Would western comics benefit from manga's release structure?

Would it work? For example let's say instead of seeing 5 current Spider-Man themed ongoing's issues on the shelf for $5, there's a collected magazine every month with all 5 in there for $25. What are Yea Forums's thoughts?

Attached: sj.jpg (360x526, 79K)

Doesnt work, retard weeb. go back to Yea Forums.

SHUT THE FUCK UP WEEB

Go back to Yea Forums weeb. We prefer our overpriced single issues over your phonebook monochrome newsprint.

DC is presently experimenting with that. They're putting out larger magazines with their top titles and a few smaller ones mixed in for exposure and putting them in wallmart and the like.

...

I’d read it if it wasn’t exclusively cape, but I bet it would, yeah

I'd be more interested in spending ten bucks monthly or weekly and just having a big phone book of "the comics."

Tankoubon are nice but they're only half the picture. Where are the american anthology comics?
rip island

I remember years ago writing about this. It was either on some comic forum or, heavens help me, back when I had a blog I actually got a few shekels for. I remember listing a number of issues why it would not work. It varied from how anthologies just do not sell well in the US market to the huge Japanese public transit system to Japan's recycling programs compared to America's.

Americans like to collect comics. Even with more kids reading digital books and more e-readers today, American comics sales are just too different from how manga is sold.

Give it a shot. See what happens. Make it a bunch of non-canon one-shots and experiment with how the action is paneled where the action can be highlighted in the manga style. You've nothing to lose at this point.

we had Island for a time. Lasted like 15 issues because for some dumb reason americans hate anthologies

back to Yea Forums you weeb

no one here wants to buy your black and white, right to left, compendium of "i'm gunna be the greatest ----" Japanese comics

why does goku have luffys face?

>post character made by Japan

Americans hate anything that isn't Batman and Spider-Man.

Mangaka work slave like hours.
Though Jump seems to give them a week off rotating each mangaka through the month.
Probably learned to back the fuck off when Kubo ended up hurting himself and Bleach (one of there biggest money makers) had to be rushed.

Oda drew that Goku

I wonder if publishing chapters monthly helps ease off the workload for these people. They tend to do less pages than average compared to weekly creators.
Maybe the biweekly style some comics have over in the US should be adopted in Japan.
One pieces creator drew Goku like that.

Wouldn't work. I think converting to that format would be to costly somehow.

it won't work for several reasons:

1. Manga is run under sweatshop conditions that spoiled, pampered American/British shits (artists AND writers) would never EVER be able to handle. Especially artists/writer double threats: they'd scream rape having to turn out 10-15 pages a week with ZERO breaks (cause you fucking HAVE TO PRODUCE) and have to be publicly raped/executed on live stream for the world to see, to put the fear in all of the other talent to force them to STFU and endure the hellish conditions

2. Spoiled shit artists would throw a tantrum/scream rape if they had to produce work in black and white and on the cheapest newsprint possible. Bryan Hitch cried and cried and screamed rape so loud, he forced DC to raise ALL of their book prices to $3 because he refused to work for them ever again if they didn't use only the highest quality paper, because he outrigh said printing his art on newsprint, during his JLA run, was rape.

3. Manga is editorial driven to one goal and one goal only, to make money. Writers/artists are basically slaves writing whatever is popular and doing whatever their editors demand they write. And God help you if you fucked that up. The sand nigger in charge of Marvel, the faggot Khouri, Bendis, Ewing, Snyder, Humphries, Simone, DeConnick, all of the anti-CGers? Would be dragged into room without windows and given the old Junko Furuta special and it would be recorded and a best of torture reel shown to new hires to send a message to them if they fuck up the gravy train by pissing off the nerds.

4. You would be pretty much eliminating all crossovers and mini-series events by doing this as the serialized nature of manga prevents such crossovers.

Aren't there already magazines like that in Europe?

This kind of thing only works if the readers pays less for the 5 issues together than for the 5 issues separately.
You'd have to make it no more than $15 for people to buy it, but then it may cost Marvel to much money
Not sure about the other countries, but in France, those magazines are dying right now
But it used to work. For several decades.
For instance:
>Marvel Heroes (2007) #1
>4,60 euros (somewhere between $5 and $6, I guess)
>content:
>Mighty Avengers #1
>Avengers Initiative #1
>Omega Flight #1
>New Avengers: Illuminati #1

how insecure are (you)?

a magazine canìt sustain itself if the story is shit.

