The conception of love in Steven Universe is pretty twisted, like Pearl is mentally ill and have and obsession over Rose because how much she abused her, I don't think you should think too much about it.

Said that, S1 is still pretty cool. Appart from that, there are many good episode in later seasons, like Bismuth special, but they are rare cases of good episodes surrounded by mediocrity.

Watch season 1. It’s essentially a different show. It’s not ‘mean spirited’ per say, but the later seasons paint such a cutesy fucking world where everything is perfect and everyone can be redeemed through friendship and love. Season 1 in comparison feels a bit more cynical because everybody isn’t sucking Stevens dick every scene, and he’s able to stand up for himself.

Also the lore seems so much more mysterious in season 1. By the time to all of the questions are answered, you’re left feeling unsatisfied.

Hopefully the movie and season six have a budget increase so the art quality can improve a bit
