I rewatched pic related again. It's aged really fucking well. Disney really animated these straight to TV movies really well in the late 90's and 2000s. Sure a good chunk of the story doesnt make sense in relation to the first movie, but it's a comedy first off. The animation, songs are still quality goods compared to today's standard for TV.
No, the only way that happens is if kids start going to them. I dont know why 2D animation has fallen so out of favor with kids in the west today? Is it a parents thing?
Jackson Clark
I've given up on Disney movies for a while, but I think some of their Disney channel cartoons are fun. Film as an industry just seems stagnant these days.
Joseph Thomas
I loved those, yet I haven't thought about them since I last played them. Gonna find them on Youtube.
Easton Perez
I blame the foreigners (mainly chinese). They eat up the blandest shit. I enjoy marvel movies from time to time but I cant get into them so hard. The chinese and foreigners go nutso about them. I hope this mcu fad doesnt go on for like 20 more years.
Brody Sanchez
I'm not sure if it's necessarily the kids or big studios not wanting to give money to cheaper 2D movies over more expensive 3D movies.
Landon Sanders
>japan >knowing anything about character animation
What do you mean? I'm saying that if we want 2D animation to come back, companies need to see it as profitable as in people going to see them.
Sebastian Ward
>I hope this mcu fad doesnt go on for like 20 more years. Oh, don’t worry, it won’t. It’ll last for 50+ years.
>They eat up the blandest shit. It’s because they live in a totalitarian regime that forces them to consume shit, government-approved entertainment that these Marvel movies are the only relief. Their only entertainment is period dramas that wank-off to how amazing and perfect the Chinese culture and history is.
Joseph Phillips
Movies are just too bloated anymore. The more money behind the project, the less creative freedom. So you have to go further down the totem pole to find anything new.
Yes, and if they can do something like that dance then they can definitely animate dynamic facial expressions. Keep in mind that there's currently a lack of 2D animation talent in America because everybody is only trained to do 3D animation now and that dance was done literally this year.
Henry Martinez
I watched this and the original, but not Simba's Pride, how does that film stack up?
Josiah Thompson
There's plenty of talented 2D animators, but they mostly do independent work or freelance for television since studios don't make 2d movies anymore.
You lost me with “doesn’t make sense”. Not sure what the hell youre talking about
Kevin Thomas
>muh Laika They got complacent releasing shit like Missing Link.
Luke Perry
The problem of animated movies nowadays is the stories are mostly generic and playing safe cards for pleasing family and kids market. When you see those souless minions movies can still make big cashes comparing to ground breaking production like Spider-verse, how to encourage the industry to invest and make more innovative movies.
Ethan Cook
>Timon and Pumba see Simba's ceremony at pride rock >the next morning they hear "I just cant wait to be king" even though Simba is aged considerably between the ceremony and that song.
Adam Stewart
How many of these are there compared to obvious cel-shaded 3D animation like in Rick & Morty or BoJack Horseman? If you compare it to Japan, there's obviously a lack of good animators in Western cartoons.
aren't these kinds of shots in anime rotoscoped? Also RIP
Thomas Adams
Is James Baxter working on any long-term projects? I just see his work appear as a beautiful cameo every now and then before disappearing again.
Joshua Evans
I don't know about the Hibike! Euphonium shot but I know Chika's dance is. How do you know Disney's animation isn't though? Wasn't Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs rotoscoped?
Nathan Cruz
Most western TV studios won't animate in house because of unions, costs, and production pipelines. Any 2D animators are stuck doing pencil tests, commercials, or personal projects. A lot of great animators are even storyboard artists who try to sneak in fluid animation.
It's a cycle. I have a 9yo son and, short of anime movies and tv cartoons, there's just basically no 2D movies in cinemas. All the movies made for him are CG. They can say "that's what children want to watch" but, really, that's all they're giving children to watch. So his taste is now geared to CG because that's all there is and studios make more CG because that's all he watches. It's a snowball effect.
So now, even if we try watching old 2D movies with him he doesn't like them because his tastes are geared towards CG by the media he and ALL HIS FRIENDS consume.
Doesn't that just mean that if any American animation studio wanted to produce a 2D animated film, they would still rather just outsource it to Asia? That's just basically the same as asking Japan for help.
Laika is literal schlock garbage. They can't tell a story to save their lives.
Easton Anderson
I believe he’s at Netflix.
Isaiah Adams
Nah, it's usually Korea or Canada that's used for outsourcing. It'd be nice if japan was used more often, I'd love to see more stuff like Scooby Doo on Zombie Island. But if a studio really wanted to do a 2D again, they'd probably do a lot of it in house because directors have to be in constant communication with the team when it comes to something of that scale, or else you end up with the animation quality of those new DC animated films.
As bad as the direct-to-video Disney sequels were for both animation and in general, not all of them were bad. Pic related has fuckall to do with Cinderella, but it's a fun as fuck watch. I also remember Tarzan 2 being a fun watch as well.
>Canada Seriously? Do you mean using stuff like Flash or ToonBoom or hand drawn 2D animation? Because I have not yet found a single job posting in Canada that does traditional.
Mason Lewis
I had TLK 1 1/2 on vhs
Austin Cruz
Pumbaa is great. Sabella's voiced him since the start and is my favorite from the Lion King, especially in the show.
Am I glad I kept the DVD. I had forgotten how thorough the special features/games were on these. 'Who wants to be King of the Jungle' and the Rutt and Tuke Commentary tracks were my favorites.
Chase Price
I loved that
Jaxon Morris
I think the biggest blow to Western animation is that all the old animation veterans are working on their own thing rather than in studios, so less younger animators will come into contact and learn from them.
In that way I do think Japan has an advantage.
Connor Rogers
This is great.
Henry Morgan
soulless cringe
Jaxon Reyes
Peak Disney shits all over anime.
Oliver Baker
>Disney really animated these straight to TV movies really well in the late 90's and 2000s Something tells me you haven't seen Return of Jafar.
Parker Smith
Maybe if Frozen had remained 2D animated, it might have revived the medium. We'll never know.
Christopher Ramirez
user, don't jinx it. They might make this movie live-action too.
