Oh I'm fine with Herman being a crook trying to make a quick buck. The problem is that A LOT of writers make him out to be this pathetic low level joke who can't win a fight. He's The Shocker, the man with earthquakes in the palm of his hands, and fights Spider-Man regularly. He's not Paste Pot Pete for gods sake. They only pick on him because of the yellow quilt

It's more of a leftover from his character in Deadly Foes of Spider-Man, where he was paranoid that Spidey and/or The Scourge of the Underworld was coming for him, leading him to spend almost all of the book jumping at his own shadow.

Spencer is weirdly great with injecting characters you don't really think about with, well, a lot of character. He used to be kind of guy who looked at Boomerang and said "this guy, right, he probably has some story to tell"
Meanwhile characters that are A-list and have some sort of public perception about them, he just somehow gets them wrong. I kinda feel like he doesn't even grow as a writer and using Boomerang for his Spider-man run felt cheap like "this guy, right, remember how I made you love him and in turn you started to love me?!". Which is probably something he needed after Captain America, to remember times when we liked Spencer.

King got his editor fired because the editor wanted to put a fill-in artist on one particular issue because the main artist was on vacation, and the editor didn't want to force a guy on vacation to have to spend that vacation working.
So King complained to the top brass in order to have that editor fired and the artist forced to scrap his vacation, all because King wanted to have Batman proposing to Catwoman be drawn by a different artist.
