That was successful in japan, and it wouldn't have been able to stand on its own if it didn't have an anchor over there.
Production costs had been absorbed by merch sold over there, the only costs needed in the west were translation and distribution, which is a drop in the bucket compared to producing from scratch.

I suppose I should have said WESTERN girl action shows historically perform badly. Not sure why they do well in the east with all their magical girl shit, aside from culturally being able to sell perv merchandise to guys as well as normal merch to girls without upsetting soccer moms.

I'm talking about the performance of original PPG and G4 MLP, not the size of periphery demographics, in response to the claim that "girl action shows historically perform badly." The first one lived for six seasons, the second one for nine, and both have spawned theatrical films. I would say that's better than most cartoons in general, let alone western girl-action shows.

The first one did well because it had a lot of veteran talent behind it, like Craig McCracken and Lauren Faust. The remake was just made by some amateurs with little respect for or connection to the original, and a fraction of the skill.

2000s cartoon nostalgia just isn't as strong as it was for, say, the 90s and 80s. Maybe it's because the internet started pulling away viewers during this era. Whatever the reason, I don't think there's enough interest to get execs to invest in it like they have with the other decades.

It's fun, and has a great art style, and honestly sometimes that's all I need. It's definitely not perfect though.

Unlike normal action shows which are broadcast through electromagnetic waves a genetic action show is broadcast through genes. This inefficient distribution model is really what did it in.

To be fair, the 2nd one in the image could be done tastefully if Mojo had done something like a quick draw from a crouched position cowboy style.

Though, I do feel his guns are too small. That was a neat thing about Mojo in the original series, he always packed such great firepower even if it did little against the PPG (and who wouldn't if that was who you were going to fight?)

A. its derivative on the right, as he's basing it on the left one. The guy on the left is working from scratch and came up with the initial pose and feeling.

B. The guy on the left is literally making HUNDREDS of these images on short order and demand for the product, while the guy on the right has his own leisurely time to do so, and can do it 100% what he wants to do it like, while the guy on the left has a shit ton of suits giving him directions that he can't ignore (Or at least make them think he's not ignoring) without being shitcanned outright.

C. Squirrel girl has always been a bit on the ugly/fat side, so the guy on the left is probably trying to play that up to have a "non-traditionally beautiful" girl to play to homely girls that read the comics as a self insert for them (Look at how cool this ugly girl is, see being beautiful doesn't dictate your lot in life)

I don't like the first art, I'm more attacking the smugness of the guy on the right than defending the left. You can't claim to truly be better with just a single image, draw a total comic first on your own.

I really like the art style, plus I like the alien and robot designs. Jenny is okay.

The new PPG was barely even about action, and failed to do any action scene competently. The reason why the 1st one was so good was because the fights were actually brutal, the same can't even remotely be said by the reboot, which more slice of life than action.
