porn
Carson Green
Manga is sold in a completely different format.
Jackson Williams
>Granted I'm not saying spend money on trash writing That's why I am hesitant to buy new shit and just pirate it and then decide if I want to support it. Especially since a lot of these new comics are awful and have writers who don't really care about the characters or don't care enough to make a coherent plot. Then we have artists who might be good at pin ups and commission drawings but suck ass at doing sequential art.
>I think it also depends on how much the higher ups care about that character and want them to succeed and how much are they the higher ups favorites? This too, before Riri was made we had Lila Rhodes who essentially was Rhodes' smart tech niece and she pretty much was a similar concept to what Riri is now. During Hickman's Secret Wars event we had a story with her donning Iron Man like armor.
But Riri is the one being pushed despite being a similar concept and she's the popular, only because Bendis made her and he has friends in the comic industry and Feige took notice of her.
I don't think Riri is Kamala or Miles levels of popular yet but she's heavily pushed and won't go away anytime soon, especially since Feige acknowledged the character's existence.
Cooper Bell
So relevant to this discussion, thanks weeb.
Christian Torres
and?
John White
AERO SO CHESTY.
Also, that Artgerm cover is the only reason why I bought that book. ONLY reason.
Angel Reed
You just have to look at how much Marvel wants to insist people care about Gwen while all but ignore what Mayday achieved.
They're called airbags, user. Those big balloons help her fly
Justin Perry
I actually do like the costume a lot. Very simple. Sort of got a nice retro future thing going on. It's very classic super hero stuff. I wonder if the jacket would be better as a cape though.
The whole architect thing is nice. I certainly want to see her past explored more but I think that's a good way of justifying her super heroics. "I built this buildings to be people's homes. Stop breaking my shit!" Certainly gives her a reason to be protective.
Also big Chinese tits. I really like big Chinese tits.
>just not sure what the explanation/purpose is in universe Maybe she thinks it looks cool? Not every sandal needs an entire page complete with lore on a wiki.
Brandon Young
I think the bigger question is what is it made out of. Is it tech? Made of magic wind? Is it just transparent?
Sebastian Collins
Riri is never going to get popular, Bendis is gone and Marvel isn't putting any effort to her in the same way Miles and Kamela had.
Andrew Wilson
Ok, I have to ask, why can't comic publishers get 5 to 15 second commercials for their comics?
Landon Gray
Hey I'm not asking for 30 pages of lore and I can respect the rule of cool. But give me a line or something. What is it? Does it help her at all? Aesthetically I get it, and approve, but cmon
Lincoln Brown
>Riri is never going to get popular, She will when they bring her in for phase 5
Jayden Green
>The abundance of current heroes and their gimmicks residing in both DC and Marvel universes made it even harder. It shouldn't be a surprise why legacies are pushed more than completely new heroes. fixed say what you mean and mean what you say
David Nelson
>Also big Chinese tits. I really like big Chinese tits How did they get away with this without anyone bitching?
Hudson Miller
Rule of cool, dumbass
Anthony Watson
Okay I'll admit the costume is growing on me now. I also think the architect angle is a good direction to go given the nature of collateral damage in comics. She gives a shit not just to save lives, but because the city she helped create is at risk
Western style drawing allways put me down when reading comics, they try too much to look realistic but fail at it so bad that it just look less human than drawing them in a cartoon style
Thomas Sanchez
Streaming service at best and thats only with War-Machine.
Nathan Martinez
Yeah, is it anti-grav fabric or what
Julian Anderson
Because when it comes to new superheroes, go big or don't do it at all.
People would care less if she didn't have big ones.
James Jackson
A big part of it is getting enough marketing coverage out there. Marvel did a huge push that caught my eye for Kamala and continued to push her in multiple related IPs. She honestly is like a sole survivor of the popular Inhumans at this point.
Aiden Bell
Hey thanks for following the conversation chain. That was acknowledged and brought up.
Elijah Rodriguez
Can someone give me a rundown on who Aero is? Not familiar with the character, but she looks qt and her design is aesthetic.
Christopher Barnes
I really think this gives her a lot of potential for team up stories. Especially your more smashy tier heroes.
We don't really know a whole lot about her just just yet. She's had one issue out. The short of it is she's a Hong Kong architect with wind powers and knows Jimmy Woo.
Joseph Hall
With all this talk about her boobs, is Aero the Marvel Power Girl?
Aiden Jones
eerr Shanghai. rather.
Ayden Garcia
They also doesnt shy away from experimenting whit new ideas, worlds and characters, so the medium is filled whit creativity, even in the shonen jump that is the less experimental of them all you can find mangas about literally writting a manga
Benjamin Wilson
New hero Marvel is rolling out. She's an architect in Shanghai with powers that let her control air, only a single volume has come out so far so beyond that we don't know much about her other than she has a boyfriend we've yet to meet.
