Do you think it'll do like Black Panther or flop?
Shang-Chi
This is all damage control for casting a white guy to play Iron Fist in the Netflix series and you know it.
What's it about?
If Ant-Man wasn't a complete flop and Carol can break $1 billion then Shang Chi won't flop
Eternals is going to need some heavy marketing though
Based Marvel doesn't flop
all three movies this year making a billion should have taught you that
Iron fist IS a white guy
But yes, cast in the mega kung fu guy new universe as a white guy is a stupid idea, just like Tom Cruise been the last samurai was a stupid idea. I want my African monarch warlord dude to be black, I want my hyper kung fu master to be Asian
Spider-Man Far from Home hasn't made $1B.
>Iron fist IS a white guy
In the comics, yeah. Didn't change the fact that casting a white guy to play Danny in the Netflix show was considered HUGELY controversial in Current Year and led to tons of negative press articles about White Saviors, Cultural Appropriation and Racism.
>Marvel
>Flop
I'm not even an MCU fan boy but you're delusional if you think it's gonna flop. The day the MCU starts flopping is the day Feige retires
White guy who doesn't know shit of kung fu and who never ever wears the suit nor has the Dragon tattoo.
To be fair iron fist would be cooler as an asain especially since he fucks a black chixk
Cant, like, every argument black people use against white people also be used against asians?
Except Tom Cruise wasn’t the Last Samurai. He doesn’t resume the Japanese like a white savior and when he’s trained in their form of combat, he isn’t shown to be superior in any way. Maybe watch the movie before talking out of your ass, retard.
It's going to be massive China pandering
Iron Fist IS a white guy
the implications for such a character are a lot more screwy than them just casting a white guy
>I want my African monarch warlord dude to be black, I want my hyper kung fu master to be Asian
It's said that your world view consists only of ethnic stereotypes, user.
Depends how well they sell it. It's probably not going to benefit from "important and brave" back pats as much as BP but it could still do very well if the marketing makes it appealing. Basically it's impossible to tell this early.
848 millions in two weeks though
Literally a week away dipshit
No, this is Marvel realizing that they get the bulk of their money from China, and chinese moviegoers will spend way more money on movies starring asians.
The problem with Tom Cruise in last Samurai wasn't that he was white, but that he (the character) was American rather than French like his real life inspiration, so it rightfully felt like something someone made up to dress a white guy as a samurai.
>dipshit
I'm not sure what makes you think that.
Possibly, but Shang-Chi is a good character with fun stories so it's a good thing. It's pretty much straight kung-fu though, I don't see how it will mesh with the MCU as it doesn't really need a huge budget and in theory it shouldn't be much different from a lot of kung-fu movies.
Black Panther was such a success with African Americans not because it was a good movie but spoke to a dream of African Americans
that being an advanced Africa that holds a rich and fantastical culture instead of the reality that most of Africa is war-torn, poverty-stricken, and divided
this dream is also that of one of Liberal Whites who often fetishize African culture
to become successful in America, Shang Chi is going to have to do a little more than that. Not only because Asian Americans are a very small community (even smaller if you just included Chinese), but also because the fetishization of Asian culture is much more complex and full of racism. And the general American audiences don't really like seeing Asians on movie theaters
But their goal to get the Chinese money is going to have to be more than what they're already used to and it certainly can't say anything about their culture or government that would really make you think.
For Shang Chi to be successful they might actually have to make a good movie
>And the general American audiences don't really like seeing Asians on movie theaters
Then how did Crazy Rich Asians do so well?
I don't get it. If a Chinese guy studies all his life with Italian chefs, can he not become great at making Italian food? If a person of any race devotes enough to time to any martial art they should be able to become great at it. I understand some people have a problem with the 'white guy joins a race and becomes better at their own thing than they are'. However with Iron Fist he was created alongside asian characters like Shang-Chi (actually Shang-Chi preceded him).
It's like Balls of Fury but replacing ping pong with martial arts
>If a Chinese guy studies all his life with Italian chefs, can he not become great at making Italian food?
FALSE EQUIVALENCY
Marvel should get filming sooner than later with this one. Kung fu action requires months of preparation.
it did shit in China
also it had a small budget
sure, that's all fine, but if we're introducing a character called Spaghetti Lord, I want him to be Italian.
