I can see why a lot of people don't find MAD funny.
All the stuff MAD was doing that was considered revolutionary in the 50's-60's-70's was becoming commonplace on TV and film by the 80's-90's. You think they would've tried to shake things up and become a bit edgier in order to catch up, or even surpass, current comedic tastes of the time, thereby creating a new benchmark for the next generation of comedy writers. It seems they were so fearful of alienating they already-dwindling subscriber base that they refused to pull the trigger, and in the process ended up in creative stagnantion that not even the best "Idiots" could overcome.

Which peak, 1960s? 1970s? I know Sergio was born in the 1930s so he was like in his late 20's when he first worked for Mad in the early 1960s. Al Jaffee is like 98 now. But a lot of the people on Mad in the past decade are probably 30s to 50s maybe? Tom Richmond's in his 50s but he's been with Mad since the 80s or 90s. I don't know how old Ian Boothby is but he's been writing for other stuff since at least the 1990s. Kerry Callen did those funny comics with a Golden Age style Superman that people here sometimes use for reaction images, but I don't know how old he is. Jim Gaffigan turned 51.
I assume the age range may 30s to 50s, which is not different from Mad at its peak. Sid Caesar wrote for Mad while in either his late 30s or early 40s.

That's kind of the problem: what good is a joke if it's one everyone else has already told?
Let's look at a successful version of this: Kelly. Kelly is 100% a never trumper, but no one knows or cares about his unironic comics. Everyone posts and loves his ironic comics because it's something interesting. It's the same joke he tells in his regular comics but done ironically with the cheese turned up to ten.
They could try to spin it into being something facetious or ironic in nature like Kelly does, but they don't. They don't do that, and the magazine suffers for it.
It's why the old stuff was always so much better. I wish I could dump some of the old MAD booklets they used to sell. there was shitting on politicians, but then tons of stuff that had nothing to do with mainstream politics.

MAD has always made fun of politicians. I mean I'm looking at the old fold ins and there was a "Who is fast becoming our all-time favorite cartoon character?" from the 60's and the image of comic strip characters folds to form Spiro Agnew, and there was "What Part of the Clinton Crime Plan seems destined to fail?" from 1994, where the picture of Bill and Hillary Clinton showing a chart of how to deal with crime like "3 strikes and you're out", "strict gun laws", etc turns into "Covering Up Whitewater" with Clinton covering up with a paintbrush.
The problem is that in Trump's case no one other than maybe Scott Adams and a few others figured out that Trump deliberately wants attention.