We have this thread several times a year. No, it wouldn't work in the United States.

Luffy is heavily inspired by Goku so Oda draws Goku accordingly

Attached: luffy and kaido.jpg (600x640, 129K)

No. Manga doesn't exist in a vacuum, it thrives due to Japan's well organized public transit commuter culture. Manga works there because it's cheap news stand item to read on the train and toss once you get to where you're going.
America's driving culture is too different and we'd need a major infrastructure overhaul in order to adopt the same model.

I was thinking things more local to the region, like Beano, but I think they've been dying, too. Looks like a general trend for print stuff, butI'm not too sure how well manga magazines are doing outside of big names like Jump.

The problem with western comics is that they are more graphic NOVEL than they are comic. Great illustrations that don't really encapsulate dynamic movements. The panel structures are shit and don't utilize the visual medium well. It's more like an isolated picture than it is apart of a fluid sequence.

Comics are also much more expensive and time consuming to produce. Coloring, and printing on good paper make it a more costly endevour with more time. More realistic artstyles with detailed illustrations. Some times less is more in that aspect. Manga are better Comics. Because manga are structured better and make better use of the medium.

Did this have that gay furry comic in it?

>Kubo dealt with illness and a torn shoulder while he was doing Bleach.
>After it ended, he went into depression because he had nothing to do.
Jesus Christ, poor guy.

Brit comics are all anthologies at least. There used to be a bunch of other Sega titles in the Soni Comic. I'm scared to look up streets of rage because boys probably nowhere near as good as I remember

Western comics would benefit from decent writers.

>Great illustrations and comic in the same sentence

Heh

Attached: WOSAwEm.jpg (969x2052, 456K)

Decent artists too

>Kubo
>Rushed
>Got 5 years+ to finish wrapping your shit up
>Still end up shitting the bed with multiple plot holes, cliffhanger and 2deep4u loose end like usual
>HE WAS RUSHED

Kill yourself

>would it work
not really, mostly because the pay for cape pages is miserable, and being stuck 7/7 doing only that would leave the artist broke (most do extra work for different publishers and products at once to pay their rent).
A lot of the current pro are also really bad at keeping deadlines over a months, so it would defininely hurt to go weekly as well.
commercially it could work for the customers, though.

>I have an alternate history book that tells me what I want to have happened instead of reality. I win.
leftism is a disease.

Ah, that's right. The model I was thinking of was the anthology one while OP meant ongoing, like Sonic the Comic.

I'm really liking those. It's nice to catch up on stuff for cheap.

>Pretend that he didnt have nearly 6 years for the last arc for some reason

k

Why the fuck weebs think comics are only Marvel and DC?

>Also

How many French / Euroupe comic related threads are on Yea Forums right now?

Weeb comics are just comics but better

ou don't fucking read comics don't you? The western have great writers and great artists, even better than japanese, just that they don't work a lot on capeshit,

*Had

>one ''artist'' represents the whole industry
Based brainlet.

Attached: 1439844983216.png (374x417, 58K)

I wouldn't pay $25 for it.

Maybe like $10.

Manga don’t have different writers and artists so they don’t need to retcon or reset for next group of writers they can make up the cannon where comic book have something that are just set in stone like Batman Origin and comic book need to worries about other super hero issues run at the same by different writers so I don’t think it would work but hey if it work that be cool

>The panel structures are shit and don't utilize the visual medium well. It's more like an isolated picture than it is apart of a fluid sequence
How can you say that when you have people like Quitely, Kuder or Adams workin?
> Manga are better Comics because manga are structured better and make better use of the medium
Fucking weeb how can you expect people to take your claim seriously when you are this biased?

Have, you fucking idiot. Go look the eurothreads, there are a lot of great artists working in the industry right now. Not my problem if you want to keep ignoring them and pretending western artists are shit because ''they do not make good fighting comics like glorious Nippon does''.

