Neon Genesis Evangelion? Cowboy Bebop? Lupin III? Even stuff like Captain Tsubasa has better depicted rivalries and villain-turned-reluctant-good-guy than Avatar.

I like Avatar, but is is underwhelming in some aspects, and certainly not western's "best animation".

It was a good action cartoon and there aren't enough of those.

I know people who watched the show as adults who genuinely love it. It's in the top ten on IMDB iirc, that doesn't just happen through nostalgia.

I don't see why brotherhood is held in so much higher regard. They're roughly the same halfway through and brotherhood gets too shonen with it's cliches and final battle. 2003 crumbles once it tries coming up with its own ending while missing key elements of the manga, but desu what it does up till then isn't bad and at some points better than its counterpart

Because during it's airing in the mid to late 2000s there was not a single other cartoon on tv even remotely as good as it except for maybe the one exception of teen titans. Even the first season which is acknowledged by everyone to be pretty boring took a fat diarrhea dump on everything else in 2005-06.

Even if it would have been remembered as an average show if it appeared on toonami in 2000 the fact it came on nick and in 2005-08 immortalized it

It's one of the best of its genre yeah, albeit rather vanilla. Idk what would be the best one, but it's still good.

I'm not sure I'd spend energy to find the "best" show.

I don't get it either, OP. I tried watching it at the time and was put off by how annoying the characters were, how boring the show itself was and how the main antagonist is the most generic villain you could possibly imagine.

I dunno, look at what we have here in the west. Avatar was a high effort show with a story that actively tried to improve on itself.
Hell, even Korra is the same tier as Avatar and Boondocks, both shows are incredibly well animated and almost no short cuts were taken.
The reason why we don't have more is because only a select amount of animators can actually draw in that style and make it look good and realistic

I think a lot of it has to do with weebs who wouldn't watch a cartoon before this thinking "finally, cartoons are like my precious animoo"
