What happened? Could Dark Phoenix have been saved?
What happened? Could Dark Phoenix have been saved?
It was dead the moment Fox announced they were being bought out by Disney.
There is no reason to care about a Franchise that everyone knows is coming to an end and will be rebooted by MCU soon.
Nobody cares
Fuck off back to Yea Forums
It should have been two movies.
>X-Men
>Not Yea Forums
Sorry it isn’t another Spider-Man Far From Home thread.
*slaps your dumb face*
This, it was rushed out the door as a last minute cash in/likely money-laundering scheme
That scene where Jean and Magneto are struggling at a CGI helicopter was not only terrible in general but reminded you of how much worse of an actress Sophie Turner is in comparison
FPBP
>clickbait news is okay as long as it's capeshit related
Have sex
Right here. And there's all the other problems to make it worse.
They were kind of beating a dead horse trying to adapt Dark Pheonix for the second time.
>clickbait
How is it clickbait if it is true?
With the same writer, too
>What happened?
They brought Bryan Singer back to tie the First Class and mainline X-Men timelines together.
First Class should have been a fresh reboot. Instead they made the brand muddy and unnecessarily complex with time travel. They tried to make Jennifer Lawrence the star of the franchise, and when that didn't work, they thought they could rely on Game of Thrones as a crutch by making Sophie Turner the new star.
>Could Dark Phoenix have been saved?
Maybe if there was no buyout and Fox was committed to the project? Although to be honest, even if he was given his two movies, I don’t think Kinberg was the right director. Not trying to be mean, but something of this scale needs a better director that knows action and scale better.
>movie set to be a flop = movie is a flop
HURRRRR DURRRRR
Shame, it was a decent movie. I don't get why some of its type receive a pass while this one was considered the worst thing to grace the screen.
>main character can't act
YIKES
RIP
>Another Phoenix arc
>Still no based Onslaught arc
>X-Men Apocalypse
Bruh the world is literally ending this is gonna be so hype
>Dark Phoenix
>The entire world is in danger, we gotta stop her or something haha
She does a few PSI tricks here and there so what. the nuxmen look like absolute shit. No huge jackedman. Literally antihype trailer I could smell the low budget from a mile away
Everything about Onslaught is retarded though
as a die hard x-men fan. no.
apocalypse left a bad taste in people’s mouths (myself included) and i remember hearing Jlaw, Fassbwnder and Mcavoy we’re done after that movie. so i was already like “well it’s done for me” so when they announced another movie i wasn’t holding my breath. plus it was another rehash of the last stand which we don’t talk about lol
As a die hard x-men fan all of those actors suck in their roles. I've been done with fox-men since 1st class. Sophie Turner got me pirate apocalypse because she's hot, but good damn they have no good actors or scripts.
So is everything about Thanos desu
Do they all die at the end?
Did she at least turn Iceman gay?
Thanos has good stories under him and a cool design, Onslaught is just edgy 90s Magneto with a convoluted backstory.
It should have been zero movies.
They were doing the Dark Phoenix story for the 2nd time in 5 films. The X-Men franchise was in its death throes well before Disney entered into the equation.
are you trying to say Dark Phoenix isn't a flop?
>Thanos has good stories under him
no
>purple barney in pajama is good design
pffft hahahahahahaha HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA
Reasons I lost interest:
>heard the same guy responsible for x3 was involved.. like wtf.. you're remaking the most epic x-men story ever and you rehire the same guy who screwed it up the first time
>i heard the aliens aren't even named
>release dragged out so long all hype was killed
>no hype around it being the last movie
>logan already felt like a finale and all these characters are dead in it
>sick of the screwed up timeline and continuity
>last straw was when i heard about the woke line from j. law complaining about the women doing all the work. bitch, xavier literally lost the ability to walk in his struggle, quicksilver saved every x-man's life just in the last movie. it made no sense, it was cringey and obviously an attempt to acknowledge #metoo even though it was nonsensical in the context of the movie
>shitting on Starlin
I hope your anus bleeds
There's a reason they based the entire MCU on the Infinity Gauntlet
>Infinity Gauntlet
aka juvenile garbage that wouldn't pass a a filler season in a toddler anime.
>>heard the same guy responsible for x3 was involved.. like wtf.. you're remaking the most epic x-men story ever and you rehire the same guy who screwed it up the first time
The same guy who wrote X3 became the producer for the X-Men films since First Class onwards. He was probably the last remaining choice left to write AND direct Dark Phoenix, on account that Apocalypse underperformed and Bryan Singer is stuck in a scandal.
Sophie Turner would have been fine had this been a made for TV movie. Because she's nothing more than a TV actress. She's not pretty enough to be in movies convincingly.
