The Ring series gets weird. How Sadako kills you is that the curse is actually a virus that's some combination of smallpox and Sadako's DNA. It causes a cardiac sarcoma to form, and 7 days later it causes you to die when it detaches unless you fulfill the requirement to reverse the curse.
What is the purpose of the curse? Sadako is a dead psychic hermaphrodite in search of a fertile womb she can possess and rebirth herself through.
This later turns into someone fucking with the remnants of the virus to do the same shit, inadvertently creating an unstoppable plague, and wiping out humanity.

That's "Not Just A Job" from Freddy Krueger's Seven Sweetest Dreams. It has a surprising "Fuck you Mom"/Nerds Rise Up mentality for a story by a self-described feminist writer.
The protagonist is the son of Freddy's former partner, and at one point he looks at a book about serial killers called Beasts Who Walk as Men and it references Michael, Jason and The Sawyers, but describes them as "little known" compared to Bundy, Gacy etc.
Interestingly, the book has a foreword by Martin H. Greenberg in the form of a news clipping which treats Freddy as a real killer whose life has been dramatized.

Basically, the curse was getting stronger in each subsequent film. You start out with merely entering the house being enough to curse you, then later on entering *any* sufficiently cursed house could spread it, and beofre too long it became a case where just interacting with those previously cursed could cross-contaminate others. By the time of the (far future) ending shot of the third film, it's implied the curse has spread to everyone with the complete silence and abandoned look of the main city.

It's a thing I've noticed in a lot of Japanese horror. It was the same situation in that sequel to Nanashi No Game, where if you try and save your girlfriend's soul in the true ending, the big bad murders you, takes over her body and then srpeads the curse to everyone in the world. The only way to stop this is to basically accept the ending where you essentially leave your girlfriend stuck as a wandering remnant whilst her body is in a perma-coma.

Actually, the proto-Sarkics wish to use Yaldbaoth's powers for good, as they're following Ion's original teachings prior to his corruption and his empire's fall. The Neos fully embrace the corruption and the power it gives them without hesitation, and are despised by the proto-Sarkics.
Also, Mekhane obviously. Doesnt matter which part of the Sarkic divide you're on, Yaldabaoth offers literally nothing good in return for your service.
