Meanwhile, in the shithole parts of the world, were food is scarce, being fat is seen as a status symbol simply because it's visible proof that you get plenty to eat.

those are culturally determined factors of attractiveness. Something like hip to waist ratio is supposedly more innate, like face symmetry, or youthful features, or a nice rack.