White liberals. Not even kidding. It certainly wasn’t Asians flocking to see it. Bombed in China.
you're thinking the character as a person, and not a character who was created by a person
this is the apu thing all over again
tbqh they should have cast an asian because the chances of them actually being able to do the martial arts scenes well would go up significantly
>implying Marvel Television has that much to do with Marvel Studios and Feige doesn't ignore whatever they're up to 99.9999% of the time
it's said to start filming in January and it will most likely come out on February 12th, 2021 since that Day is Chinese New Year's and Marvel has a Untitled Film set for release on that Day
are there people that want the kung fu character to NOT be asian ? I don't understand. shang chi is literally supposed to be bruce lee, the coolest kung fu dude of all time. when I think "cool kung fu dudes" I'm thinking bruce lee, jet li, jackie chan, not chuck norris and van damme.
I thought 47 Ronin was pretty good in this whole respect, just a whole movie where everybody is horribly racist to Gaijin Reeves and the greatest honour/happy ending he gets is to commit suicide with a bunch of dudes who were largely assholes to him.
No it's Marvel going hard for those sweet sweet China bucks, being praised for being inclusive and the world wide fans who will watch whatever they make. It's a smart move but I'm just so tired of everything
Isn't that the point of characters?
It's a spy movie, and they're turning The Mandarin into Shang-Chi's father, complete with alien rings of power and perhaps even Fing Fang Foom.
I thought African Americans liked Black Panther simply because it was a movie with a majority of black actors in a very popular series of movies?
I've never heard of Shang Chu before.
I'd heard of and seen Black Panther multiple times before his movie was made.
That is racist as shit
Also racist, but not as bad as the first one
you sound like a retard who needs youtubers to explain to you the moral lessons of episodes in children cartoons
yeah Marvel has some shitty representation for Asians in comics
Even to this point one of the last Asian characters introduced was one made to be fetish fuel (Silk)
Fuck you the last samurai is great
Also worth noting the most successful foreign movie of all time at the US box office is... a martial arts movie featuring literally only Chinese actors.
There's potential for it to be successful.
Lmao you sound gay
I hope we get some big tiddied Asian bitches
Your a fucking retard holy shit. Why do you dumbasses always bring up The Last Samurai of all movies and prove you haven't even watched it?
Their probably most well known asian character is actually a brit too.
Well Gordon Ramsay trained under the best French chefs but nobody in France would ever consider him a great chef because he's a fucking rosbif.
Unless they get the guys from Winter Soldier, the fights are gonna be lame and weightless. Martial Arts movies make a point to choreograph and film extended fights, not mash together a series of cuts and angles. That’s the entire point of martial arts films.
He's right though, not because Asians are naturally better at martial arts but because Chinese actors tend to have martial arts training in their background.
OK. Kevin Costner was the Last of the Mohikans. Same thing. A white guys shows up, "joins the tribe", is taught the ways of their people, and is the great hero who holds the line and defends them to the death as the last of their kind.
It's called the "White Savior" trope, user. Educate yourself.
Are you talking about Dances with Wolves or Daniel Day Lewis in Last of the Mohicans you dumb motherfucker
They're paraphrasing a skit from CHAPPELLE'S SHOW. You want to call Dave Chappelle a racist, user? You don't have the guts.
Its not the same thing retard, you are proving yet again that you haven't even seen the movie your bitching about.
asian kung fu guy from 70s kung fu period. now, he's a side character. he taught spider-man spider-fu. he showed up in avengers world. he just shows up when they need asians.
>cap calling japs yellow monkeys
>sappy jap namor
>amadeus cho is an asian whose power is being good at math
it's hilarious and no one calls them out on it. now they want to make a movie about an asian guy who does kung fu, because they have no other characters to pick.
Except the Winter Soldier fight scenes look like shit compared to real martial arts movies, they do have a ton of unnecessary cuts and shaky can compared to Hong Kong movies.
I agree with your sentiment though: practical, painfully long to film stunt scenes, with visual clarity is essential to good kung fu shit, which is why I'm not optimistic about Shang Chi being good.
And I say unnecessary because the behind the scenes footage shows the actors performing well enough that you don't need to shamefully hide it like in most American action movies. Still much better than the sham that was iron fist.
Kung Fu is a part of Chinese culture. Bushido is a part of Japanese culture. Bringing in a WHITE MAN to master those concepts and be SUPERIOR AT THEM than the people raised on them is CULTURAL APPROPRIATION. It is racist and it is WRONG.
Mic DROPPED. You LOSE.