I have to give credit to Marvel, they are hell bent at trying to appeal to as many different demographics as possible to buy their books. A lot of the Young Avengers and x-men are flaming queers and woke. What does DC even do besides having Harley or Batgirl be gay?
Jace Myers
>Is Aero supposed to appeal to K-Pop stans?
No that's another character
Lincoln Roberts
>Is Aero supposed to appeal to K-Pop stans? Nah that suppose to be Luna Snow.
>Is Aero supposed to appeal to K-Pop stans? No that's still that Killer Frost knockoff they created from a mobile game (whose name escapes me right now). >What does DC even do besides having Harley or Batgirl be gay? They had The Justice League of China, which was pretty damn good
See I think this kind of international pandering comes off as way more tasteful than the other kind. Hell I'd be happy just to get some cape books not set in New Fucking York. But these international hero teams always felt cool to me.
Brandon Ramirez
>that anatomy
What the fuck.
Benjamin Fisher
She's cute. No bully.
Caleb Morgan
Honestly it seems there are two big ways to get serious focus
1. Be in a cartoon/comic someone influential grew up on
2. Be someone influential's OC pet.
We're gonna see a lot more Kitty/Jubilee/X23 wank before someone starts pushing, I dunno, Armor. I'd push Armor.
At the very least, they need to advertise the fact that you can even buy comics digitally. Because you have no idea how many not even notice things like Unlinted or comixology even exist.
Ian Flores
>Honestly it seems there are two big ways to get serious focus >1. Be in a cartoon/comic someone influential grew up on Agreed but also you forgot video games. THere is one caveat to that the show or game cant be low-effort it has to be somewhat decent or popular.
Luis Reyes
well yes, but you get the idea. A character who had a strong focus outside the books can have been absent for a larger portion of the books run and said fans will still be all "WHERE'S MUH X" I mean just look at how badly Cass Cain got fucked over because Babs was the only BG anyone knows despite the fact that she's the only one they used outside the book which creates a cycle of BS. Doesn't matter her book last almost a decade.
>badly Cass Cain got fucked over because Babs was the only BG anyone knows Well that and editorial hates her for some reason
Aiden Wilson
Because she wasn't the one they had a nostalgia boner for.
Anthony Barnes
>medium titted asian showing no titty or tummy Pass
Juan Reed
Skintight suits are nice
Owen Harris
I think that Sword Master had a much stronger start compared to Aero. Aero's first issue was just her monologuing a lot while fighting, where as Sword Master actually managed to introduce us to characters and set up a story.
William Flores
Skintight suits are the best. It's what I like about her costume the most. It's very super heroic.
I think SM will probably have a harder time fitting in with the marvel universe though. He feels like he should be in his own stand alone universe but then you got Shang Chi showing up.
Connor Bennett
Cassandra is not the default Batgirl. Just like Wally isnt the default Flash, despite having the best 'passing of the torch' story in all of superhero comics and being in the Justice League cartoon.
West era lasted 20+ yrs now Barry is the main Flash again.
Don't underestimate the power the 'default' character friend, it's a powerful thing it transcends story and gets into 'collective consciousness' territory. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collective_consciousness
Jace Jackson
How did Barry end up the default when he himself is a legacy?
Joshua Jones
When they're not busy pirating stuff through Baidu or Bilibili or whatever else the Chinese have a very negative view of manipulative Marketing practices, like Aero or more specifically Awkwafina in the upcoming Shang Chi movie.
In both the comics and movies, white progressives write Asians as ugly or out of shape or having some defect that could take attention away from the author's OC.
This is acknowledged as much by Asian markets as by the West, and it's foolish for Marvel Comics/Studios/etc to push such a shameless "we want the Chinese" move.
White good characters first, identities second. Why is this so hard?
Jackson Reyes
>White good characters first
racist
Luke Richardson
That's a good question. Usually, the original (first) is the default but characters like Barry, Hal Jordan managed to surpass their originals by being the character that set up the a lot amount of lore/rules for their brand. Second, their costume designs became the standard template that the other designs proceeded it
also like mentioned cartoon, movies, tv shows, toys, merch also helps
Its help that mob was one next big job after OPM become a big thing and a lot and i mean A LOT of artist got exited whit it The anime got so many big names and close to a movie treatment, its wasnt even the A team, it was a S tier team of artist God im going to rewatch reigen episode right now
Sebastian Richardson
He came out in the silver age is where a lot of classic heroes really made their names.
Austin Miller
It's probably because the industry is filled to the brim with shit-tier tumblr artists and feminist cunts that have no creative bones in their bodies and don't understand the American comic industry.
Robert Howard
Nah. Even before this current wave of SJW shit and pet characters it was hard for a lot of newer heroes to get traction because everyone was too busy wanking off the already established mega popular ones. The X-men especially are a prime example.
Well first off, you’re right that future fight isn’t canon, but that character isn’t from future fight and war of the realms new agents of atlas, where she first debut in the west, is canon along with the translated chinese comics.
