Morlun has a super shitty backstory that relies on one of the most hated ideas (magic for spidey's powers) in the history of spiderman.
"You're magic, and I eat magic spider people!" and that's basically it besides some babbling about why he and his shit family are so super strong.
Spiderman's villains traditionally work best when they're tech or genetics based-- up until the other, I honestly can't think of a single villain of spidey's that wasn't tech, alien or genetics based.
Morlun breaks the mold and breaks it bad.

I thought at times he'd use drugs to supercharge himself though and explain him keeping up (which would still fall under the "tech" thing).
My point is just that spidey's never done magic. All his villains have always stemmed from another source and that's stayed fairly true up until the other, which was reviled.