No I’m literally asking you which movie were you talking about retard
>Bringing in a WHITE MAN to master those concepts and be SUPERIOR AT THEM than the people raised on them
We know you haven't actually watched the Last Samurai. Its okay. You can bitch about other mighty whitey moves just don't pick one that doesn't actually do the things your whining about.
Because it's a thriller movie where it's meant to seem super intense and purposefully disorientating as Bucky overwhelms Steve, not showcase the actors real life martial arts skills like, you know, actual martial arts movies are for.
They could always go with Sunfire, the angry Japanese guy with a case of grorious nihon.
the Director is Destin Daniel Cretton who previously Directed & Wrote Short Term 12 & Just Mercy and the Writer is David Callaham who is the Creator of the Expandables & Jean-Claude Van Johnson and previously wrote DOOM (Film), Horsemen, Tell-Tale, worked on production re-writes of Ant-Man and is also writing Zombieland 2, WW84, Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse 2.
And they would have to be really careful or otherwise, the communist government might use the ban hammer
Stop larping, /pol/.
>They could always go with Sunfire, the angry Japanese guy with a case of grorious nihon.
They could, but he's a xenophobe who hates all gaijin to the point of murder. They could remove that aspect so he wouldn't offend Japanese audiences (who actually feel that way but don't like being called out on it), but then he fundamentally wouldn't be Sunfire anymore.
And that's fine I guess, I'm just saying if Shang Chi looks like that I'm going to shitpost about it.
I should probably build up a folder of Jackie Chan reaction pics in prevision.
Yeah WS had pretty good action. I don't need Steve and Bucky doing wax on/wax off shit, smacking each others arms, and those no impact wrist punches for 10 minutes straight. I prefer the straightforward blows and grappling. No one does Kung fu shit in MMA for a reason.
You stop being racist first then we'll talk. Outy.
>Then how did Crazy Rich Asians do so well?
Really small budget (30M) and most of the BO was domestic. Foreign only did good numbers in Australia
Ah yes, the "in real life this doesn't work" argument applied to capes, always a delight.
Nah I'm just saying I don't need captain america to do those ridiculous over choreographed moves. He's a soldier. His style should be straightforward and effective.
I hope they reboot Iron Fist in Phase 5 or 6. Too good of a character to be wasted on trash tv. Maybe we can get a Heroes for Hire movie after with a new Luke Cage.
Chinese New Year is on January 2020. The first 3 days are public holidays so no movies on theaters.
think James Bond meets Bruce Lee.
I think you're confusing wuxia with Hong Kong martial arts movies in modern settings. There are Jackie Chan movies with less ridiculous kooky movie shit than Cap's frontflip in the opening fight or Bucky's knife flip.
Besides we were talking about how the scene is filmed, not how it's choreographed.
China is the second biggest (and growing) film market.
It will do just fine, assuming they market it right.
Chinese New Years 2021
I don't think its shot badly at all though. The Bucky fights are pretty great. So not sure what your point is.
Then read the reply chain.
It is also a movie
Nothing more than a fantasy
And you're a retard
I guess we just disagree then
I think they lean on the "superhero" aspect (and be better for it) rather than the "Kung-fu", meaning they'll likely have him doing superhuman stuff like energy fists and breaking walls and stuff. Coupled with a cameo or two of other MCU heroes.
>I want my hyper kung fu master to be Asian
then Asian people would complain about being typecast as martial artists.
Danny should be white, or biracial at most. Not Asian.
Nips loved The Last Samurai though, even dedicated a national holiday for the crazy Scientologist guy.
>And the general American audiences don't really like seeing Asians on movie theaters
Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan say otherwise
an Asian martial artist is different and an easy sell
I'm glad at least one person pointed this out.
+1 user
Everyone knows real libtards dont say fucking MiC dRoP lmao, they like saying "Thanks for coming to my TedTalk."
what year is this?
IRON FIST WAS NOT SUPERIOR
HE LITERALLY LEAVES KUN LUN TO PALL AROUND NYC WITH LUKE, MISTY AND COLLEEN. HE GOT HIS ASS KICKED IN THE IMMORTAL IRON FIST RUN.
Except American made live action asian movies don't do well in asia. It's the equivalent of opening a taco bell in Mexico. Why bother with the imitation when the authentic stuff is better and more bountiful
think about how he was conceptualized, not him as a character
Disney kind of killed any potential race based hype for this movie, huh? They can't really lush this as the black panther for Asians when Mulan is gonna come out soon.
