The first one had the problem of being too real. The original Lion King was more cartoony and allowed for more emotional expression while the realistic lions in the new one didn't convey the same emotional weight as the original.
The last two had the problem of modifying the story and premise just enough to appeal to modern sentiments rather than concentrating on making a story that is fun, entertaining, and family friendly.
That doesn't mean that the movies wouldn't make money but they won't be timeless like the originals.
