I've seen multiple shows and comics in which an evil commander uses a sacrificial group of troops to gain a larger victory, but the token good guy who always objects never seems to really have a better plan. Do you think they would do this if a direct engagement was going to be LESS costly? It feels bad to condemn some troops to definitely die, but it is better than losing far more in a straight-up fight.

He's fighting a guy with a lightsaber and his strategy is to jetpack right into melee range so he can get his blaster cut in half. The closest he ever came to using any kind of effective tactic against Luke was tying him up and that didn't last long.

I don't give a shit what Phasma did in the comics. I refuse to find out. I have always found Star Wars retroactively inserting canon to pad out characters and stories in otherwise enclosed tales to be a pointless, uninteresting gesture when the conclusion is already firmly foregone, and you better believe fucking nothing has changed for Phasma, a character whose entire existence on-screen could have been replaced by foot soldiers and goons and NO ONE would have cared.
She showed up on screen over two movies, made some passive-aggressive threats that came to nothing, and died like an absolute bitch in every sense of the word. Nothing they write her doing in the comics will ever change that. You wanted me to give a shit about her? That was her chance. She blew it, and blew it hard, and I'm fucking done with her.
