Some have speculated that learning to write kanji as children improves their drawing skills. Their art education also doesn't seem to have been sabotaged like it has in the West.

They don't actually think that. This is based on the confused idea that because a Japanese person can call all animation anime, it means they don't see any difference between different kinds of animation. When they say anime they just mean animation.

American art schools seem to be teaching people how to get worse.
Even doodly Japanese art styles like Little Witch Academia look more polished than average American show.

There's a ton of awful Japanese art of places like Pixiv and the like, it just doesn't get spread around in non-Japanese sites. Like how the manga that gets translated is only the cream of the crop out of thousands and thousands of manga.
Also weebs have been conditioned to view anime styles as being better then other styles.

We don't even do shading in the west.

It is a very simple art style. They go off-model so damn often you forget what on-model looks like.
But not in the lazy way Steven Universe does. This show had some structure and energy to the style, even I the characters seemed to have less weight than they should (like Tiny Toons a bit). But you knew people who designed it have drawn some real humans in their lives rather than animating notebook doodles like OK KO (God that show is a fucking eyesore)