NAM BRUUH

Attached: joy.png (225x225, 5K)

Now I want to see ll of them fighting against Batman, Plastic Man, Iron Man, Cap, etc.

He was rushed though. He asked for time off after Decide but Jump told him no.
Now jump gives the top artists time off (Hori, Oda, etc) because they realize they fucked in with Bleach.

On thing I give manga over comic is that manga can have alot of niche genres where comic book are limited in what they can make it much easier to get new idea floating where comic need to have to use brand names superhero to stay afloat and even then it not a 100% Guarantee but this is how I feel not say it fact I could be 100% wrong

Seething.

It's less genres and more topics. For instance, there's manga about shogi, manga about superheroes, and manga about cooking, but each aren't necessarily their own genre. In fact, some of them tend to follow they same story beats or narrative, such as ones revolving around competition.

>seething
That's all, really?

Attached: this is (you).jpg (645x588, 57K)

Not all manga are released weekly, a lot are monthlies or even longer like the erotic ones.

Comics are dead, and you're seething

Mangas are comics too, idiot-kun.

You wrong I use the wrong word there my bad but yeah that about it I wish comic can do that have new title to show up and do well

I’m a retard on phone so sorry that came out like a fucking retarded Mongoloid

Only way to save comics is to kill big two.

>there's a collected magazine every month with all 5 in there for $25
That's how it is in my country, at least for DC stuff
Every batman related ongoing is in the batman monthly, every green lantern ongoing is in the green lantern monthly and so on

No, comics lack the broad distribution manga enjoys. The latest WSJ can be found in any book store or 7-11. Comics struggle to distribute to just speciality stores.

Where do you live?? Not address like Country

>Asta on the cover

And Yea Forums keeps saying Black Clover isn't popular.

Brazil
>Not address
Yeah, I got that

>popularity dictates covers
>popularity polls are made WEEKLY
Kinda cheating.

That's dumb as shit, you can keep that false intellectual nonsense for your subredddit

>capeshit suddenly pretend to be Europe best friend because he need allies to defeat the ebil nagma invaders
how pathetic and spineless can you get

>I SAID IMAGINARY THINGS AGAIN THEY ARE REAL
get help

Any other stuff Brazil’s doe that we don’t for comic and is there comic book that are purely made from Brazil comic book writers or is that not even a thing

Demographic and genre are different things.

Many well regard manga are monthly like FMA or SnK.

????? Are you retarded? The Quincy arc starts from 2011 and end at 2016

>Many
not compared to the number of titles available. Also
>FMA
if you need to dig in long dead stories you know yourself you aren't being honest to begin with

irelevant to your narrative. Stop moving hte goalpost.

Yeah, looking at your original post, I get what you mean, now. It was just a semantics thing.

>Any other stuff Brazil’s doe that we don’t for comic
Maybe? I'm not familiar enough with the way things are done elsewhere to be able to really say
Maybe a difference in how comic book stores are handled?
From what I've heard you just can't get comics anywhere but in specialized stores in the US. Here they exist mostly as backups, so to speak.
Pretty much any magazine stand on the street will have the weekly/monthly capeshit. Maybe not all of them but at least the big 3 and JL for DC and spiderman for marvel
>is there comic book that are purely made from Brazil comic book writers or is that not even a thing
We have comics that are made here, yes, just no capeshit
They can basically be divided into two categories:
Long-running comedy SoL, think classic Archie (Almost all of it is owned by this one guy who used to do it way back and practically owns the national comics industry)
Self contained stories with anywhere between a few pages and half a dozen volumes

My point is monthly manga are less likely to fuck up(in term of story and author's health) because they have more flexible schedule. I just come up with series that most people know.

Oooooh are you one of those retard who try to defend bleach's poorly written plot with your headcanon?

Yes
Which is most likely the reason why the comic failed

>because they have more flexible schedule.
that's irelevant to "fuck up", since "fucking up" is you disliking the author's choice, it's not their problem.

I defend intelligence and constructed argumentation. You came there with nonsense and once asked for facts all you do is "THIS IS YOU" and "OMG YOU DEFEND THEM AGAISNT ME I AM SUPREME YOU ARE WRONG".
It's really self explanatory at this point.

