Recently re-read V4 (pre-Archie reboot) not only does tranny Sean Erin LIE to Jan about being a woman (which in itself opens up the can of worms in terms of Sean gaslighting Jan) but Jan 100% cut ties with Sean Erin romantically once he finds out that he was a tranny; he stays friends with it but it's quiet clear that Jan goes full no homo on Sean's ass.
Not to mention that the entire TMK run itself is no longer valid/canon-wise and even then, due to the #4-5 Timewarps, you can make the case that Sean Erin is the result of Glorith fucking with the timeline to torment Jan. Who, BTW, had already broken up with Erin during the 5 Year Gap.

It doesn't really matter where you start. For me, I just went to my nearest comic store to buy any LoSH I could afford. Most issues are self contained stories (Tales of the Legion of Superheroes would be a good pick). If you want a younger legion though. You should order the Legionaire volumes and the Legion of the Damned novels.

I'm lucky to have pretty much all of it on paper thanks to a Spanish collected edition from 10 years ago. Come to think of it, I bought it like two years ago and even shared some pics with Yea Forums back then, I've read 11 volumes out of 17 so far and it has been a quality ride. Last thing I read was the "Sensor Girl reveal" thing, I loved it. I like her a lot, what a badass costume. These issues have stunning art too. Steve Lightle's pencils are fucking delicious. My favorites legionnaires are probably Violet and Wildfire, and I adore the deadpan relationship Blokk and Timber Wolf have.
This group looks lame and convoluted as hell from outside, but it sure is fun once you get into it. They even have a great rogues gallery.

Super Hero school is a popular enough idea to work with and takes Jon out of the superman stories if you don't really want to write him but without having Jor-el kidnap him or aging him up for no reason. the OG Legionaires can be teachers at the school (or going on adventures so you can introduce some new OCs but not throwing away the older characters)

Well, the part I would disagree with is the "-they are useful" one.
Biological sex is very useful still when determining people's medical treatment and work conditions, although a medical professional should definitely be able to give people a "does not apply" note when somebody's undergoing hormonal treatment (for any reason) or has some illness or deformity that requires them to be treated individually, without any prior assumptions.
Gender is only as useful as many people are willing to abide by it strictly. The "men work women take care of home" gender norm is gone entirely, the amount of homosexuals is increasing, people's tastes when it comes to their own appearance and the appearance of others are so varied nowadays, "man" and "woman" hardly lets you make any concrete assumptions about a person".
When somebody says that they are "sexually interested in women", it's a gross exaggeration, because most people have a specific set of traits they are after. There are people who only ever date blondes, or only skinny girls, or only goth girls, and have next to 0 interest in females who don't fit their type.
Subcultures might be more valuable labels than gender nowadays.

Problem is he gets shitted on by a lot of people because, faggots like Mark Waid, Roger Stern, and the Beirbaums HATE Wildfire's guts because
1. He was the first Legion member to join post-Adventure Comics era (which these fags think is the only "real" Legion
2. Drake (and Timber Wolf once he joined the team full time, to a lesser extent) was the first real example of Legion aping Marvel with more "realistic" characters with angst and normal people problems/personalities
3. The fact that Drake was quite literally the Wolverine of the Legion; people forget, that Drake was always supposed to be a one-off character but fans loved him so much that the writers brought him back. Not to mention the whole fiasco where fans voted Drake leader of the team in, IIRC, the first "Legion readers pick the leader" contest and it fucked up their plans for making Superboy the leader and spent Drake's entire tenure on the team crapping on him and even made his election a joke, by having Superboy actually win but having to forfeit because he was still going back and forth from the past and the Legion suddenly having a rule saying you had to be there 24-7 to lead.
