Western style: DBZ

How would you make a western/Americanized remake of DBZ without destroying the source material?

an ancient legend with a dragon who grant wish.
that's like the first concept introduced in the manga and it can't be americanized due to evil imagery dragon have

I think Americanized Goku will mix of Tarzan and peter pan.

Native but clever.

I’d have Ed McGuinness draw it. /thread

>I’d have Ed McGuinness draw it. /thread

I would have jeff smith draw it.

My western DBZ would be a world like Mad Max but less rapey and miserable, Goku is good hearted, body builder metal head kid with 80s glam rock hair.

Two ways to work around that:
Either "Dragonballs" is just a name, and the balls themselves grant the wishes once brought together without the necessity of a dragon. (Granted, there would be a lot less spectacle associated with it)
Alternately, you could alter the back story and say that Shenron IS an evil dragon, but that he was imprisoned and forced to grant wishes in servitude (eventually reveal that it was Kami who did the imprisoning), maybe build up to an arc where gathering the Dragonballs and summoning Shenron was a mistake, because he is evil, and now that he's back, he's just fucking shit up?

Of course, if you did the latter, you WOULD destroy the source material because after the first summoning, you'd either have to kill Shenron, or reimprison him and never summon him again, in which case no more wishes and no more focus on the Dragonballs.

Goku’s is an actual monkey boy
Kuririn is a former Olympic wrestler
Yamcha’s a punk rock drifter whose fought wild dogs
Tien is a 3 eyed super soldier and Chiatsu is his adopted alien son
Bulma is a wiz kid with Silicon Valley aesthetics
Piccolo and Kami are Pharoh and Moses archetypes
Vegeta and Nappa are space pirates who work for Frieza, who is a mix of Lex Luthor, a Space nazi, and smug bugs bunny
The androids are more grunge than before
Cell is a Frieza wannabe with More super villain actions
Buu’s the same
Sayaman is more Superman than tokusatsu
Ginyu force are like TMNT meets the Justice League

Make it CalArts.

I like the Vegeta being a space pirate

I wouldn't, it just wouldn't work. No one else can draw, panel, or layout a page like Toriyama

>Ginyu force are like TMNT meets the Justice League

I think that if ANYONE in DBZ benefitted the most from being in a Westernized comic or cartoon, it'd be the Ginyus, because I can guarantee that they would have survived and become recurring characters. American comics and cartoons seem to love oddball villain teams like that

Did anybody read the new Not DBZ that came out?

Superman is literally western DBZ

Looks fucking godawful, I couldn't imagine anyone reading this.

Untrue. Superman doesn't care about fighting and only does so cause superpowered bad guys are trying to take over everything as usual.

Nothing you faggot

Sounds like Fist of the North Star but lamer

This. Whatever it was would pale in comparison to the OG. Toriyama at the height of his game is amazing. The fights just flow

>the source material
Journey to the West?

not involve any jews in production
dont "Americanise" it, stay as close to the source as possible

>How would you make a western/Americanized remake of DBZ without destroying the source material?
Make a western/Americanized remake of Dragon Ball, don't destroy that source material, and then go from there.

Make it a sequel to Hancock.

That's the lamest answer that anyone could have possibly given. You've already got Japanese dragonball. A faithful copy is an inferior copy.

I've thought about how one could westernize Shonen in general.
Sadly I don't believe it would ever really be allowed.
You can make TMNT and the like, but you can't really have the necessary kind of violence that makes shonen what it is between all the speeches about the protagonist wanting to "mamoru" their "nakama".
Lets say it isn't an issue.
You're kind of asking what style a DBZ adaptation would work best in.
First I'd say like a Bruce Timm style which would be a weird version of STAS that isn't episodic and Goku would have to be more stoic of a character.
There would need to be a strange sudo-martial arts wizardry aspect where it is explained extreme martial arts gives you magic powers.
You could go Genndy Tartakovsky about it and make it stylistic, but I feel Goku would need more body language than dialog.
Personally I'd love to see it as a 3D Dreamworks cartoon because I feel like I've never truly seen a violent 3D cartoon before.
Not like just watching cutscenes from one of the videogames, but more like Troll Hunters with blood and non-comedic pained screams.

Regardless the very best choice would be to make the music reflect the english butt-rock opening so people would think it is cool instead of the almost christian folk sounding "Cha-la, Head Cha-la!" of the Japanese opening.

Goku plays college football and then realizes he's from a race of government Red Ribbon super monkeys, then his best friend Picasso helps him fight his douchebag estranged brother Rad and Chi Chi is that anti-sports bitch you see in every 90s Sports Movie. Also, the dragonball radar takes the form of a talking robot dog. I'll take my payment in comically large duffel bags or blank checks

That looks like something Antarctic Press would publish.

Why would you want to?
Westernizing things often involves them losing SOUL. Like, most western media and art in general these days has no soul

I make Dragon Ball Evolution 2

>Goku would have to be more stoic
You’re implying that goofy childish heroes can’t be done for western audiences.

>the comic barafags always wanted!
Fixed :3

necessitates a pov character

What does a religion have to do with production?

>the protagonist wanting to "mamoru" their "nakama"
wut
>the english butt-rock opening
doublewut

It would be hard not to turn it into capeshit

Westerners don't want martial arts in their comics unless it's strictly humans-only, so instead of having to focus to fire a kamehameha they would just effortlessly lift their arm up and fire beams(like with heat vision).
The villain would be a genius scientist(like a supervillain) who figures out that saiyans have an exploitable weakness (like kryptonite) and there would be an entire plot where the protagonists lose their powers and have to prove that they're brave and worthy of being heroes by relying on their wits.

comic paneling sucks

why is this okay but black ariel gets a 500+ threads about hating nigs?

>DBZ
no
>Dragon Ball
yes

They suck at action in general. Badly. I've read because they need to fit more story in but its a bad excuse.

This is one of the problems, western comics typically have more panels per page, and want to spend a lot of time on exposition/dialogue or actions relative to the environment. Toriyama hated doing backgrounds (had an assistant though) so really focused on the visual gags or characters fighting/posing.

I wouldn't.

>You can make TMNT and the like, but you can't really have the necessary kind of violence that makes shonen what it is between all the speeches about the protagonist wanting to "mamoru" their "nakama".
Maybe you can't in America but euro comics for teenagers have plenty of violence or at least they used to.

these cant be memes cause too quality to be stupid

Anime has never had soul
That’s why they keep spamming DBZ this is considered the best anime by everyone

>steriotypical, quta negress with green afro hair
I pass

Superman in Japan

>Anime has never had soul
Then nothing has ever had soul.

>this is considered the best anime by everyone
By people who watch anime ultra casually.

>not involve any jews in production

The goyim are so cute when they think they're in charge.

Iron Fist has the same kind of mystical orientalism and kung-fu fighting that early dragonball had.
Just start off from there and add secret alien heritage, galactic empires and time travelling descendants later on.
