So? I thought the rule of thumb for cartoons set in the real world is "it's current year"

damn where has the time gone?

lol wasn't she kicked off the show?

>Cartoon set in a era that existed
Major shock

so it takes place when i was 12, meaning the show is meant for millennial?

>Literally one cartoon is being set in the 2000s

Most cartoons are set a decade or two before the present day. Have you ever seen a cartoon with present day technology? It's always old shit from 10+ years ago. Nothing special.

I'm pretty sure cartoons released DURING the 00s were set IN the 00s, dumbass, this isn't a recent development.

Reggie playing Super Smash Bros Melee WHEN

Man, I can't wait for Metal Gear Solid 2

But the 2000s were a cultural wasteland. 9/11 and bad CGI killed movies. Pop killed music. Horrific management killed cartoons. And tech was in that awkward DSL phase where we generally knew where shit was going but we had the shittiest versions of what it would be.

I unironically liked the 2010's more than the 2000's.

Except for gaming, but that was basically PC, GBA, and PS2 carrying the decade hard.

nah, 2000's were good. 2010's got off to a bad start but got better as time went on.

still better than this decade

All that shit's late 90s/early 2000s. 2004 was the start of the descent into what would eventually be the TV animation dark age which was in full force by late 2007.

You seem to have lost your marbles.
Oh, wait, I found them, they’re mine now cause I’m much better at marbles than you!

Just cause exhentai died doesn't mean you can write off an entire decade.

shows that started in the extremely late 90's and had the majority of their runtime throughout the 2000's count as 2000's shows. and things didn't get really bad until like 2009.

>things didn't get really bad until like 2009.
Nah, things were full blown bad by 2007. Things finally started to get good again by 2010 though so the worst of it was probably in 2009. Also, I don't count years old reruns as a show helping to define a decade.

how did things get bad in 2007? CN real started in 2009 which really symbolized how shitty things were getting. and besides, 2007 is still more than half of the 2000's.

Who the fuck care about the early 00's? We haven't even gotten to the 90's phase yet because faggot boomers are still stuck in the 80's. Why set a cartoon in the most boring decade. Is there gonna be Matrix slow motion parodies, frosted tips, and AOL references? I mean come on. Can't wait for them to the main characters get upset when a certain someone doesn't accept their friend request on Myspace.

Oh yeah well my cartoon is set in the early 90s.

That'd be a nice way to make the setting feel alive and is definitely not going to happen. The early 2000's were a weird time for American culture. The passage of the Patriot Act, the wars in Iraq and Iran, the launch of Yea Forums itself, it's all stuff that touches our lives to this day and deserves more exploration than it has gotten anywhere.

It'd be nice to see a bit more unpacking of what those years really were, but in this case, the setting's just going to be flavor and nostalgia, and will lack any real mention or portrayal of what those years meant.

2000s was the last good decade of pop culture. You still got content that was genuine and sincere free from the influence of the internet. For the most part people still made what they really wanted without wanting to impress any groups?

I really really don't want the Y2k fashion to come back. That's all.

Attached: ZETUS LAPETUS YOU FUKIN CUNT.jpg (1077x579, 60K)

No, Julia Vickerman was. Shadi replaced her.

The DS has an infinitely better library than the GBA.

>I really really don't want the Y2k fashion to come back. That's all.

But it will user, much like how some fashion from the 50's reappeared in the 80's, or how the 80's came back in the 2010's. It'll happen.

Early 2000's are before social media. It's just like putting something in the early 90's so you have an excuse for no one to have a mobile phone.

the only early adventure time in the 2000s was the pilot

The show tricked me into thinking it started in 2009 because I can distinctly remember LSP saying "whatever it's 2009"

I'm so fucking sick of 80s nostalgia. People were making fun of family guy in the early 00s for overdoing it, and it's STILL fucking everywhere. It's been 20 fucking years of jerking off different parts of the 80s, holy fucking shit just let it go. The 80s idolized the 50s, the 90s idolized the 60s, and ever since we've just been stuck slamming 80s cock down our throats. The decade is over. Move on.

>why does a hyper consumerist society idolize the decade known for the rapid rise of consumerism?

Bitch-ass motherfucker I never questioned why, I'm just fucking sick of it.

