Okay. In that case I can understand your appraisal of anime, since most of what counts as 'mature' on that list is just transitional fare. Which is to say: the sort of shows someone watches when they are too old for power rangers, but don't have the depth of knowledge and experience needed for mature storytelling. Attack on Titan level stuff, which blows a 14 year olds mind but seems pretty lackluster to an adult that has seen this sort of stuff before.

I would say give a try to either Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (a show rather than the movie, as while the movie is beautiful its a bit high-concept and can come off as pretentious. GitS:SAC and Psycho Pass S1 are both effectively crime dramas in different kinds of cyberpunk futures).

The meme answers for 'intelligent' shows are Seriel Experiments Lain and Neon Genesis Evangelion, but while there is a lot to those shows a big part of them is that they don't explain themselves and create a lot of ambiguity, which fans conflate with intelligence because anything that hard to understand = smart. NGE is worth a watch at some point, but mostly because of how culturally significant it is than for any kind of maturity chasing.

For a more down to earth story, maybe try The Heroic Tale of Arslan. Its basically about the surviving member of a royal family in not-the-crusades trying to gather up his father's scattered army and retake the capital. Pretty good stuff.

If you want something that will make you think, maybe try Re:Creators. Its basically The Last Action Hero, the anime, with a bunch of different characters from anime and video games being pulled into the 'real' world, and having to come to grasp with the fact that their entire existence is a lie based on the entertainment of idiot gods. It does a lot with why we tell the stories we do, and a bunch of other stuff that you might not appreciate as much if you are not yourself a writer.

Read the manga if you want a more dramatic, gorey, horror scifi manga. Seriously that anime did NOT do the manga justice. And "modernizing" the art style made me wanna vomit. The story and characters are way better in the manga and I really couldn't stop reading it because I couldn't see how the series would end.

Parasyte is the ideal series to introduce people to seinen manga imo.
It's short, not too far-out, and has some damn fine storytelling.

It's, You can see the pattern of western cartoon is changing to japanese type more and more each year. Anime and Cartoon is just animation products, there are diffrent degree to all of them, it's just that most Jap aim at Teeneger while American aim at E-rating.