Kayden Martinez
Yeah well "Luna Snow" isn't going to get any traction or presence regardless. Marvel is dead set on pushing Iceman, and look how well he turned out
Mason Lewis
It’s not bad, but they went with the most generic translation for a title, now I’m waiting for him to team up with Swordsman.
Brayden Sullivan
She’s in a team mini and has a one shot coming out later along with the other future fight OC and white fox, what the fuck ever made you think that marvel was going to push her to replace iceman?
Camden Stewart
>and look how well he turned out you mean "came out" right?
I don't think anyone is asking for that much but I also think we can do better than a one shot that no one will hear of.
Kayden Torres
>We saw him briefly. He looks like kind of a geek if you ask me. He must be loaded if he can pull in this kind of prime cutie Well, there goes the otaku appeal.
Ryder Morgan
because Aero is Disneys baby, Disney is a pretty liberal company but it's run by serious people and the bottom line, company wide has been to push into china. Aero, Swordmaster and the New Agents of Atlas are the result of an email sent from disney executives to marvels, simply titled: Go to fucking china.
Why? because Disney has billions of dollars invested into china and they still won't give them a television station. China doesn't want some shitty western station playing nothing but reruns of the avengers all day. China wants to see chinese people doing chinese things on their TV sets- and that is the one thing that they don't have yet.
Marvel probably pitched some ideas about making aero a feminist icon, but Disneys executives weren't having it. They are the world leader at making household names. They know how to get shit done. So they gave superpowers to a generic waifu and called it a day: perfection.
Luis Hernandez
don't think about the japanese. there is a reason there isn't a japanese character in NAA. China views dating a lot differently, if a girl doesn't have a boyfriend she would be seen as shrewd and viewed with suspicion at her age.
Luna snow is going to explode. Notice how all of the new heroes are shit easy to cosplay. In three years they will all become convention favorites. especially luna snow. Just wait until they announce some famous kpop star to play her.
I take you have never seen the covers for the Conan-related books.
William Campbell
I want to see someone who can fill out the Aero costume. Wonder how you could do the coat. Clear rain coat?
Cameron Jones
>the first English translation Is this a full-blown manhua that was released earlier, or a brand new story with the character?
Isaac Edwards
There are so many different ways. in a couple years there will be shitty wish app knockoffs. Good versions might even have LED wire sewn in to give it the same glow that it has in the comics.
Charles Powell
The most recent new characters that aren't reskins of pre-existing characters I can think of that became mainstream: >Deadpool (1990s) >Runaways (early 2000s) >Harley Quinn (1990s)
Henry Murphy
her first appearance is in New Agents of Atlas
Jayden Bell
Yeah it's the manhua that was already released in china being translated for the west, with a new backup story written by Pak.
James Hughes
They're putting the filipina in the next future fight update, along with Nampr and the Silver Surfer.
Like Aero Like Sword Master Kind digging the kung fu kid with the magic bear Not sure how much I like everyone GUSHING over Luna Snow. I swear every word out of Silk's mouth is OMG SHE'S SO TEH BEST. Also fuck Silk.
Jackson Foster
>Also fuck Silk Would if I could, I'd empty my balls to the point of dehydration in Silk.
Jace Gutierrez
Are Asian's famous for liking Spam? Am I missing something?
>does anyone give a shit? Me Does she have a future? Yes > Is it partly the fan/consumer's fault for not funding new blood? ? >what is the right way to integrate new characters in cape comics? Create a new character like Aero.
Easton Allen
Yes.
Parker Cooper
...buddy artists draw female characters as sexually appealing...all the time...don’t let Yea Forums delude you and actually pick up a comic
Isaac Jenkins
Because its a story arc??? Honestly why not A lot of beloved origin stories take place over several floppies
Dominic Martin
>muh porn Wow how shallow What a surprise
Brody Cruz
Man thats just sad No wonder female characters barely have any semblance of personality
Charles Powell
This is why not. Comics have never been more expensive and while I did buy the book a new reader isn't going to want to spend 20 bucks and spend 4 to 5 months to get the full origin story.
You can add in all the story details later but the first issue should get you up to speed on why you want to connect with the character. Part of the problem with Miles was that it took him 5 times as long to get his book up in the air than it did Peter. In that single issue of Amazing Fantasy Spider-man became a sensation and the world was built on the back of that.
Don't assume your character is a hit before they are. Think of it like this. Mayday's book went for over a 100 issues, and she just started out in a single What If. Spider-Gwen is always getting cancelled but Marvel decided she was a hit before anyone liked her.
Ok fair enough good point! Comics are pretty expensive and I guess peppering their origins in their stories might make more sense Thanks user!
