BatB didn't really have a twist, but there were a lot of moments that felt shoehorned in. Like that time where Belle taught a woman how to read then some guy basically said "ugh this town already suffered when you know how to read let alone many". The Hakka came together as a migrant group much later than the original Mulan’s expected life-team, earliest in the Tang-Dynasty. In opposite to Mulan’s heritage, they live in the south, mostly Guangdong.They create the typical roundhouses you see in the trailer and which are uncommon for the Han-Chinese majority (though Hakka are ethnically Han, too). Hakka placed emphasis on education over the military and their women did not bind their feet, which is relevant if you place Mulan in a post-Mongol era (the Disney movie created a weird mix of Yuan- and Ming dynasty).
However, the Hakka also have a history of persecution in the late Chinese Empire. There were multiple (!) genocides against the Hakka by the Cantonese, killing millions. That’s why they have spread so far over the globe, and they were very involved in several Chinese revolutions.

So the choice to place Mulan in a Hakka household is quite curious. It's as if they didn’t just randomly threw time periods and peoples into a pot and stirred.

Katzenberg oversaw classics like Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King. But Katzenberg was forced to resign from Disney in 1994 that lead to a MAJOR lawsuit in 1997. His most recent films had underperformed for Disney at that point, but Mulan had yet to be released.

The Katzenberg vs. Disney lawsuit went on for 19 months, during which he was one of the founders of DreamWorks SKG. Katzenberg argued he wasn’t fully paid for the Disney classics he oversaw, and sought 2% of those projects continual earnings (LA Times 1997).

The protracted lawsuit hinged on Disney not wanting to give up 2% of Aladdin, Beauty & the Beast + The Lion King. Those films were already classics in 1997 & proved to be profitable on Broadway. Hunchback and Hercules were underperformers and Mulan wasn’t released yet.

Katzenberg vs. Disney settled in 1997, but the terms of their settlement were confidential. Did Disney end up giving up 2% of Aladdin, Beauty & the Beast + Lion King? Doubtful. Those live-action adaptations are staying faithful to the original animated classics.

What did Disney give up? If it was a larger percent of Katzenberg’s other films, it explains why they aren’t using any ORIGINAL MATERIAL from Mulan. That cuts deeply into profit. Mulan & the Emperor are free to use bc they’re real ppl. Maybe the live-action isn’t a remake at all.

Mulan wasn’t expected to be a hit. Before its release Disney was in a HUGE lawsuit w/ its former Studio Chief who wanted 2% of classics Aladdin + B&tB + Lion King & his other films. They privately settled the lawsuit b4 Mulan’s release, so he might own a large % of Mulan.

It's already evident that a bunch of changes have been made to the plot impetus, and I can't see how they could be for the better.

In the first movie, Mulan was getting ready to be matched, but here they start off saying she's already been matched, which means there's an actual person on the other side of the agreement that she'll be ditching.

This is less obvious, and I could be wrong, but it also sounds like they're changing the reason she goes to war. In the original it was solid self sacrifice "I go, or my crippled dad goes and surely dies, and they only take men, so I'll go as a man." It makes her sympathetic to all but the most legalist viewer.

It also sounds like they're selling her as already having training, which breaks the effectiveness of her struggle to keep up as a recruit.