In fact Mulan's performance should give us an idea of how well Shang- Chi could potentially do in asia.
Its still a public holiday. No movies shown that day. Guess the Chinese either get it early or wait the following week
There's not even a casting for Shang-chi yet, how could there be any 'hype' in the first place?
I'm asian, so I'll probably watch it.
That's why i specified 'potential' hype, ya mong.
Tom Cruise didn't surpass the samurai, retard.
He wasn't even the titular "Last Samurai"
I don't know. But Shang Chi should be played by a black actor because China needs to learn to be more inclusive of minorities.
man this shit going to straight up fuckin big flop
Just like Black Panther & Captain Marvel, right?
>nor has the Dragon tattoo
I honestly have no idea who Shang-Chi is, so I'd say it'll score pretty low unless they have something that people recognize. Another established avenger,a cool villain or some kick-ass director, anything, but right now I don't see myself rushing in the theater.
Having barely base level knowledge of Shang-Chi, I can earnestly say I don't give a fuck about this, when it should just be an Iron Fist film instead.
But, since they fucked up IF's TV show, that ain't happening. And I doubt anyone will care about Shang-Chi.
Is that the official title design?
Pretty sure
It's impossible for anything that panders to chinks to flop
>No one knows about (blank), $300M BO at most.
>It'll flop, because people want (blank) and (blank) isn't in the movie!
>*movie releases*
>Pft, that's just a typical MCU movie weekend, it won't have legs past the second.
>Yeah, well, it's an MCU product, it's basically running off the brand, third week dropoff will confirm its fate.
>Look, there are no other movies out at the time to actually compete with it, it basically has free reign over the theaters right now.
>So what if it hit a billion? Marvel movies are almost expected to do that by default, why should I be impressed?
>Disney is basically buying its own tickets anyhow, who gives a fuck, look at all the pictures of empty theaters?
The situation is very similar to Guardians of the Galaxy. It's too early to immediately rule it a flop, but they need a good director to make it work.
Fiege was planning to do an Iron Fist movie since like 2010 tho. If we hadnt gotten a Netflix show, he would've gotten this movie.
I want to live in the timeline where we got the movie instead
Marvel has a big opportunity to revive the kung-fu genre and put their own spin on it. They better cast Chang-Chi right because he can very easily become this generation's Bruce Lee.
I think they should still do an Iron Fist movie, just have it pick up straight from the show.
>just have it pick up straight from the show.
No
We all want Shang-Chi to be asian, just as we want Iron Fist tio be white, for the same reason (it's comic-accurate).
>Asian people: If I want an aisian lead, I'd watch anime.
If they do still continue with an IF movie, they need to completely reboot the series. At the very least Danny needs to be played by someone who actually knows martial arts. Its fucking embarrassing for a martial arts based hero to have the worst fight scenes out of all the MCU TV shows.
It's best if everyone pretends those garbage TV shows never existed. Which is a shame because they wasted Daredevil, one of their best heroes on it.
Tom Holland would have to publicly rape a school bus full of children in the next week for FFH to not break $1bil.
Lame. They have Nick Fury and Black Widow for spy stuff, Shang-Chi is literally 'Master of Kung-Fu'. Alien rings and all that is fine but they should hire a strong martial artist to play Shang-Chi.
Daredevil show should be incorporated it was actually good. S1 at least. Rest is trash best forgotten.
>Even to this point one of the last Asian characters introduced was one made to be fetish fuel (Silk)
I see no problem with this.
>reboot
The entire marvel process now is built on shared continuity. Throwing around reboots is the one thing they could do now that could collapse the whole thing.
>S1 at least
I can see having this opinion if your only experience with TV was major network shit.
They de-asianized her instead of just finding a way to retcon it so she was always asian, lame.
TV shows aren't really regarded a part of the canon. I think rebooting those would be fine.
Says the person who longs for more Marvel movies.
Daredevil S1 is pretty good as far as capeshit goes, I'd say it compares pretty favorably to most Marvel movies. This is the MCU we're talking about, not high art.
>I'd say it compares pretty favorably to most Marvel movies
Yeah I'll give you that. But only low-tier MCU movies like Thor 1-2 or Iron Man 2-3
Fuck it, we already got a great Daredevil movie. Aside from just making that canon, the Netflix show is the next best thing.
dude u one stupid ass motherfucker
>we already got a great Daredevil movie.
