Early Fantastic Four was... weird. Ben was a much bigger asshole in some stories, and you get the impression that Stan and Jack were trying to push The Comics Code as far as they could. As for Doom... well, he was a breath of fresh air, even for Marvel villains. He had a genuinely sympathetic backstory (Right up until 1986, Luthor's origin story was "Superboy accidentally made him bald") and a sense of grandeur that was only matched by Namor, and that guy was the benchmark for "flip-flopping anti-hero".

To clarify, Namor is the flip-flopping antihero (to eb fair, he's been like that since 1940). Doom is the cultured villain who believes himself superior to his foes, and sometimes has a code of honour if the writer feels like it.