Dominic White
If without the expense there's just issue of time. You really want to hook them. A legacy hero may get some interest from spill over fans but a brand new character has a very uphill battle. You really need to draw them in otherwise you run the risk of them just not caring to pick up the next book and a lukewarm cliffhanger isn't always enough, especially if they're not invested.
No. The characters just suck. Fuck SJWs. Fuck niggers Fuck trannies. Fuck tranny jannies. And fuck you.
Ethan Walker
The animesque artstyle probably helps.
Angel White
i'd say yes. comic fans don't usually warm up to new characters. they either complain about the character being derivative or the writing is shit. only very few characters gain instant traction. kk is one of them and most of its waifufaggotry. characters can take a while to become appreciated. it's up to writers to keep using them over decades. it's even better if the character is able to fill a niche, but with some many created characters, that's hard to do.
I'd love to kick Warwick Davis in the head. Just take a few steps run up then catch him with the full force of my steel capped toe under his chin, send that little faggot flying through the air.
As he lies on the floor, coughing and wheezing and chocking on his own blood, his jaw a mangled mess of bones detached from the rest of his skull, I stand over him and laugh wickedly. He looks up at me in fear and pain, his eyes searching, begging me for mercy. He finds none. I raise my boot then stomp down, splitting his skull like a melon and finally ending his pathetic life.
>what the fuck ever made you think that marvel was going to push her to replace iceman? I never said they were trying to replace Iceman you retard
Ryan Thompson
Sure, but she has the added benefit of using a well known brand name, Green Lantern. I love Jess but there's a reason why she didn't stay as Power Ring
Christopher Bell
It's a mix of established characters and newer characters created in China, Korea or the Future Fight mobile game
Jimmy Woo Shang-Chi Amadeus Cho as Brawn Silk
White Fox (who was created for a Korean webtoon, showed up in the comics previously for the Contest of Champions, got into Future Fight) a South Korean super agent who is also the last of the Kumiho, the 9 tailed Foxes. She has 9 powers, one for each tail Luna Snow (from Future Fight) K-Pop idol who got into an accident that gave her ice powers Crescent and Io (from Future Fight) a 10 year old girl taekwando prodigy who put on magical mask that summons an apparition of a bear to fight alongside her
Aero (created for comics that were originally produced in China and are now being translated to English) wind manipulator, haven't really gone into her origins yet. Sword Master (same as Aero) his father was an archeologist who found a magical sword but soon disappeared on an expedition along with Sword Master's brother
Wave (only brand new character) hydrokinetic. She was almost an Olympic level swimmer for the Phillipines, but didn't make it, so she ended up agreeing to human testing with a shady company, which led to her getting exposed to a lab accident which gave her powers.
Isaiah Murphy
That chink is mediocre af. Look at those Chinese girls in Chinese dresses in anime/jp games. They also act and move a unique Chinese way even if its exaggerated. They're the ones who can attract and entertain people. Chinks themselves enjoy them too.
Mutts however are really terrified of criticisms of cultural appropriation, so can't make any fascinating character anymore.
Ryan Martin
Its not like new characters outfits haven't been redesign before.
The only issue nowadays is when a new characters with Marvel, is that when they dont work out the just relaunch them the same as they were before hoping things will change.
Its pretty okay. they will probably turn out better when they aren't stuck in the middle of some shitty marvel event that nobody cared about. each issue had a lot crammed into it.
The characters are really good though, it's easy to find a favorite.
Benjamin Fisher
What did you guys think of the wave of new DC characters that came out not long ago? Do you think any of them have a future now that all of their books have ended? Personally I liked Sideways and Silencer. Damage never really grabbed me so I didn't keep tabs
Amerimutt shit. Never heard of that in east asia. And that page looks fucking terrible.
Juan Murphy
silencer was great. But DC fans are the worst when he comes to new characters. They just want the same thing over and over again.
Jeremiah Morris
Hey I bought every issue of Sideways, Silencer, and Brimstone thank you. Kind have been slacking on Terrifics though. I wanted to encourage the new blood, and was enjoying what I was reading. Kind of weird that Sideways just showed up in Heroes In Crisis for no reason
Joshua Adams
Sideways could have a future, the others not so much.
Zachary Russell
He looks like prime cuckold material when Aero starts hanging out with all those foreign superheros.
Logan Clark
That’s because you’ve never been to asia, I doubt that you’ve even been out of your mothers basement. Spam has been a thing in asia since WWII ended.
Hunter Bennett
>new characters
It was pretty blatant that they were going for creating their Marvel line-up. I liked Silencer, the others were not good.
Andrew Cook
Silencer has a good gimmick and I think is going to appear on ARROW at some point. She's got potential. You act like this is a new thing between the big two
William Butler
Flips and Gooks love the shit. Polynesians in general too guess. In Hawaii (which is just Asia: The State) they eat a thing call a musabi (moo-sa-bee) It's just slabs of sticky rice and spam tied together with seaweed. Somehow they are fucking great
>Sideways. As he is right now, visually, he's too much of a Spider-man knockoff. His personality, while not terrible, but its too bland and undefinable. In order for him to get popular either a) change the outfit or B)Personality fix and tone shift. She-Hulk and Deadpool are examples of characters that benefited from it.