Lot of people will give you shit for this but I agree. Other than some soundtrack decisions.
fuck shang-chi
And their most famous Asian writer is a white American
I hope this movie's good...
You think CM Punk will be in it.
The most they would do is pass the Iron Fist power on to a new character (probably asian in response to the backlash). Hopefully they don't, I'd rather they just leave it alone now
Too bad we had to follow the adventures of this boring white guy that doesnt even shoot like a cowboy instead of following that good guy samurai that just wants to live in his version of peace
I mean I get it you want to do a more mature version of the Karate Kid, but man did it get pretty cringey
>You think CM Punk will be in it.
My dad works for Marvel. CM Punk will BE Chang-Chi
I would actually not be shocked if young Danny Rand is in Shang-Chi playing a sidekick role, with Marvel planning to have him "spin off" into Iron Fist in the post-credits scene of Shang-Chi 2 or something. Get audiences to accept the character and by the time he's Iron Fist you have Shang-Chi (and Kamala Khan?) to point to if you start getting the White Savior pushback again.
>The most they would do is pass the Iron Fist power on to a new character
Too late
The best parts of Immortal Iron Fist were when they went back in history to show all the other Iron Fists. Answer: Into The Iron-Verse
No one gives a fuck about the Netflix series
Man all talk talking about some bullshit
Look.
Just either get someone who can fight or an outfit where they can put a stunt double in it.
Iron Fist failed miserably because they didn't follow any of those two suggestions. Danny couldn't sell a Kata to save his life
Into the Badlands had decent fight scenes
Warriors from Cinemax had decent fight scenes
How come the Marvel backed one had mostly bad fight scenes.
I'm gonna be fair and say that Season 2 was a marked improvement when it comes to choreography, but it was still a sad state of affairs when it came to the Kung Fu Show. I'm not asking to blow the world on fire, lord knows that doing quality fight scenes on television is though, but they just went into Iron Fist with the wrong ideas on their mind
No. Too much material to keep up with csnon for the average MCU consumer. Maybe if they had proper pacing it wouldn't feel like such a chore.
As someone who really likes the movie, I would shy away from even calling it good. It has some great intentions and a fantastic Bullseye but it has too many issues.
>How come
That's pretty well documented. Basically they didn't even try, aside from a couple of guest directors who couldn't make something good out of garbage ingredients.
Though in recent years, I'm liking some of the new Asian characters introduced like Aero and Wave so far.
It won't have the white liberal guilt that propelled Mel Gibson's Jesus Porn or BP to that extra bump that made it a billion. For starters, there's no Asian billionaire that going to buy out movie theaters for poor Asian Tweens nor is the press going to stick their tongue out and beg Feige to drop trou and bear down like they did for Captain Shezam and BP.
I think it will be a biggish flop but like 1/10th of 5 percent of the audience for Antman is aware of the Netflix Marble Bullshit and mostly Daredevil and that's due to the slash art about Matt and the Fatty.
I forgot how much of a twink faggot that actor was
Also tattoo means nothing when they shat all over the Iron Fist concept and Kun Lun
Neither.
Shang Chi is just an easy lay-up for the Chinese market
How much work would be necessary to pretend that only the Netflix Daredevil stuff happened but not anything else? Is it possible to retcon out the Defenders stuff?
But the old Master of Kung Fu run had a lot of spy stuff as well, which makes sense to keep it here.
>>Marvel
>>Flop
Bring over DD S1 to the new Disney streaming service, maybe edit it a bit and make it more streamlined. Ignore everything else.
Alternatively just rehire the DD team cast and all and do a soft reboot. Charlie Cox and Donofrio are great and don't deserve to languish in Netflix hell.
>just have it pick up straight from the show.
hell no, they butchered so much on that show, from Kun Lun to Danny's personality to fight scenes. I don't to have Colleen with chi powers canon and Danny belongs with Misty anyways.
Roy Thomas literally said he didn't create Iron Fist as a white savior
I was being sarcastic, autist.
Is Shang Chi still Fu Manchu's son or is that swept under the rug?
the comics have renamed him Zheng Zhu to avoid the issue after minimizing the references for many years (used to have Shang refer to him as "my father" in vague terms)
rumor for MCU is they are going to make him the son of the real Mandarin instead
>we'll finally find out what happened to Trevor Slattery after all these years
i will slap the fuck outta u bitch
