Can someone explain why rape is so prevalent in comics? I mean its played so much for shock that it feels like a gag at this point.
Can someone explain why rape is so prevalent in comics...
Gagging can be involved, yes
easy drama
It's not just comics, it's Western media in general. People love rape.
>Why is rape so prevalent in comics?
Because its fucking fiction and there is more rape in history/real life than there is in comics so it only makes sense something some common would appear in comics.
I dont know what you talk about, often in comics it's not put in, and most often when you see it, it's just shock value and not to portray the person a certain way
Rape as a plot point or character trait is just the sign of shit writers that get worked up about such obvious symbolism and the emotional threads that go with it.
on top of this new crop of milquetoast cityslickers that write for comics amd fucking women that act like rape is the worst thing ever.
I mean, on average, 50% people involved enjoy it.
It's easy conflict, drama, and obstacle for female characters to overcome. However its often poorly executed and feels cheap. See rape CAN be used in narrative as a psychological trauma where a heroine overcomes it and becomes stronger, but instead it's usually just "I was raped" and milked as somehow giving the character depth. Actually the only rape that I can think of in the Big 2 right now is Doctor Light and that mind erase shit
>muh realism
There are a lot of things that are far more common then rape yet may not be seen much in fiction.
>it feels like a gag at this point.
The Hulk has been canonically raped multiple times and at least one actually was played for dark comedy
Cost effectiveness.
So what's the end game of calling men incels? To have them make women into noncels?
>Can someone explain why rape is so prevalent in comics?
It isn't. There are quite a few examples, but the numbers of comics that do include it aren't a drop in the bucket compared to comics as a whole.
would Yea Forums enjoy being raped?
It's one of the worst things you can do to someone, but still have them present in the story
Torture doesn't work, especially in cape comics--a level of pain is expected when all you do is punch people
It has to be emotional and psychological, but most abuse like that is over a period of time. You really can't SHOCK the viewers unless there's a specific action you can link to the abuse
Rape is
1. a single action
2. doesn't kill off a character
3. is emotionally, psychologically harmful to anyone who witnesses it
So naturally, people throw it in to a bunch of stuff to create drama
This is a bad argument because
source ?
Comics have a bee in their bonnet about being considered "for children" and so they do whatever edgy shit they can to try and childishly demonstrate their maturity. Rape's a pretty obvious choice for that.
Give them a hot girl and they'd say yes
Rape is an easy way to crowbar drama and/or tits into your story. Most comic book writers are lazy hacks, and the ones who aren't are mostly edgy fucks (eg Moore). Hence lots of rape.
Also
Frankie is a slut, I bet she loved every second of being dicked by George Costanza
what if it is an ugly bastard who knows how to use his dick to make you cum (even if you don't want to)?
Well...it does what it says.
Rape has actually gone down in the big 2 (especially Marvel).
They even retconned Mockingbird being raped to just having an affair.
>its played so much for shock
Yes...for shock. Definitely not their kink or anything.
Because it's an easy way to bring out shock without actually having to kill someone.
Someone please post the edit
>why rape is so prevalent in comics
It's not. Stop searching for rape doujins just to find something to bitch about.
Because it makes my penis erect
No shrinkage this time.
>would Yea Forums enjoy being raped?
In one word: Bueno.
>bueno2
Got any rare ones?
The batman at the top is a bueno, it just have a borked thumbnail.
My require some editing
Eeeh, it's not a real bueno without the speech buble.
I like it
Noice, one I didn't have. Here's a r63 Bueno. I guess that would be a Buena.
Aside from what's already been mentioned, RLM discussed this when talking about trashy B Movies. Rape is also a cheap, uncreative way to get any kind of sexual titillation into a story. You don't need to build up any relationships, you don't need to justify it happening, some dude just assaults or tries to assault a chick and instant excuse for nudity and sex. It's also a way to get around the idea that people who want to have sex and perhaps want it too much or agree to it too readily, are Bad People. Rapists are bad people, so no problems there. The guys doing it in your story are meant to be bad guys anyway. And the women are being forced into it, so it's not like they're sluts or anything. Getting around the problem of rape being titillating to the audience was the whole point of the Xenomorph in the original alien and it facehumping a dude. It didn't exactly work long term, but it was a very effective choice at the time.
It's also a super cheap way to make someone bad. What did they do to make Dr. Light a despicable villain again? They changed his super power to rape. Instantly made him a threat you weren't laughing at. The principle remains the same across all examples: rape is super bad and thus the people who do it are super bad. Just like Nazis, it's an easy way to make a villain that the heroes don't need to feel bad about beating up, or even killing, without a second though.
As an aside, this happens a lot in Japanese manga and anime too. And not just porn. There's countless terrible revenge porn stories where the villains not just rape, but have whole rape factories, just to make it clear they're super evil. That said, there's countless terrible manga where it's also just straight forward fap bait done by the protagonist, so whatever.
>Anal
how cultured.
Every single person in the world shits. How come there is a deluge of comics detailing dumps Wolverine's taken?
does his ass go snikt as the turd comes out
>It's also a super cheap way to make someone bad.
On the flip side it seems like something for an instant antihero.
The Rapeman is no antihero, he's a role model to children everywhere
A lot of people fantasize about it. gets it.
I had an idea for my story where a villain desperately wanted to have some kind of an excuse to commit crimes and atrocities, so he stole a time travelling device, went to his childhood and raped himself as a child to give himself a trauma and thus, an excuse. I haven't thought about it in years, but now that your bring rape up, would this be a good gag?
It's retard, we all know artists like do retard thing like drawing penis on girls.
it's all yours
No see, the anti-hero can't actually rape. It's one of those things anti-heroes can't do, at least in most stories. The appeal of the anti-hero is rooted in doing things most people consider unethical or not fit for civilized society, but consider understandable in the situations the anti-hero finds himself in. Something like rape is one of those unethical actions an anti-hero can't do, because it doesn't conform to the nature of anti-heroes doing bad things for good reasons. Like child killing, though even then, stories can find ways to make child killing seem more reasonable than rape. In both cases, though, it's considered more something the anti-hero did in the past they must atone for to even be an anti-hero, not something that makes them an anti-hero in the first place.
Like Thomas Covenant or something. The Black Company does feature something like this, though even in that case, the actual anti-hero narrator doesn't participate in it or condone it. The companies soldiers interrupt the gang rape of a little girl, and later in the story an unknown amount of them participate in the rape of female soldiers they captured. And all the narrator does in that case is look the other way and justify it by saying "what the fuck did these women expect when they went into battle?" It's not really something you see in comics, even the grimmest, grittiest ones.