The book is still worth a look just for Rockaforts art.
Lila Rhodes wasn't a well-known character, she appeared in a 5-issue mini nobody read. Most people were unaware she existed until Bendis created Riri and someone started asking why he didn't use Lila instead. Bendis would probably have still created his own OC, but it's likely that he and his editor weren't even aware of Lila, who was herself an OC Donut Steel of DC's Natasha Irons.
Daniel Johnson
He's not all that similar design wise, save the eyes maybe.
Aiden Parker
Im from ea. We don't eat garbage like that. Maybe it's Korean stuff but even if that's the case, it's not a common thing. Never seen them talking about it.
Landon Torres
This is false. Fanboys will whine but a lot of 80s and 90s characters got over because they were treated as big deals from the start and it stuck
Hunter Bennett
>treated as big deals How do you define ' being treated as a big deal'
John Lee
Being important to their respective books and having decent to big roles in big events, in some cases being the focal point of said event. Venom, Cable, Gambit, etc. did not sit in support in the beginning or start small. They were definitely pushed everywhere from debut. Thus, they were 'cool' and relevant and damn near household names only a few years after their creations.
What a character does in their first few months often defines them. If you put them as support or whatever as to not hurt fanboy feelings, they will most likely stay there.
Wyatt Morris
Silencer and Sideways were great, but the others are meh at best. The Unexpected were fucking weird and all over the place, The Terrifics are existing characters so they don’t count, and the Hulk rip-off can die for all I care.
Grayson Jenkins
Wow people really didn’t like Damage. I get it though, you can’t have issue after issue of “Damage vs _____”. Hey maybe they can do a She Damage now that Aaron has alienated She Hulk fans.
Cooper Garcia
I'll be honest, I'm really only familiar with Lila from the Armor Wars mini during Secret Wars
But she was fun in that
Hunter Young
I didn't even know she'd appeared in a second mini until this thread.
Blake Garcia
>China views dating a lot differently But Japan views dating the exact same cake, hell, there's a term for Japanese women who remain unmarried into their later 20's, "Christmas cake," basically saying they're expired and go good anymore.
Christopher Long
It was Secret Wars, so it was an alternate universe version of her
They kinda do but they only do it with select comics and only with thier #1 issues, after that, they just forget about it and move on the next thing. No fucking wonder #1 issues are the only ones that sell decent when that's the only thing they fucking promote and don't bother actually supporting the comics properly. youtube.com/watch?v=JmfKPBmAOQE youtube.com/watch?v=xjUS_YhBoo0
Evan Ross
People has turned lot more impatient too. Is not as if characters started their own solo things and instantly became a thing or appeared once in another comic and they got their own authomatically. Characters appeared in a comic, then in another, then in another, and after years they became secondaries and after years being secondaries they got their own books. Now they expect to throw a new book with a new character or showing a character once and that's it. And fans expect that character they like that appeared once gets his own book.
Is not that is harder to market new characters, is that they try to rush it way too much so doesn't get stuck into people.
Dominic Butler
It's all about stories. Iconic stories create iconic characters, and iconic characters get multimedia, which gets them more iconic stories and so forth and so on.
Evan Edwards
because it's aimed at the Chinese market, don't worry if this was a new character aimed at the west she would be a fat black dyke
Justin Richardson
she looks like good girl esdeath.
Jeremiah Morgan
Well it's understandable why new books are a hard sell to readers. You're basically asking the consumer to invest in floppies in the hopes that they MIGHT like them.
Adrian Ramirez
>Is it harder now than ever trying to market new characters/heroes to the masses?
No. I'd say it's EASIER than ever since the boom of cape movies has created a huge potential audience for capeshit that's not actually aware of any pre-existing comics (since most people who watch superhero movies have never read a superhero comic.
The issue is more that for reasons I won't speculate on here, Marvel and DC both have decided to make characters as unmarketable and shitty as they possibly can.
Jonathan Kelly
why wouldn't they want to make easy money
Andrew Phillips
>moviefags >reading comics user please
Nathan Russell
Aero looks extremely high-class Like a smug ouju-sama
>extremely generic and boring looking bodysuit >but put a transparent jacket on it!
Eh. I guess they tried a little bit, but I'm not feeling it. Replace the bodysuit with a leotard and thighhighs, keep the jacket and let's see what we got.
I can understand Bendis not knowing about her, but isn't it the editors job to know these things?
John Bennett
>isn't it the editors job to know these things?
Yes. Yes it is.
Camden Powell
DC has been pumping out new villains more than heroes. Kind of a let down really.