>No centralized internet
>No smartphones
>No social media
>No politics overtaking every aspect of life (yes, not even 9/11 managed to cause this much butthurt)
>People were interested in watching something other than capeshit
>No minimalism, designs with actual effort put into them
>The internet had more freedom and wasn't confined to 5 big websites
Anyone who thinks the 2010s are better than the 2000s is a fag in my eyes.

>Zero modern technology.
>Set in the 2000s.
.... So, that computer, cellphone, MP3 player, TV/Sound System, and other gadgets I had were merely pretending?

>But the 2000s were a cultural wasteland.

When Yea Forums was made, most of its waifus were from 00s cartoons. Tech was fine, it was just not so centralized and you had to actually search past 2 pages of Google to find something. It was sufficiently complicated that average people couldn't get into it, which made it an incredible form of escapism - today it's the opposite, people want to escape from smartphone twitter garbage, and hook up with people who think there are more important things than having the most hits on Instagram.

Plus you had rampant anti-militarism due to the War on Terror for the Oil, Flash made cartoons, Europe actually mattered, anime was at the phase where only the geeks and nerds watched it, and you had a bunch of hilariously bad anime-inspired western works. Goth girls who dressed from Hot Pockets were a thing, there was even Suicide Girls. And it was hilarious that you could put password stealers into Myspace, we traded password lists on IRC to see who can get the most.

Music always has its ups and downs and you probably just listened to crap cause there was a lot of great stuff from the 00s. You say "pop killed music" but all I remember from the 00s is mostly metal getting popular (Rammstein, Dream Theater, Nightwish, Powerman 5000, even shit like Linkin Park counts technically).

And as far as cartoons go, by today good writing has been thrown out and people just try putting in as many references to memes they can cause that makes their writing "smart". A decade ago, they actually had to have good writing for real.

>The 80s idolized the 50s, the 90s idolized the 60s, and ever since we've just been stuck slamming 80s cock down our throats. The decade is over. Move on.

I'm gonna be on the fucking moon once we start idolizing 90s cartoons. Can't wait for us to have more stuff like Real Adventures of Johnny Quest or Freakazoid or motherfucking Swat Kats. Hell maybe we'll finally get that Johnny Bravo movie made!

Attached: bravo movie.jpg (600x917, 79K)

>The 80s idolized the 50s, the 90s idolized the 60s
lol no, the 80's and 90's were an era where people looked toward the future in every possible ways. It was an era of trial and errors, not a "wow the past was so greaaaat like the 00's to these days time.

The 90s were almost 20 years ago

Attached: wwj_extras.jpg (640x718, 91K)

00s was more like "everything sucks", it was a depressive time in general. It's why escapism was so popular. There were so many online communities with people numbering in the hundred of active users at most. Today it's just two or three social media sites and no one actually chats with other people about life, it's just a narcissistic clickfest of getting more likes.

It's the 2010s that is more nostalgia based, with all the bullshit remakes and reinventing of old properties, and putting references into fucking everything.

How is that even relevant? Both the GBA and DS were from the 2000's. The 3DS was announced in 2010.

N'ah. Listen you fucking zoomers, the early 2000's were absolutely phenomenal and a wonderful time to be a teenager. Music was phenomenal, movies weren't the braindead CGI cape trash, video games were actually fun to play, TV was still fun, and the internet was the wild fucking west, and people weren't glued to fucking technology 24/7 and you'd still have real conversations with people. Comics and cartoons were enjoyable as well and Toonami/Adult Swim hadn't shit the bed either.

I could name about 100 cartoons with examples of futuristic technology

you confirm the point, that list is dreadful. neard shit people pretend to like because hollywood spilled billions on the marketing overnight, animaymay, remake, harry potter, all trash devoid of artistic relevance

You got this.

The 2000's was fucking awful in every regard. Music, movies, shows, cartoons. There are SOME nuggets of good stuff there from respective category as has been pointed out but you could easily pick better stuff from both the 90's and the 2010's.
People who unironically like the 2000's are selectively cheery picking from it while ignoring the endless amounts of garbage. Of course you don't remember the shit, your brain only wants to remember the good stuff.

if that nostalgia dogma always existed, kids in the 80's would have been listening to 1950's music to feel hip over their parents. think about it a minute.