Ok I might use a wrong word here, my bad. What I mean is there're instance that weekly mangaka don't have enough time to plan things through, not all of them but many, or miss calculate the chapters needed to end the story or arc(they admitted this on an interview).

For it to work you'll need to completely change how comics are even mades, and maybe a few laws related to work labor.

And that without even knowing IF the American's market needs or wants it since they are already a pretty fidelized customers (even if on the decline) with easy access to comics. Thus they may not want to put up with what they see as unwanted content, and which may result in costing them more or the same than what they already pay. Especially if these antholgies features no colors (illustrations asides) to reduce both their fabrication's cost/time. You'll be more successful with this formula outside America, but comics are pretty niche because of how America-centric they are, so you'll never reach the same number as Jump, who don't bother with publishing their anthologies outside Japan btw.

> Comics aren't printed on the cheapest paper possible in black and white, thus the cost of the anthologies would be higher for both the company and the consumers.
>Marvel or DC's artist doesn't enjoy the same intellectual properties on the story or characters as in Jump, where artists are also creators.
>Comics' artists would be even more fucked up on top of seeing their working conditions devolve to support a weekly or bi-weekly release, and thus may not want to work for you unless the pay is really good (the best would certainly avoid you though, which is a huge problem when art is a main selling point).

Not sure Marvel or DC's could pull a weekly release even with that, since comic's art is way less simplified or stylized and more focused on detailed background or complicate patterns of black and white. In simple therms; something you only see outside of Jump's mangas. Jumps succes is due to their ability to release a new chapter every week of multiple series, it's what fidelize their readers. If not for that most people would drop their title and they wouldn't have reached the level of fame some have.

Attached: 1501976207837.jpg (500x680, 64K)

With the way comic are made there is no reality where they can go to a Format similar or close to manga reader of comic like that there comic retain value or even grow in value you can’t say that about manga and the level of coloring and shading on every page of a comic pretty nutty while using the whole page where in manga you have colorless page with empty’s background half the time

Coloring is a none issue and should not be brought on the table. As a matter of fact, some styles benefit from black and white page

Homie coloring is not a issue fucking ha good joke user the reason homie hair was blond for super sayin was cause they where sick of coloring Goku hair weekly manga would not be a thing if they had to color every page but I do agree that some work is better in black and white SOME not all work Imagine the infinity Gauntlet with no color Or the hulk is that joe fix it hulk or normal hulk i don’t know color is a big factor in comic

The whole lantern corps are base on colors...... well..... hmmmm..... yeah...

I'm curious, would a system like mangaplus/jump+ work? Be able to read the lastest chapter/issue on the release date for free but for limited time and if you want to read the whole thing without time limit, you have to subscribe (gets some extra content) or buy the volume. Or they already one(I'm not very familiar with their online service).

Oh no. We'll lose one of the most autistic creations in all of comics. Whatever will we do.

Attached: 1302575993404.png (640x480, 300K)

Hey homie I love manga and comic they both have pro and con I just don’t think comic can work like manga it just two different cultures and don’t come at me some half ass response like o no man sad he lose his color cause again color do a lot for comic but manga don’t need as much coloring cause they can get away showing one page of full color that looking fucking great but again will take them to long to make every page full of detail and color every week

Given we aren't the ones posting about anime on a cartoon board all the time I'd say you are the insecure one

A corp should be recognized for their uniform / design

There used to be but europeans tend to just buy trades instead.
The only ones left are ones with 200 pages of Donald Duck stories every month

Attached: Bad_ending.jpg (650x951, 234K)

Wednesday comic's big mistake was how big the format was, but the idea was great.

No Japan has a massive centralized public transportation system that keeps their comic industry afloat.

Americans have become entitled to color in their comic books, which automatically increases either the skill required by a single artist to get noticed or the number of people needed to create a comic (line artists plus colorists). Additionally, it's become standard practice in American comics for writers to be separate from artists. All of these things stacked on top of each other leads to an industry that discourages individuals from seeking to enter it due to the perception that they can't produce something that could be sold by themselves, ultimately meaning that American comics will never be as prolific as Japanese comics simply due to a lack of human resources.

