The original book was likely just Jim Davis finally getting to use a bunch of weird-ass ideas he'd had over the years that obviously wouldn't fit into the comic strip. A few of the stories were written by other people, though. Both the animated and comic adaption just kind of went with the flow and did their own take on the idea. (Diana's Piano is only in the animated version, for example)