Brandon Kelly
That's the idea, but Luna needs to get in a lot more comics and /or a cartoon for that to work. An Agents of Atlas cartoon sounds like a it would be a great idea. They could put in Coulson to appeal to MCU and Agents of SHIELD fans
Jack Gray
Well statistically speaking new villains sell better and are far easier to market than heroes. They have the advantage of remaining ambiguous or absent for the majority of the plot, only appearing when they make their move. In fact the only real requirement of a new villain is a cool look, gimmick, and power. Characterization usually comes later. Furthermore, they are arguably easier to write for considering all you need is a simple motive and rarely need a redeemable moment.
Cooper Butler
>I'd say it's EASIER than ever since the boom of cape movies has created a huge potential audience for capeshit that's not actually aware of any pre-existing comics (since most people who watch superhero movies have never read a superhero comic.
There's also social media, everyone can literally gauge how well a new character is received just off of twitter trending page, fan-art, YouTube videos, cosplay etc.
Look at Pokemon every time a new character is released it becomes the number one trending topic on Twitter for the entire day. If Big Two made it their goal to 'break-the-internet' every time a new character was released, comics industry would go through new renaissance.
>If Big Two made it their goal to 'break-the-internet' every time a new character was released, comics industry would go through new renaissance
They kind of try sometimes, but the problemn is that the characters just fucking suck and no one cares about them.
When something DOES go viral, it's usually completely unplanned and they go out of their way to shut it down. For example, Batman's dick. Instead of riding the hype to mass sales (all normies would have bought a comic that has Batman's official cock in it) they hit the panic button and pulled the printing and fucked up everything.
Jordan Evans
There's way more creative freedom with villains than heroes! Heroes have to sell and maintain franchise or series, if a villain sucks they can get killed off.
Caleb Hughes
Not to mention villains have the added benefit of being interchangeable with heroes. For example Solomon Grundy practically works with any hero.
Gavin Allen
>Marvel >editors What year do you think it is?
Even if editors did know, Bendis had enough power to just create his own OC anyway so he could get potential royalties if the MCU uses her.
Seems hard to cosplay, why does Marvel keep depriving us of qts wearing their outfits?
John Russell
Thats true a character like Dr. Doom is used for everyone.
Yeah I forgot the heel-turn factor, if a villain catches on they can be later turned into an anti-hero or hero. Although, it can be tricky at times as some characters are better off staying villains.
>Hard to cosplay Have you seen the shit cosplayers make now? It's this dumb misconception that gives us garbage designs like nu Spider-Woman (Jess) for the sake of "easy cosplaying". Aero isn't even that bad, it's a skintight suit and a clear raincoat.
Juan Powell
Is this Galo Sengen?
Jose Green
storm ripoff
Robert Lewis
>outing yourself as a cosplay noob Laugh at this loser, seagulls
Mason Sullivan
>using thot unironically >toxic masculinity Know how I know you're a fake ally?
Carson Adams
Yes, but the editors have no word in it if Bendis wants to create his own OC character instead of using an already existing one he can't get the royalities out of.
Good thing the other writers who handled Riri weren't selfish and actually improved on her.
Jeremiah Nguyen
How is she in any way a Storm ripoff? She's not a mutant, not black, and doesn't control the weather.
Blake Barnes
Because people care about it a lot less than you think they do.
Grayson Murphy
Controlling air is just a shittier version of weather control.
Owen Gray
No, how?
Tyler Adams
>doesn't even know that Yep, you're part of the problem. At least your cluelessness (pretend or not) is kinda cute.
Jeremiah Roberts
no it isn't
Noah Thompson
The wind wings look pretty cool
Sebastian Miller
Retard
William Green
By your logic then Storm is just a Thor ripoff.
Sebastian Stewart
What color patterns can a wind character have? Silver/white ? Maybe light blue/light green
Daniel Carter
Okay so you're just a dumb powerlevel fag
Robert Taylor
White, Silver, and Blue. So aesthetically Aero's costume makes sense, but unfortunately doesn't pop as much as other hero costumes. Red Tornado has the benefit of his namesake matching his powers and body.
Brayden Hernandez
>Wave looks better there too without the damned armor nonsense
True, also fixing the green lines so theyre more of a wave motif would also help
It's not a question of power levels, it's a question of how many interesting looking things can the character DO with her powers. I read something like "air control" and I'm falling asleep before the second word.
John Robinson
I think armor bits are fine, its just sometimes they're drawn too big in panels than they should be. Here it looks decent .
Kayden Davis
There's arguably a plethora of things you could do with wind powers. Outside of flight and levitating objects, one could literally "knock the wind" out of people by sucking a portion of oxygen out of their lungs thus bringing them to their knees (of course this can be deadly if done wrong). Wind powers are great against fires, can provide a bit of hydrokinesis, and can even help find secret passageways from airflow. Furthermore, you bring up Storm as being more versatile, which is true, but most writers regulate Ororo to shooting lighting.
