Well her initial stance of supporting gender roles would have to be reworked or else it would be a completely different character. There'd likely be less slapstick humor involving her since bumbling silly girls is sexist on american television. This would unbalance her positive traits, making her seem mary-sueish with the inventions and tactics that are inexplicably more inspired than those of full grown adults. Assuming her love interests were 63'd as well, she'd be called a slut for having more than one, and her completely ignoring boy Toph's infatuation would create bitterness towards her or Suki(Suka?) in the primarily male audience. If her love interests weren't 63'd, then shitstorms of epic proportions would rage for years over such blatant faggotry on a kids' show.

I was thinking about this a while back; I feel like all of the ATLA main characters would be weaker in some regard if you genderswapped them, which is a good sign for a story's writing imo

True, I think Aang would suffer the least from genderbending, with only losing Katara as a love interest.
But in the rest of Team Avatar their gender and cultural burdens that come with that play a big role in the character and not in a bad sense
I'm impressed actually how well they could portray masculinity and femininity. Both taking pride in your masculinitiy/femininity, but also how taking that too far is a bad thing

The main thing Aang would lose would just be originality. Female kids protagonists who are all about peace and love and 'can't everyone just get along' are a dime a dozen, it's a much less common character archetype for male heroes in action series (although it seems to be becoming more common)

Wants to prove herself as a proper water tribe woman so tries to take on the mother hen role for the Gaang. Katara is the one actually filling this role since she's far less silly. Sokkara would still be highly intelligent and a bit of a spaz, but her series arc would be more about stepping out of the comfort zone of her culture's defined roles and allowing herself to be a leader.

Zuko's need to assert his importance came from being the rightful heir. If he was still the heir even after the genderswap, nothing would need to change. And dominance through aggression is just a fire nation trait. Azula exhibits it in spades and is praised for it.

This could be interesting. I'm not sure how you'd handle the warrior thing though. Her training with Piando still feels like a good episode to include, but if she's not already a warrior it might have to be set up differently.

Not quite, she threatens people sure, but she always has that 'cold and collected' demeanour while doing it, at least until her breakdown. What I was thinking off was more Zuko's bluster (like when Zhao confronts him about the avatar and he throws a table, gets right up in his face and challenges him to a duel despite that being a terrible and kind of pointless idea). Also, by the time Azula is introduced we do have context for why she acts like that since we've seen plenty of the fire nation, Zuko is introduced and established before we really have any context, but his actions still have to make sense to the audience

Katara was support. I don't recall her calling any shots. Meanwhile, Sokka had entire episodes dedicated to showing him calling the shots.

Azula follows her father's example more closely. Zuko's more straight forward approach is due to his lack of patience and more honest nature. At least in fire nation that kind of bluster isn't inherently masculine, just a product of Zuko being kind of an idiot.

Sokka os not bad at the actual skills, on earlier seasons he just has a lot of karmic punishments over his comments and smugness.

But I do agree that worrying about not being able to fulfil the feminine ideal of the water tribe could be a good substitute over worrying about living up to the warrior ideal of the tribe

As far as we know a woman can be Fire Lord just fine.

If everyone else stays the same, she'd probably end up alone. Zuko would be the only viable match for her, but I can't see it happening unless they have added interactions not seen in the original show. I can imagine Sokka flirting with Zuko after he turns good and Zuko being totally oblivious, and there's no one who would actually want to push them together like with Zuko and Mai.

More mutual sibling rivalry. FemSokka is more directly in competition with Katara since they'll have a lot more overlap in their roles. Whatever small things they envied in one another as opposite sexes are now magnified. Sokka also doesn't put up as much with Katara's bullshit since there's no chivalry angle to keep Sokka from retaliating when her little sister gets snippy or physically violent. On the flip side, Sokka will feel more of a need to be a role model for Katara, and Katara will feel more comfortable confiding in Sokka.

Notices his crush on Katara immediately and occasionally tries to play matchmaker on her own with disastrous results. Also plays matchmaker with girls crushing on Aang. Besides that, mostly the same except her role switches from big brother to big sister.
