I've been wondering about that world map. It's split down the bloody middle of the continent, if the elves wanted to corral the humans, they certainly gave them enough space. Were there no elves at all on the western continent?

Now, either this is something that has been considered and will be a reveal later down the line or something that the show writers just didn't bother coordinating with the map artist, I don't know. In old cartoons I'd know for sure it was the latter, but newer series like these are slightly better about this kind of thing, though they still drop the ball a lot

Well there aren't any magical creatures in the western half. For creatures like elves who rely on magic so much it would make sense for them to see the western half as a sort of wasteland. Alternatively; humans and elves already basically lived on the western and eastern halves of the continent and the divide just kicked the smaller population who'd been living on the other side back to living with the majority of their species.

The Moon Nexus, supposedly the greatest point of moon magic on the planet, was on the western half. The elves just broke it before leaving.

Black magic seems to be the only way for humans to catch up with the elves and all the magical creatures. If this was anime instead of a cartoon tryng to be anime, I'm pretty sure Viren would be the good guy here and the royals would be the incompetent buffons that ruin everything. Also black magic would still be terrible for the user but now it's a sacrifice for the greater good. And following anime rules, they use black magic for creating mechas and they can only be pilot by teenagers with MC being Viren's son (the rules since Mazinger Z). Hell, in NGE's early draft, the 5 minutes time limit wasn't for the lack of energy but because the contamination that could cause to the pilot. Everytime they jump to the eva, they risk to lose their humanity. Also they have to be removed from the Eva surgically after every battle. The sponsors weren't so thrilled with this.

Solving the famine doesn't magically make all the people that starved to death come back to life. It will take decades for both kingdoms to fully recover. Which is why it's a dumb idea to go to war and lose even more population before it's recovered from the loss.
