Due to a filing error in heaven, Ash got turned into a girl and Emily got two years of her life rewound, and they got stuck with the angel who had caused this (and then his brother and then ex-girlfriend), searching for a way to fix it without being noticed (because they'd just get their memories erased and stay the way they are). In the time they spent around each other they fell in love and became a couple, although they've been keeping up the pretense that they aren't lesbians and Ash is going out with the angel.

This complicates matters a bit, because Emily, though supportive, is actually fine with her retconned life, which is turning out to be much better, not to mention she's likely dead in a car accident in the original timeline, plus she loves Ash and all. Ash's life is also better in many respects but she won't really acknowledge it (yet?) because she hates being a girl. Emily's destroyed the pages describing her missing years but if Ash gets refiled the way the system works means they'll likely forget each other, plus she technically fell in love with girl-Ash, not an hypothetical boy-Ash she's never seen.

Anyway, on the angel side there also was a murder-mystery-conspiracy which doubled as a struggle for the control of the universe, which they solved a couple pages ago by killing the avenging angel behind it all despite being a group of nobodies.

So now they're in heaven, in the file depot, unsupervised, and finally have the opportunity to "fix" Ash's gender, and Ash has a choice between staying a super hot girl in a happy relationship and a good social circle, but a girl, or possibly throwing away everything to become a boy again. Note that a deus ex machina is still very possible at that stage, them being in heaven and all.

I kinda expected them to pull the "Ash has always been a girl and the misfile just gave her memories of being a boy" card (because technically we only have the word of the incompetent angel that she ever was a boy) but the power of love is a nice idea too. And I guess there's still room for that twist.
