They didn't. They took what Snyder did and made a generic "gods are real!!" movie.
If was directed by that genius of Snyder he would have done something inteligent and made Wondy and the amazons the daughter of an ancient astronauts civilization that set a base on earth.
Their elites would have been a mixture between eurasian and middle eastern gods.
And the amazons would have been a mixture of eurafricasian races and wore alienic armors that ancient humans used as refernce for theirs