It's ok, user. We'll get through this somehow.[/spoiler

Serial Experiments Lain takes place in the present day, present time, even though it was made twenty years ago.

I shouldn't have laughed at this. I'm sorry.

came here to post this

Also F is for Family is pretty good, set in the 70's and is Yea Forums related.

They did, it was the 90's. Every decade people are nostalgic over the decade that was 20 years ago. In the 90's it was the 70's that people obsessed over. In the 2000 (tail end of it at least) we had 80's revival with neon shit in shows, vaporwave becoming a thing. In the 2010 it WAS the 90's which was the current glorification, see every CN show during the 2010 and you'll see shit tons of 90's references and how every show needed at least one Sailor Moon transformation.
We are now entering an era in which we will see the 2000's resurfacing. I am expecting that we will only the aesthetics from the 2000's with additional cherry picking of the far and few inbetween moments of goodness.

>Of course you don't remember the shit, your brain only wants to remember the good stuff.
No shit, fuckwit. Everyone does this. Boomers don't talk about the Manson family or Vietnam going fubar when reminiscing on the good old days.

Wasn’t that the creator?

Pre-9/11 2000s were a fun time. The show is going for that comfy My Twisted World vibe.

Nostalgia for EARLY 00S things like skater punk and Shrek already peaked on the internet back around 2015-2018, with the 90s nostalgia peaking on the internet around 2008-2015.

Now in 2018-2019 the internet has moved onto LATE 00s-early 10s zoomer nostalgia like Minecraft, Cool Math games, iCarly and Party rock anthem.

Nostalgia moves quite fast on the internet where it's already at 2012, compared to real life where it's still stuck on le 80s.

Attached: 1552794149084.png (1101x1211, 794K)

>LE EVERYTHING TURNED TO SHIT IN 2007 MEME

You're only saying that because you got older by then and media stopped targeting you. Zoomers younger than you think post-2007 was a wistful time.

Attached: 1558838579033.png (739x387, 175K)

On the internet much of the 2010s was spent idolizing the 90s (Buzzfeed, Facebook, and 9gag kept mentioning the 90s in 2012, to the point of self-parody).

But in real life the 2010s seemed more focused on the 80s (Stranger things, Ready player one) with some 90s reboots, but not as pungent as the 80s obsession.

Billy and mandy was overrated and relied too much on booger/fart shit humor

Kids next door was cringe to me with the really lame humor and characters screaming constantly

The others are good

bump

Nigga the 80s and 90s had so much media referencing the 50s and 60s respectively it'd make your head spin if you really tried to keep track of it

It's more like every 30 years, unless the decade was shitty. The 80's had a huge boner for the 50s and saw tons of 50s-esque bands emerge along with films like Back to the Future capitalizing on the nostalgia. 90s was all about the 60s, you're probably getting the 60s and 70s confused because hippy shit was almost entirely from the 60s, and only gets associated with the 70s due to some minor carryover.

I constantly see this image get posted, but it's just some shitty unsourced collage. Phineas and Ferb and Minecraft get nostalgia yeah, but even Millennials liked those when they came out. I feel like you're some samefag spamming this image.

Alright I’ll bite. Why?

trends go in circles, as you should know and the proccess actually takes 20 years.

>10 years ago: old news and lame
>20 years ago: Super nostalgic and back in style

>mp3 players with storage space measured in MB.
>Windows 98/2000/ME era computers
>Brick phones with a 32x32 pixel black and white screen
>Huge hulking CRTs that weigh more than the five people it takes to carry one into your house
You'd have to be pretending to consider any of those modern by today's standards.

What do you mean almost? 19 years ago was already 00s. You need to go back 20 years to reach 90s.

>Nostalgia moves quite fast on the internet where it's already at 2012
By that sense Gangnam Style is now "nostalgic".

Joking aside time in the way we generally conceive of it today (regimented into hours, quarter hours, time zones and all of that) is a fairly modern invention being necessitated by the shipping and rail needs of the Industrial Revolution.

There is a small scene of new nu metal bands but since rock in general has withered they have little exposure.

