Warthogs are that ugly. It's surprising they didn't pretty Pumbaa up a bit since they made Rafiki a really tiny mandrill and the hyenas grey instead of sand-coloured.
Pumbaa was just scary looking and not very emotive. When I saw it the kids didn't scream and laugh loudly like they do for other animated movies, I am pretty sure most didn't even care when Mufasa died.

Scar looked so pitiful.
