Sorta related but I accidentally dated the top editor of the Book of Life Wiki. Head writers only have a certain amount of control. Producers, consultants, the toy division, etc. have a higher reign of control, and if all that shits falling apart, there isn't much a head writer can do.

Brenner did a decent job overall with 17-21. Lots of returnees from the classic series, like Duck, Oliver, Donald & Douglas. Newcomers were also interesting. Writing ranged from 'ok' to 'great.' Even the worst episodes of those seasons were subjectively better than some of the episodes from the Miller era. The movies were also fairly good (Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure, especially). I think most TTTE fans would find at least one good thing to say about the Brenner era, show-wise.

What happened was the ratings and toy-sales started sagging, so Mattel (who owns HiT Entertainment now) decided to push for a revamp of the entire series, in an attempt to expand the demographics of the show.

So the show is now entitled Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures! (since season 22). It's named for the recent movie that had Thomas do a trip around the world to different countries (India, Australia, China, Brazil, and a few others). Half of the episodes of each season are focused on Thomas during those visits, and the other half is set on Sodor like the previous seasons. Thomas himself is now the narrator. The "Steam Team" was changed up: Edward, Henry, and Toby were dropped and Nia (a female engine from Africa) and Rebecca (a female yellow engine) were added. The engines now bounce around on their own. There's at least one acid trip fantasy sequence per episode. Season 22 just ended, season 23 is underway.

Most of the TTTE fandom seems to really despise BWBA, for different reasons. It's not so much the added diversity and female engines as other things, though. Some absolutely HATE the bouncing. With a passion. I've seen people make rants on the bouncing alone and how it ruins the original series' focus on realism and physics. Others don't like how flanderized some of the original characters are slowly becoming (Gordon and James especially).

Most of the international characters and engines are pretty bland. The stories are bland. Thomas just keeps making the same mistakes over and over without learning from them. It's just a mess.

TTTE is a unique series in that it seems to attract fans that are obsessed in keeping the series both grounded in railway realism and in Awdry's original vision. Anything that goes against those norms usually leads to uproar and fandom infighting. An incorrect signal usage or added rivets in the wrong place are enough to absolutely PISS some of these people off. So you can imagine the absolute shitstorm the revamp has created. It's actually kind of sad.

Some of us are still sticking around hoping this is just a phase. I personally am. I've heard Brenner's leaving, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Blast from the past, I actually remember this author. I came across a few of his fics browsing ff dot net a few years ago. I clicked on one and regretted it instantly. It was exactly like this Arthur fic, an uncomfortable description of children. For over 40 chapters.

I remember thinking, “this guy can’t be real,” but I clicked on his profile and found nearly 200 stories of a similar caliber, mostly Arthur, but Sofia the First and WordGirl too.
