Conan Thread

Can Yea Forums help me find a specific Conan comic story? I'm positive it was a Marvel Conan story, but it involves him training these three, maybe four "Japanese" warriors who come to him for tutelage in fighting skills, and it ends with him fighting all of them in a deadly duel, where he maims all of them but lets them live. I remember one guy was blinded, another lost an arm, and one lost a leg.

Also, general Conan thread. Talk about the comics, the cartoons, whatever.

Have a bump.

I'm getting savage sword issues 3-6 in the mail on Wednesday. It's my first foray into conan and its pretty neat.

Why is this theme still so badass and memorable?

Nice. Shits addicting. You have got to read the OG Robert E. Howard stories though. His writing is actually electric. Just fantastic. They are all online for free too.

Savage Avengers is really fun so far too, check that out.

>savage avengers
Is that the conan with the mainline marvel canon or characters?

Yes, it's Conan in the modern Marvel era interacting with mainstream characters like Wolverine. As of the latest issue that I've read, he's gained the Venom symbiote and is wielding it like a sword.

How did Conan feels about the world of Conan the Adventurer being so much more overtly magical compared to the books, anyway?

Also... does anyone know the story OP is talking about? Please?

Meh that doesnt appeal to me, I like conan existing thousands of years ago outside of mainline marvel continuity

Not that guy, but as a Conan fanboy I was expecting to be butthurt about it, but it's actually pretty great.

How did they do it? Go back in time or something?

Its in Avengers: No Road Home if you want to read it but I'll explain as best as I can remember

Avengers are fighting this Greek goddess of the night Nyx. Zeus shattered her soul/power mcguffin into 3 pieces and hid them across time and space. While they are fighting, Voyager sends them through portals to try and get the shards first. Scarlet Witch gets sent to the Hyborian age and teams up with Conan to get the one of them that was hidden there, then they are all brought to the modern age to finish the fight. Conan ends up in the Savage Lands afterwards. Was pretty meh besides the initial hype of Conan appearing.

Savage Avengers has been stupid fun so far though.

Why is Savage Sword (ongoing) so terrible ? At least 1-5 had Alex Ross covers. Now it has nothing. Barbarian is very good though.

This new story could be decent....maybe. I thought 1-5 was just kind of boring. It felt way too straightforward for a Conan story.

I think you're referring to the Khitai.

It was terrible man. Crap pacing, crap dialogue, crap art. On its own maybe it wouldn't seem so bad, but compared to what Aaron has going on in Barbarian, it's not even close. I got a feeling Savage Sword will be the throwaway creative team book until they reach Legacy #250, then it will be canned.

Well I was trying to not be too harsh but yeah. I wouldn't be surprised if thats the case. I don't really understand why Conan warranted two ongoings anyways. I could understand if Aaron wanted to do his whole overarching plot and then have the other ongoing for more one off stories but Aaron is doing both better so...

It's just the Marvel way. They see one thing being successful (or anticipate it so), and they do it 10 times over. Fantastic Four is doing well ATM? Launch Invisible Woman mini series, and Yancy Street series. Same with Black Panther and all its adjunct series.

People want Conan? Give them Conan, Savage Sword of Conan, Age of Conan: Belit, and Age of Conan: Valeria. Oh, and this fall is coming another Conan mini drawn and written by Ribic (which sounds fucking dope desu).

Marvel smells cash and goes "MORE MORE MORE". It's shortsighted but the market is run by whales now and they can get away with it.

Is Conan Public Domain?

no

In Europe yes, in America no

Why is America so stingy about that?

American politics is bought and sold by big business

Corporations don't want to lose control of properties, so they lobby hard and keep getting copyright laws changed. Disney being one of the main offenders

Yeah, on studying, the race is definitely Khitai, although the ones present in the story are given more of a "Japanese" aesthetic, in comparison to, say, the distinctly Chinese themed Kuchum and Li'zya from "The Skull on the Seas" story in The Savage Sword of Conan #190-#194.

So, seriously, does nobody at least know where there's a list of Conan's storylines from the comics?

Thanks. I just wish it was more useful. I don't mind reading through the entire run of The Savage Sword, but it's going to take a while...

To be fair there are worse things you can do with your time. Savage Sword is peak comics

Inspired by the mention of the Savage Avengers, and recollections of the What If comics where Conan both was offered a place on the Avengers by Captain America and befriended Thor, I'm curious: would anyone else on Yea Forums read a series about a time-displaced and stranded Conan being taken in by the Avengers and trying to cope with the combination of future shock and rooming with the crazies that are the Avengers at Avengers Tower/Mansion/Whatever?

That doesnt appeal to me at all. Conan belongs in the hyborian age. He doesnt belong with superheroes.

It would be like if star trek crossed over with lord of the rings. Just doesn't work for me.

this. the whole point of conan is its a fantasy comic. putting him on a new york city sidewalk defeats the purpose of reading

What's the comic where he beats the bear by proving it doesn't exist?

Read Conan books a bit in my tweens. Honestly was more a fan of Frank Frazetta and that heavy metal style artwork than Conan.

Barely recall any Conan story that doesn't feature Schwarzenegger.

Read the Robert Howard stories, it's fantastic stuff.

Lemire has a mini coming out like that through Dark Horse.

Very interested in getting into Conan. Where's a good place to start? COmics? Novels?

Start by reading all the R. E. Howard stories

Comics since this is Yea Forums, but the prose novels are good or I've heard

Read at least some of the Robert Howard stories first. A lot of the better comics are adaptations of those anyway. Then get into the comics. You could try downloading first to make sure you like it but if you do and are willing to spend some money Marvel just put out 2 omnibuses full of great old material. Savage Sword of Conan is the more mature one, it's stuff that was published in magazine format to avoid the restrictions of the Comics Code.

Yeah, Savage Avengers seems like a fun novelty but I don't trust Marvel not to fuck up the character if he stays in modern times too long.

Thanks yall.

Yea Forums has been my home board since its creation, I have read a ridiculous amount of books and NONE of them have action scenes as good as Howard's original Conan stories. Also, to the guy who only knows Arnold Conan: you don't know Conan at all. Those movies butchered his character and made him look like a simpleton brute instead of the well-traveled, cat-like reflexes, clever thief, gentleman that he actually is

Is this still true today even though the cca isnt around?

Conan with the Symbiote is stupid but I kinda like it
also wielding Logan like a sword

Attached: conan venom.jpg (1988x3056, 2.24M)

I don't think so, I was referring to the old Marvel stuff reprinted in the omnibuses. I don't know that the two titles are different for the new stuff.

>. Those movies butchered his character and made him look like a simpleton brute instead of the well-traveled, cat-like reflexes, clever thief, gentleman that he actually is
this. conan is a deeply compelling character

It's a goofy idea, but I actually like it.

PABST?????
Like the BEER????!!!!

Shouldn't Logan drink Molson or Labatt?
Or at least Hamms or Rainier?

Only if they play up the tension between Savagery and Civilization like the Robert E. Howard books. I think it will be a hard sell for modern audiences though, since Howard clearly thought Savagery to be the superior option.

Copyright laws aren't global, plus a IP from another country could get copyrighted in another one years later. For example in France the Lupin's IP was still under copyright and when they aired the anime Lupin III they had to change the title and the name of the main character, while it aired just fine and with the original name and title in the rest of the world.