Caring beforehand was a dumb idea because we already had a dark phoenix movie with better actors and it still sucked.
At least people remember it more than fucking Onslaught.
But she's hotter than Jlaw whose a "movie starlet"
>>Thanos has good stories under him
>no
this board...
Shes plenty pretty, she just cant really act
Compared to Fassbender her performance was painful
This
>make mistique the MC
>make Jean the MC
>not Wolverine
normies want a Wolverine and his x-pals movie
WRONG
MCU dark phoenix will make 2 billions confirmed
>*slaps your dumb face*
What the hell, go back to whatever gdr forum you come from.
it's the same damn idea as another of the movies. wait 50 years for it
>wasting hundreds of dollars on movies that are never satisfying by themselves
Cuck
*punches you*
Not him btw just wanted to punch you :3
Didn't watch it because Sansa Start is a terrible actress.
>>last straw was when i heard about the woke line from j. law complaining about the women doing all the work
I didn't read it as that, I saw it as Mystique inadvertantly becoming a hero to thousand of mutants in DoFP but fails to live up to it because she's the same selfish person she was in First Class, whose only saving trait is her ability to work with people who are already better than her thus leading to her increasing anger, lashing out and projecting her faults onto them was her way to cope with the stress of being a popular failure.
That fact that it mirrors JLaw's own career after the hunger games is just a cherry on top.
This
This is why I never bothered to see shit normies love like Titanic. It’s like no shit the ship is going to sink and there aren’t going to be any sequel films or a cinematic universe whatsoever so why fucking bother getting involved with a franchise that is dead on the spot?
The only reason people even remember Onslaught is because of Marvel vs Capcom
God was this abomination still in theaters? I thought they got rid of it after like the first weekend to free up theaters for real movies
Fantastic Four are going to come into the MCU much quicker than X-Men at this point
>It's Disney's fault Fox made shit
It was a watered down version of the new cast that didnt have a bit of the shine First Class had, following the universally panned Apocalypse and regurgitating the Phoenix saga which had already been adapted into live action movies.
No normies are concerned with franchise reboots and shit.
I didn't even know the movie was out. That's the reason it's flopping. Not the director, not Disney, none of that. Lack of advertising.
This so much this
>*actions*
You are not wanted here. Go back.
>What happened?
Deadpool and Wolverine spinoffs happened. There's almost no reason to care about the other X-Men if they're not metalclawman or funny4wallman.
>Could Dark Phoenix have been saved?
You should be asking if New Mutants can be saved when nobody cares about the other older mutants.
Pretty sure they were already having delays and problems with Phoenix and New Mutants before the buyout.
Plus the old supposedly good Singer movies have aged like milk in the sun. I pulled out the first two films to rewatch after First Class. Holy crap. They were awful. Even my nostalgia for them didn't make them that watchable. I'd rather rewatch the 90s animated series. Still the best Dark Phoenix adaptation.
I think it could have worked if they went all out like Endgame. Have tons of X Characters and tons big epic battles. Just go all out.
Or acknowledge it as the final Fox X-Men movie and try to make it a send-off. And maybe put some more fan service.
Of course it failed. It's a rehash of an another failed movie and besides that, normans only care about Huge Jackedman and Memepool
Dark Phoenix
$64.5M domestic
$246M worldwide
Fant4stic
$56M domestic
$111M worldwide
Why the fuck are they lying?
Don't give me bullshit about the Dark Phoenix budget being 284x bigger or whatever imaginary number. That's not what we're talking about. We're talking about "box office bomb" and FF was a bigger bomb at the box office definitely.
Typical media. They lie right on the face of it.
It was an okay, B- movie, nothing especially wrong with it at all.
But stuff adds up, they bumped it multiple times and people notice that, word of mouth on it wasn't great, it didn't have good trailers until the international trailer, and most of all it paid a heavy "people didn't really like the previous movie" tax
That's moronic, and I'll tell you why:
FOX executives would still be liable for the money-laundering even if Disney owned them when the movie was released. In fact, there's no dumber time to start laundering money than when your job is going to be on the line (non-creative execs knew they'd be competing with people already at the various parts of Disney for roles that were otherwise duplicated) and your past work is going to be audited and scrutinized to see if you're as good as you claim. A large part of that money, even though it was spent by FOX, is basically Disney's after the sale.
It's just not worth doing. If you did it and got away with the money, you'd be super easy to find and Disney would have every incentive to go after you/drop you in the shit because they don't know your ass and nobody left there owes you anything. If you did it and didn't get away with the money, you've just made yourself unemployable for no reason instead of being able to find another job or even stay on at Disney after your equivalent from their staff gets the chop.
Madness. You just wouldn't do it.
So why would they make a shitty movie? Well, that's more complicated.