Joseph Evans
You have to be honest though, this page was pretty kino. If Luna Snow was with them and this shot, it would have been perfect. You rarely superheroes with different elemental powers teaming up.
i'd say tradition but that doesn't mean shit to them anymore. it's truly a wasted opportunity that could even save the industry. there's so much more they could do online that they can't in print, particularly since they have pools of money and talent ready to throw at it. >they could turn every internet connected device into a point of sale their merchandise thereby hugely increasing their potential exposure all without disturbing their core printing business all that much, if not outright propping it up with new readers who want physical formats of their favorite books, more anthologies, collections and omnibuses. >without printing and distribution costs, the price of a single book could become much more accessible to casual readers, fanbois and people who'd never pick up a comic otherwise alike, and be slightly more lucrative for the companies and creators in that respect. >all sorts of crazy shit they could do with panel organization without necessarily being limited to the dimensions of a comic page, not least of which would be making them easier to view on smaller devices and thus more accessible. >comics would no longer necessarily be relegated to still pictures. you could animate panels to any degree you desired, but very little could go a very long way. i'm not suggesting blurring the lines betweens comics and animated shows, but a couple of frames here and there could breathe some life into them with a little movement. lightning could strike and explosions could expand in important panels, make powers glow, etc etc the possibilities are endless really as it's mostly untreaded territory. and it could all happen without much effort and without significantly changing the format, just a couple of extra panels and half the time you could probably get away with a few slight recolorings.
Brandon Myers
>Hawaiian goddess just helping out like nothing Shouldn't that be pretty significant.
Norse Gods and Greek Gods in Marvel Universe get to much work and the other gods are so under-explored is a fucking travesty. Theres so much to that they can go into with -Aztec Gods -Southeast Asain gods -Aborigine Mythology -Inuit myths -Native American myths etc etc
Gabriel Edwards
bad business. keep in mind that disney is a western company trying to sell western media to a very xenophobic nation, culturally speaking.
That stripper horseshit might fly in japan but china would just say that the west are trying to turn their children into degenerate sluts.
Matthew Wright
Volcano themed Polynesian goddess...whats so odd about it?
Josiah Rogers
It's just a synthezoid taking on the name and appearence of Pele...I think
Jacob Bennett
it turned out to not be pele afterall, and was just an atlas robot pretending to be her so that everyone would team up and work together
>Is there any art of Aero that isn't manga-lite? Manga is not an art style
Luke Reyes
Also...oh shit Marvel actually made a new character?
Jack Jackson
Shut the fuck up, you know exactly what the post meant.
Brayden Reyes
Loved both Sideways and while not technically part of New Age of Heroes, New Super-Man was really great. I'd love for Morrison to do a run on Sideways since he could take it in some interesting areas.
Bentley Nguyen
I like the first issue so far. BUt will need to build up on it for her to go forward
Tyler Scott
Capes are oversaturated so obviously it is going to be hard to insert some new cape in there. TWD proved there is a market for other genres. Strategically, I'd recommend more stuff that groups multiple comics together like Shonen Jump or something. Do 5-10 different stories together. This allows you to cycle through unpopular stuff quickly while also allowing you to experiment low risk on multiple things at once. Readers would like it because they can buy one thing and chances are they'll like a couple stories in it.
Nolan Perez
Aero doesnt really get a push because she is kind of outside the current EIC's grasp. She's Marvel Asia. She isn't much of an agenda figurehead outside of Agent of Atlas so she isnt being forced like other characters.
Anthony Allen
I like how they deftly handled a serious magic issue when in other books most magic problems are very difficult for technology based heroes ro handle.
I mean, Ive seen a alot of things shoved up asian assholes but this is the first time ive seen so much pulled out of an asian asshole.
Dominic Rogers
I do like thigh highs
Mason Barnes
>it's a question of how many interesting looking things can the character DO with her powers.
She was only created for the Chinese so when they make a movies based on her they will all go watch it.
Jace Turner
Hotness looks like Guy Fieri and I read that one name as "Cursed Ass"
Ryan Reyes
>everything on that page
And people wonder why comics don't sell anymore.
Juan Ward
>wave >has a W on her chest
I dont get her design at all except for the wetsuit invoking the seas and hers word invoking ancestral bolos. I mean I guess those light fins are for her to swim faster but they dont even look like they should be where they should be.
Just remove the tech parts of her suit and switch the Bolo for a dagger
Ian Cooper
Well, what do yo expect form Young Animals?
Nathaniel White
I like that they use Hercules as a measure of energy. Also, that is a lot of Hercs.
Tyler Hughes
That and she has the stupidest fucking blades I've ever seen
Juan Martinez
You made it worse.
Justin Morgan
Naw, pretty sure it's better.
She should have exposed toes though, to match her fingerless gloves. Toeless thigh-high boots are high fashion.
John Hill
They didn't really think this name through, did they?
No, the exposed skin ruins the streamlined flow of the costume.
