Sonic tried to keep consistency at the beginning. Adventure was basically years going by after the classics and had established lore that played into events for future games. Mario was never consistent from the start.

Now we have "Sonic's World" and the "Human World being split" and Classic Sonic taking place in another dimension and certain games being canon and not canon depending on the game.

Obviously that's highly incongruent with the world SatAM setup and Archie ran with, but there was just no winning for Archie having to consolidate their fully-developed world with a story that simply wouldn't work with it.

Setting-wise, Unleashed was perfect and its artstyle was the perfect way to implement humans without having them clash with the cartoon animals and scientist.

Having a Wispon that could switch on the fly would have made Force's OC gameplay way more interesting.

Eggman clashes with the Unleashed humans because they have completely different proportions to Eggman, who has giant hands and feet like the humans in SA2 and Shadow. They are the way to go, just make the faces a bit more stylized.
