In the olden days, wealthy people would just pay artists to sit around and be artists. Maybe force them to design a statue or war machines every now and again like the Duke of Milan did to Leonardo de Vinci, but that still gave him plenty of time to loaf around in lady's underwear and devote time to being creative.

Patreon is just a decentralized version of the same system. INstead of relying on one wealthy asshole you can have scores of poorer assholes fund the mad ramblings of a slightly creative person who might every now and again produce something entertaining. Maybe that something is something they couldn't have done while also picking up cashier shifts at a grocery store.

Yeah but thats clearly Davinci doing submissioned requests. Felix claimed in his vid that he simply doesn't enjoy the submissions of companies and would rather focus more on the stuff he himself enjoys.

But I get that it is all voluntarily paid and I actually aspire being freelancing independent illustrator myself, so I kinda get the idea of the mindset, which I personally just grew out of. It just sounds extremely snobby when you basically claim all your personal art is great and submission art from costumers is oh so below you, but at least hes honest about it

Speaking as fellow Australian, the fact that our best living animator is reduced to living in the bush and making corporate promotional films for a living is a travesty. Our government gives far more money to far lesser artists than what Felix is getting from Patreon, he deserves every cent in my view.