Isn’t DC tryingthis right now in Walmart? It makes sense you have enough good sized properties to do monthly releases with different titles each week, Spider-man, X-men, avengers and the fantastic four. Each one could house issues for different characters and reprints of older stories.

Bro... for the reader the characters can tell but the reader would not know right away easy to show it a green lantern then was time say it a green lantern

Yeah, but they're trying to appeal to the immigrant market. Manga is huge in Latinx countries and first generation parents find the prices of dinky little American comic books obscene for the amount of content you're getting.

>Latinx

THERE'S MORE TO LATIN COUNTRIES THAN SHORT SWEATY HAIRY MEN

Attached: 1540699009253.jpg (540x361, 23K)

There's no way Americans would put up with the insane hours that a lot of manga artists work. Honestly the way artists are treated in Japan is fucking crazy.

Honestly, at this rate, it looks more and more like the best way to launch something like this without causing issues with labor or publication would be to make it all or almost all reprints.

Like two.

>European writers and artists don't work on capeshit or haven't worked on capeshit before
Keep sucking those japanese dicks you shounen bitch.

Latin is a better term. Latinx is faggot shit.

If you defend intelligence you shouldn't defend Kubo rushed finale then.

Oda's breaks started before any of that Kubo stuff. Bleach wasn't even that important. It was rushed because it wasn't selling. Americans liked Bleach way more than the nips

Isnt colouring in the black areas what his assistants should be doing?

It wont work because the average wednesday warrior buy comics to collect them, not for the stories. And the editorials are happy to pander them. Every #1 that is launched with variant covers almost always ends in the top 10 of sales of the month. The editorials are ok with this sales model and had little reasons to move from them.

Oda can get time off when he wants because One Piece was set to eclipse nearly a century of Superman and Batman sales in a couple of decades until DC shat the bed and had them change the way the analytics for comic sales are determined so Supes and Bats would be in a completely different category. Shueisha executives wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat imagining his resignation letter on their desks after he increased sales of a print magazine alongside the rise of the internet.

Attached: 1558507965541.jpg (225x350, 22K)

Availability is the big problem with American comics.
There are like 5 comics available at wal-mart at any given time.

Walmart doesn't waste shelf space on things that people don't buy. That's why Big Lots and Ollie's have entire book sections while Walmart just has half a row of shelves that's mostly magazines anyway.

You are a idiot. Bleach was in downward spiral since Fake Karakura and never comes back. Kubo is just a hack who probably will never draw a manga again.

>Be able to read the lastest chapter/issue on the release date for free but for limited time and if you want to read the whole thing without time limit, you have to subscribe (gets some extra content)
This one.

Figures it would be the Duck books surviving even in that format, but good to know these types of magazines used to be around. It sounds like the format just isn't profitable anymore.

Hey homie, learn how to use the punctuation marks.

Kubo never wanted to be a manga artist, he wanted to be a fashion designer.

Careful user, he will find where you live and shoot you.

Really? Then why he did became a mangaka? It's hard to believe but when you read Bleach, it shows he put a lot of effort in the designs and tha fashion sense of the characters.

I remember reading somewhere about how the phone book manga is passed around and then eventually recycled.

It was something like:
Someone buys a copy of that week's manga anthology near the train station, reads it on the way to work/school, leaves it on a bench at the train station, someone else picks it up, etc.

Eventually, it goes through about five readers before it is bundled for recycling.

He is just memeing. Kubo is just a talented artist how can't bother to improve his skills outside of drawing. The fact that Toriyama praised his work didn't help him changing this atitude. But unlike Toriyama, Kubo lacks a solid foundation of the basic.

He had always enjoyed manga and sent some samples to Shueisha after someone who rejected a portfolio of fashion designs he did said they looked like something anime characters would wear. You can tell from the lack of story cohesion and background art in Bleach compared to things like One Piece and Naruto that he had never really put much thought into plot and setting, but had notebooks full of cool outfits.

Kubo literally took 5 years to finish the last arc in an extremely snobbish way, do you understand what fact means?

You'd have to change American culture first.
The best way forward is through digital distribution based anthologies, and that's a whole different can of worms.

even with assistants it's still lots of work. Less work the better

Yes!!!

>calarts
