Well I mean it is true that children from dysfunctional/neglectful homes have to grow up a lot faster than normal. My dad was basically raised by his brothers because their dad (my grandpa) died when he was a toddler.
Almost nobody makes cartoons with kids acting like kids, no one could put up with this shit. They're always either teenagers (but even this usually is toned down) or college kids mentally.
Bill Oakley said on the DVD commentary for this episode that it's always been a problem that the show lacks teen/20-something characters they can do dating stories with.