See the sunk costs of making the movie are already there. The budget is big, they've got a big name star to bring people in to theaters. The property has proven itself able - at times - to make a lot of money. So far so good. But as Disney buys out the studio those sunk costs are transferred to it - they're part of the purchase price so that FOX doesn't end up paying for a movie Disney ends up getting the profits from after the sale. See?
What better or more Murdochian way to stick it to Disney than to build up the X-Men as a viable franchise again, sell the studio at an inflated price including the cost of the final movie, then poison the well with a release so bad it makes the X-Men worthless as a franchise for the next 10 years? Murdoch has literally got Disney to pay him to make a flop for them.
>don't tell me facts
Dark Phoenix had a $350m budget. Fantastic Four had a $120m budget.
That's a loss of 7.5% of the production budget (never mind distribution or marketing) for Fantastic Four.
Dark Phoenix is basically out of theaters already (it's in just over 400 nationwide now and won't be in any next weekend), and won't make more than a few million extra on top of what it already has. There are no overseas territories yet to report profits, so it's pretty much done.
Let's be generous and call it $255m. Let's be super fucking generous and say this heaving corpse can drag itself another $9m dollarydoos before it finally stops moving.
That's a loss of over 27% of the production budget. Nothing else is paid for.
And they've still got to pay any stars percentages of the gross they're due. And marketing. And distribution.
Fucked movie is fucked. This cost is going to mean going forward with other X-Men projects is basically impossible. New Mutants will be a streaming release now, assuming it's even worth that to release. No more mutant movies for the foreseeable future. No X-Men in the MCU. Dead franchise.
>then poison the well with a release so bad it makes the X-Men worthless as a franchise for the next 10 years?
This didn't actually happen, though. This movie isn't a reviled disaster, it's something people just didn't care about and didn't go see. It's an afterthought.
>lame duck movie is ignored
>this means the franchise is dead forever in all media
Dark Phoenix's budget was 200, not 350.
*Punches you*
I like to punch too. :D
What if the failure of this movie is SO bad that it forces fox to sell the rights to Xmen back to marvel so we can get MCU Xmen?
Give me live action Magik pls
But X-Men is an afterthought to a bigger stake in Hulu.
>What if the failure of this movie is SO bad that it forces fox to sell the rights to Xmen back to marvel so we can get MCU Xmen?
Literally already done a really good job casting her and it's just going to go direct to Hulu and rot.
Name ONE memorable thing about Onslaught besides all the heroes going into the pocket dimension
It honestly wasn't that bad.
>Teleprots behind you
>No X-Men in the MCU. Dead franchise
nah, they'll wait five years and reboot them eventually.
That's the problem, or at least a factor as to why its doing so poorly. If it was a big trainwreck, it might have been able to make a bit more by attracting the crowd that got curious on hearing how bad it is and/or ones that like dumb fun movies. Even DC's movies, despite all the trashing its got, haven't actually had a flop yet(JL barely made back its money).
You can't ignore the budget you idiot. Would you rather your 10mil film make 100mil or your 200mil film make 300?
Dark Phoenix has a lower RT score than even Suicide Squad and all the news that came out before release was that it was a train wreck. The truth is a lot simpler, nobody cares about these X Men movies anymore
1 sucked ass but 2 still holds up in places. Still, I'd say the Singer movies overall were one big mistake with a few bright spots here and there.
Days of Future Past was legit really good tbqh
This why putting stock in a binary scoring site is never a good idea
"eh I don't care" and "this is fucking shit" mean the same thing on that site
MCU X-Men will probably be even worse but this board will still swallow the mouse jizz and praise it as the best ever.
*dabs on you*
It's all about the budget, marketing and cuts. 50% for domestic, 40% for foreign, 25% for China. I'm not including Marketing for this comparison
Fant4stic
Budget 120mil
Dom Box office 56mil, after cut 28mil
Foreign 111mil after cut 44mil
No Chinese release
28 + 44 = 72.
120budget - 72box office = loss of 48mil
Dark Phoenix
Budget 200mil
Dom 64mil, after cut 32mil
Foreign 122mil, after cut 48mil
China 59mil, after cut 14mil
32 + 48 + 14 = 94mil
200budget - 94milbox office = 106mil loss
Keep in mind I ignored marketing so the actual losses are much bigger but it's obvious that Dark Phoenix was the bigger flop
>What happened?
-Short ass film
-Villain is hardly developed, whoever it was
-The "X-Women" line
-Quicksilver never tells Magneto he's his son
-Not renaming the school after Mystique
-Tries to make it as if Charles was the bad guy all along
-Jean's death means that this isn't the same timeline as the one from Days of Future Past
There is something extremely punchable about mousekeeters/disney shills. It's make me sick to the stomach that now they will shill X-Men, which is my favorite franchise, because these stupid fuckers understand shit, they know nothing, but they will argue to death about some superficial bullshit, because they have a quota to shill daily
Fox-Men were a mixed bag, but at least they weren't mcu-tier garbage
>Disney ruined Dark Phoenix
Like they ruined Apocalypse?