Fingerless gloves on the other hand might work.
Jackson Diaz
That's nothing. Remember Iron Heart?
Jose Watson
>Hotness looks like Guy Fieri
They've made jokes about that.
Jose Clark
British chocolate is so good.
Jonathan Harris
I don’t think so. Legacy characters usually suck ass and don’t get good until they develop an identity of their own. I think it just takes a while for a completely new character to gain a respectable following. Most things just take time.
Jonathan Allen
I don't know how much attention they'd want to call to it but a lot of Chinese city planning can be a nightmare.
On the other hand the buildings being able to withstand strong windstorms are a point in their favor.
Easton Diaz
Pic-related is in Hong Kong though, pretty unique case there.
Hudson Bennett
Imagine living in the apartment buildings bordering it, do you bother going in? Are you considered one of them? Eternally an outsider?
Kevin Peterson
In that case, why are they releasing it by individual issues instead of just giving us a tpb/graphic novel format from the start?
Ayden Young
That's definitely not a common one for Americans. The only place I've seen it is in this candy shop that mainly sells international stuff.
Cooper Nguyen
So they can charge you 20 dollars instead of 10
Ian Robinson
bumpo
James Walker
True, team ups and giving them a foothold in the universe can be tremendously impactful. I mean didn’t MJ get her own solo as a result of being a Spiderman supporting character?
Brandon Ramirez
then there are the ghost cities
Julian King
That shit is eerie
Ethan Gomez
I don’t know much about Korea or the Philippines but East Asians like Chinese despise that shit
Owen Phillips
So are there any trades out yet I can read featuring the new characters like Aero and Sword master yet? Or do I have to wait a couple of months for the stories to get collected? What about the other characters they are teaming up with?
Brayden Gutierrez
You can read Agents of Atlas War of whatever. But that didn't really give a lot of individual focus to people not named Cho
Robert Hernandez
“market"
There's your fucking problem OP.
Consider any other fucked off artists "why aren't people buying my artwork I tell them in so many different ways to buy?"
If you think you can sell your faggoy shit creation you dreamt up in college during a lonely bender of cheetos, porn and whiskey Think again.
Good art stands on it own. You don't need to convince people to buy your art beyond showing them.
Which is why you write comics that you believe in. And even if public reception sucks now, who's to say some budding PhD in comics 200 years down the road won't dig up your series and declare it a timeless masterpiece.
But never mind that, I got into comics to get rich And fuck hot bitches. Thats why I'm such a fucking Cuck
Joseph Roberts
Hell yes, at least on the Filipino side of things.
Aiden Ortiz
Any of the places occupied by American forces in the 40's-50's are all about Spam. Other places, not so much.
It's a weird cultural holdover of imperialism thing.
Gabriel Morales
For whatever reason I thought of this when looking at Aero
>those pathetic names This is what happens when half of your business consists in trademarking basic wordplays and do that for decades and decades to no end.
Aaron Brown
Wow way to be so insensitive towards little people, you bigot
Ian Ramirez
wow dude you just DESTROYED the entire concept of marketing
Jonathan Harris
Chink here, yeah SPAM is love. SPAM is life.
David Lee
Yes, it mostly had to do when American Soldiers occupying countries like Korea and Philippines had only things to eat like Spam and the locals learned to like it.
John Rodriguez
>That one hentai where the midget actually looked like a midget instead of just a little girl "who's totally 21 guys, lmao" It's pretty good
Yeah there’s a lot of bullshit like that in comics
Nathaniel Ortiz
>bought Aero's first issue >beautiful girl, beautiful artwork, beautiful storytelling >halfway through they add some new phillycheese heroine and the art gets worse
Aero should only be drawn by Chinese people because they ruined her
Carson Lewis
hotness looks like he stepped out of year 1999
Asher Garcia
Honestly OP I think you hit the nail on the head. Most people don't care about new characters, least of all the writers. Hell, how many heroes or villains can you think of that were hyped up for months and then faded into obscurity in a couple issues?
I think legacy characters are the only way to get new blood noticed by readers in a meaningful way.
Levi Collins
Star Wars didn't have this problem. You could take any chucklefuck background character or OC and make them a superhero in the old EU.
Josiah Collins
>#1 Comics sell the most, so people are willing to try new things.but they cant get people to stay
While people attention spans are getting shorter cape stories becoming more decompressed
Isaac Thompson
>in a meaningful way. ?
Zachary Hernandez
>You could take any chucklefuck background character or OC and make them a superhero That's how it worked for Wolverine
Not true. She’s slated to appear in either Spider-Verse 2 or that live action Silk solo Sony wants. Get your Cindy keys now, because they’ll skyrocket like Gwen’s did
Michael Wood
This is how a lot of characters came to be, so it could oild maybe still happen.
Gavin Stewart
Its ironic that first issues sell the most but original IPs are promoted the least