Even artsy foreign movies were memorable and talked-about:

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Amelie
City of God
Pan’s Labyrinth
Downfall
Oldboy
Let the Right One In

Guys strap in. The 2000s are the new 90s. The 90s are the new 80s and the 80s might as fucking well be the 60s.

That was kind of a weird thing because most of that 90s obsession was very specific and mostly centered around 90s Nick. The 80's obsession has been going strong since the late 00s, with 90s nostalgia being much more niche in its placement within modern pop culture.

Also how fucking obnoxious was an episode of Stranger Things coming to a grinding halt just so two kids could sing the Neverending Story theme?

The nostalgia trends aren't really set in stone, there was a ton of 70s throwbacks, particularly in music and fashion, during the 90s. The 70s throwbacks reached their peak around '97-'05. People forget that revivals of punk and goth were 70s throwbacks.

I admit, i'm on an 80s nostalgia ride myself and i wasn't even born in the decade.

They aren’t set then is the point.

2006 is the late 2000s.

Mid 2000s was the last of the good times, my dude.

Yes. That's how the passage of time works.

We Bare Bears very aggressively takes place in current year

I'd rather not. And I say this as a nu-metal fan

10 years ago was minecraft though

Hippie shit is tied into Vietnam though. And Vietnam lasted until '75

Fuck 2000's design philosophies.
Everything looks cheap and has this "melted bar of soap" styling.

Hippie movement imploded in 1969 due to an influx of teens that got into it just looking for cheap drugs, which as partially responsible for the huge surge in drug use in the early 70s. Hippie stuff in the first half of the decade was basically a zombie movement that was mostly just people wearing hippie clothes and calling themselves hippies, but not actually being against the war. It wasn't too dissimilar to the "I'm SUCH a nerd" trend from a few years back. Also stuff like psychedelia, which the 90s really liked to focus on, was far less prevalent in the early 70s compared to the late 60s.

The 80s obsession has persisted for a while, reaching its peak in the 2000s and 2010s, but I remember the 80s being cosnidering endearingly cheesy rather than lame before then, and going into the 2020s we actually seem to be getting MORE techno music and 80s throwbacks, with the 90s and early 00s only gradually carving out a small space even as 80s nostagia and popular culture grows.

I think 80s was perhaps peak American Consumer culture. It was cheap and crass at times, but very true to itself and willing to just stand up and say "I think these dumb things and weird concepts are cool". Earnestness and unironic self-expression haven't been in vogue for any long stretch thereafter, so the 80s hold hasn't been usurped. The 90s were a snide rejection of the optimistic creativity and earnest consumerism of the 80s, the 2000s were an exploration of WHY those things were bad, and the 2010s were mostly wistful looks back at the 80s and sly, winking references to things from that era.

Each decade had some originality, but I don't feel like any decade since has really tried to embrace an identity or a vision of the present and future that doesn't rely upon "referencing" the past in a deliberate and conspicuous way.

Except it wasn’t.

>The 90s were a snide rejection of the optimistic creativity and earnest consumerism of the 80s,
That's not at all true.
If anything, the 90's is when consumerism peaked in earnest.
2000's is when cynicism came into popularity, thanks in part to meaningless wars and vapid luxuries popularized by huge corporations like Apple, celebrity sell-outs and the like.
2010's are post-cynicism, but as there are no great artists to lead the way due to useless arts programs in universities, it's become a dour time of reflection and retrophilia.
2020's are going to be a time of rebuilding the talent pool in the hopes that the 2030's will have something worth celebrating.

None of it's changed though. Wow, they hold more memory and got faster.

>2000 was 20 years ago

The death of CN was the Boston bomb scare for the ATHF movie.
The death of videogames was roughly coincidental with the second Xbox 360 UI.

That's because Zoomers are fucking retarded. Everything got worse in 2007/2008.

Aside from the DS Lite and Phineas and Ferb everything in the bottom image sucks.

Windows is still the same operating system since NT, just with a new coat of paint and more spying daemons.

The only difference between 2000 and 2010 in terms of technology is that companies now know the value of the data they've been modifying and transmitting all along and want to collect and sell it.
I guess that and tactile feedback is apparently not as important as a flexible UI, so all user input is slower because touch screens are still shitty.