>It was rushed out the door
IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE RELEASED IN 2018 and Disney acquisition supposedly was completed only by March 2019, we can assume that throughout majority of that time Disney really didn't have anything to say about Dark Phoenix's release or New Mutants non-release, at least definitely throughout 2018.
That's the thing. When it was separate, people were free from the mouse X-men shilling. Not anymore I'm afraid
I don't think people even know what the fuck this movie is. There are a bunch of better movies to see and I assumed it was just some more edgy normie stuff that I don't care about like Black Mirror. The poster looks like Captain Marvel which was a big steaming pile of shit and I've never seen a single trailer or advertisement.
>Like they ruined Apocalypse?
the movie was okay, it's the rabid mcu fanbase that makes everything non-mcu look like garbage, because it's not mcu, therefore everything not mcu is garbage, and fuck whoever says otherwise
Fant4stic actually had a fuckton more in the budget than Fox officially admitted thanks to those extensive reshoots.
Ah, I see, I took the bait, 5/10.
>What happened?
feminism
Dark Phoenix kept getting moved around and had reshoots so I wouldn't be surprised if the budget was higher than what they admit
Lol. The Wolverine and his W-Men franchise is dead. Disney is gonna have to pay Jackman RDJ money to sing in a wheelchair just so the MCU version will do as well as fucking Suicide Squad. Even Ant-Man might not get a sequel and that sold more than all but like 2? Wolverine movies. Marvel and Disney ain't gonna take that risk with the MCU.
your brain is a bait. but then again, you don't have any brain whatsoever, so whatever
I don't see jackman returning ever. And I don't think disney will want jackman either. The X-Men will probably have a massive renaissance under disney, but only time will tell how are they going to handle it. But even if it's going to be garbage, people will probably love it anyway
Why do we act like Suicide Squad wasn't a box office hit? Shit made more than Winter Soldier
it made more than winter soldier, because it was superior to it
we'll probably get a good Cyclops, Storm and Beast tho
It's a shame that prequel Beast was such a weenie, since Kelsey Grammer was actually pretty perfect casting and probably the best thing about Last Stand.
X-Men is will eventually be rebooted. They are too big to be forever sidelined.
>Could Dark Phoenix have been saved?
If Sophie 'Sansha' got naked. Maybe.
MCU Beast will probably be mocap + CGI like Hulk and Thanos, so maybe it will give them more room to do some new stuff.
I do wonder if Professor Hulk from Endgame will make a potential future Beast redundant?
it's already happening in the comics. they are back bigger than ever and it's funny how they started to appear in numerous comics as cameos/guest appearances instead of avengers as a go-to world-saving team
>they are back bigger than ever
We've seen the sales
not talking about that idiot, their profile is increasing. few years ago they were being reduced, now they are expanding again
The relaunch hasn't happened yet, right now it's just playing out the lame duck Rosenberg run until then (which is shaping up to have claim to being an all-time bad run)
What did he mean by this?
Funny thing is that they even changed the ending since it was the same as Captain Marvel ending. A lot of similarities between them too, from the shapeshifting aliens, girl gets exposed to energy from space and absorbs it to themselves, amnesia subplot, etc.
That was debunked
>in a toddler anime.
Easy now, anime has an entire genre built around being OP and nothing else.
Kek
Seethe
>*action*
*notices the furfag* What’s this? OwO
The test of it's goodness will be if Wolverine has a his mask or not. But they're probably going to leave even more details out because their model is to watch the previous movies and do that rather then ever read a fucking comic.
X-Men in the MCU are gonna piss me off when Wolverine didn't serve with Cap and Rogue doesn't get powers from Miss Marvel, etc etc... They have the ability to make those connections but probably won't.
>no x-men in the mcu
lies, people will pay lots of money to watch Wolverine and Deapool with the Avengers.
If by your measure Thanos doesn't have good stories, then Onslaught is pretty much liquid diarrhea tier
Sad that a 90s Saturday morning cartoon handled the story better than the two Hollywood movies that tried to tell it.
Hey you know that girl that's been a villain for three movies. What if she was a good guy, a good guy that prefers to shapeshift to a hot blonde for most the movie, and then tell others to be mutant and proud.
Without Iron Man or Captain America. You loose the straight man set up for Deadpool
>They are too big to be forever sidelined.
Maybe in the 90s, but Marvel has spent most of the last two decades actively sabotaging everything about the X-Men that makes them readable.
>purple barney
What color is Barney normally?
