He's a time wizard. He can stop time at will for a localized area.

He lost his family in a catastrophic event that also killed countless millions upon millions of other people and totally devastated the world. This event destroyed entire countries and was caused by creature called Ogrest.

Nox comes into possession of an ancient all-powerful magic object which he intends to use to do the impossible, reverse time and stop that event from happening. In doing so, he would not only save his family but millions of others too. But, to go back 200 years, he needs to absorb an insane amount of magic(called 'wakfu') which he does using this giant walking clock fortress he built.

In the climax of the show he eventually accomplishes his goal by genociding an entire race of people and absorbing their energy, however when he rewinds time he only goes back 15 minutes which was just before the race was genocided. (Note that the MC possibly stole most of the magic when he grabbed the ancient all-powerful magic object and it gave him a power-up.)

Nox, realizing he lost, gives up the fight and teleports away to his families graves where he chooses to pass away peacefully.

Story aside, Nox is also a really cool character. None of his movements are smooth- he instead does very sudden 'jerky' movements like the hands of a clock ticking. Like if he needs to look to the side, he doesn't just smoothly turn his head, his head just snaps to the direction he wants to look. Makes him seem very mechanical. Any time he's on screen, there's also a faint sound of a clock ticking in the background. He's also got a top-tier voice actor which makes him sound equally calm/intelligent and crazy.

Not quite, he wants to absorb all the life force energy ("wakfu") he can find. Absorbing said energy means KILLING the source, making him a vampiric steampunk clockwork technomage. After TWO HUNDRED years of collecting life force, he successfully commits genocide, and doesn't just defeat but outright kills half the main cast; it is implied that he kills the protagonist too.

Also you forgot that he is doing this because the magic cube he found "told him" to do it, ie. he was imagining voices in his head. His subsequent breakdown is partially because he realizes his own insanity, as the motive driving him was "if I succeed, I'll erase all my mistakes".

AND IT WAS 20 MINUTES, NOT 15.

Anyways, his fight against the dragon was top tier. It was the mentor vs villain cliche shit except for once the mentor just kicks the villain ass all across the island, no matter all the villainous shit Nox pulled like bringing backups or the trap he set up, but it made it even more amazing.

I dont think it could talk. the cube is actually a heart. stolen from a race of krosmos-faring robotic beings. i suppose the most apt comparison would be the heart of lorkhan. it' just exudes fantastical power

He is a beloved father until he becomes obsessed with figuring out time magic. His neglect result in him losing them, so he decides to use his time magic to save them.

To do that, he needs massive quantities of magical substance (Wakfu) and he goes on a several decade long genocidal rampage to collect it. He justifies this, as when he goes back in time to before he lost his family, his actions will never have occured.
In the end he only goes back 15 minute when using said Wakfu collected through all genocides, and its a very emotional moment in the series.

His impact on the series is then made out to be idiotic later on, as it turns out he just didn´t know what he was doing all along, but as an antagonist in the first season he is probably one of the best modern cartoon villains.
In essense, he is a really good blend between Azula from ATLA and Kefka-esque villain-types

Also, He's never brought to justice, and is only lain low by his own hand after realizing all he did was for naught

the eliacube is the heart of a mechasm. i've personally always believed it was the soul/spirit of the mechasm that was whispering to nox. mechasms are, as far as we know, evil beyond belief and the cube causes nothing but problems to those who wield it. the mechasm/eliacube telling nox to go genocide everyone would be it spreading its evil, encouraging destruction and misery.

i guess it's possible qilby was the one whispering to him, but why would qilby be telling nox how to time travel? why would qilby care? and being able to communicate with and manipulate those outside the cube sorta defeats the purpose of his prison dimension. Yugo sealed him away in a place he will be isolated forever, it wouldn't make sense for him to be able to communicate with those outside.

also, there's the other possibility that Nox was just insane and imagining the voice talking to him.

we already know Nox is a little unhinged, it wouldn't be far-fetched at all for him to imagine a voice telling him he can bring his family back to life.

Reminder the Mechasm coexisted perfectly fine with the Eliatrope until Qilby stole the heart of Mechasm and became intergalactic exterminators just because they were chasing after the Eliacube Qilby kept carrying around from planet to planet. Who knows how many worlds were destroyed because of him.

In fact, the Mechasm DID destroy the world of twelve, but also wiped themselves out in a big fiery explosion before the Primordial Era. The world of 12 was a completely different planet, with other continents, other people, other deities. This also was destroyed because of Qilby.

If you read the comics there is an offhanded joke panel where we find out that the World of Twelve should have had an Apocalypse long time before all of the Nox shenanigans. But Xelor forgot the date of Apocalypse and was too embarrassed to tell anyone about it. So the World got to live.
