I never disputed that the music and animation are high quality but those are the only two elements I can ever come back to the little mermaid for. That film just has way too much bullshit carried over from the other princess fairy tale Disney films for me to watch on repeat and if I do I need to be in the right mood for that movie. whereas I can rewatch Aladdin, Lion King and Beauty and the Beast anytime and still enjoy them. Hell, Beauty and the Beast is the exact same fairy tale romance setting that Disney has used for it's other classic films and did it miles better than any of them and I can't absolutely stand that type of shit from Disney films which says alot about beauty and the beast.

Years later it's kind of amazing to me that Scar gets fucking eaten alive at the end of the movie. That's brutal. That's arguably the most brutal Disney death of them all.

How is TLM's writing worse than any of the other three? The point of the story was that love can happen despite them being from different worlds. The point of Beauty and the Beast was that love can happen despite their physical appearance. The point of Aladdin was that love can happen despite their social standing. The only story that stands out really is The Lion King, and that's only because its story isn't solely focused on romance but rather a coming of age story.

My biggest problem with the little mermaid like every classic disney movie is that female protagonist falls in love with a hot male character who is for all intents and purposes a cardboard cutout and serves nothing to the plot other than to save the day at the end. What makes the little mermaid more egregious to me is that she just essentially fucks her family and loved ones over for such a bullshit selfish reason, it would be one thing if she simply wanted to explore a different world from her underwater world but the movie just throws away that motivation in favor of wanting to just get some laid with some random dude he barely even met. I'm annoyed that Be Prepared was shortened/cut/whatever. I guess they wanted the avoid the nazi imagery? Really disappointed about that, I feel like setting up the Hyenas to be over the top villains was the whole fun of that segment.

On that note, I also hate that Scar just looked sickly rather than scary. He was indeed scarred and skinnier than Mufasa, yes, but he had a different color scheme, and was meant to be an intimidating villain, not malnourished. I guess there was no good way to do that in the movie while keeping with the "realistic animals" aesthetic?

The only segment I feel the 2019 version does better than the original was Nala "meeting" Timon and Pumbaa. I actually laughed, I admit it.
